• Suspend your own judgment!
• Listen to understand from the other
person’s perspective.
• Don’t worry about fixing-just listen to
understand.
Reflective Listening
• Layers of reflective listening.
– Repeating: The simplest reflection-repeats
an element of what was said.
– Rephrasing: Stays close, but substitutes
synonyms or slightly rephrases what was
offered.
– Paraphrasing: More of a major statement
in which the listener infers the meaning of
what was said.
– Reflections of feelings: Regarded as
perhaps the deepest form of reflectionemphasizes
the emotional dimensions.
Eliciting Self-Motivating
Statements

– Ask questions in specific areas of probable
conflict or problems.
