COSIG Co-Occurring Disorders Conference, Hershey PA, May 15-17, 2006
Incidence and Prevalence
• 44% to 66% of persons with ABI as
compared to 24% of US population
classified as heavy drinker (Corrigan ‘95)
• Nearly 58% of people with ABI had a prior
history of alcohol abuse or dependence (Kreutzer
‘90)
• 33% of ABI outpatients used illicit drugs
prior to their ABI (Kreutzer ‘91)
Incidence and Prevalence
• As many as 50% of individuals will return to
using drugs and alcohol post injury (Sparadeo et
al. ‘90)
• About 40% of all patients in post acute rehab
facilities have moderate to severe problems with
substance abuse. Alcohol is the substance
abused in almost 90% of the cases (National Head
Injury Task Force on Substance Abuse ‘88)
Incidence of Substance Abuse
History Before ABI (Ohio Valley Center)
• Literature suggests that having prior history of substance
abuse is more common than being intoxicated at the
time of the injury
Incidence of ABI Victims Who Are
Intoxicated at the Time of Injury:
(Ohio Valley Center)
• At least 20% of adolescents and adults who are
hospitalized
• At least 30% are intoxicated at the time of their
injury
• Possibly due to diminished motor control,
blurred vision, poor decision making or greater
vulnerability of being victimized when intoxicated
Incidence of ABI Among Persons
Receiving Substance Abuse Treatment
(Ohio Valley Center)
• A collection of studies over the past 20 years suggest it
may be as high as 50%
