• Atypical Anti-Psychotics: advantages
over traditional anti-psychotic meds.
– ↓ of positive & negative symptoms
–Incidence of EPS/tardive dyskinesia:
lower
•MISA consumers are more at risk for
EPS/tardive dyskinesia
•With atypicals, less need for anti-cholinergic
meds; used to control side-effects
•Improvement in compliance

–Do not block “reward system” compared
to traditional neuroleptics
–Atypicals may reduce drug seeking
behavior (through 5-HT2a
receptor?)

• MAOIs:
– effective in vegetative/major depression
– dietary restrictions
•TCAs
– block re-uptake of 5-HT and NE
–reduce craving? (Norpramin, Tofranil)
– many are sedating (histamine effect)
– cholinergic side-effects
– cannot mix with CNS depressants nor
psychostimulants; OD potential
