Incidence and Prevalence
• 44% to 66% of persons with ABI as
compared to 24% of US population
classified as heavy drinker (Corrigan ‘95)
• Nearly 58% of people with ABI had a prior
history of alcohol abuse or dependence (Kreutzer
‘90)
• 33% of ABI outpatients used illicit drugs
prior to their ABI (Kreutzer ‘91)

• As many as 50% of individuals will return to
using drugs and alcohol post injury (Sparadeo et
al. ‘90)
• About 40% of all patients in post acute rehab
facilities have moderate to severe problems with
substance abuse. Alcohol is the substance
abused in almost 90% of the cases (National Head
Injury Task Force on Substance Abuse ‘88)

• Literature suggests that having prior history of substance
abuse is more common than being intoxicated at the
time of the injury

• At least 30% are intoxicated at the time of their
injury
• Possibly due to diminished motor control,
