• Change is domain specific. The individual
may be at a different stage for different
issues.
• The model was developed around
voluntary change process.
• Each stage is time period during which
essential tasks must be completed.
• The process is cyclical, not linear!
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing
• A technique used to help people recognize
and do something about their present, or
potential problems.
• Particularly useful with people who are
reluctant or ambivalent about changing.
• It’s intended to help resolve ambivalence
and to motivate the person to pursue
rather than avoid change.
