From the Pastor’s Pen
Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph,
Thank you for your tremendous support for our recent pilgrimage to Washington D.C. The picture above
communicates more meaning than words can convey. It’s hard to even begin to find words to express what our
56 pilgrims experienced.
This wonderful trip was prayerful and fun. Most of all, it was an experience of a Christ-centered community
coming together in the desire to follow Jesus and to witness to our belief in the gift and dignity of life. As our little
group joined the thousands of others gathered for the March we felt the power of a unified voice, speaking truth
and witnessing to LIFE.
Our whole parish benefits in the blessings of the pilgrimage. It was made possible by the prayer and support of
so many. We took you with us in our hearts and we could feel your prayer with us in our journey. With deep
gratitude to God and to each of you, I pray that the gift of Life that we hold so dearly, may come to be reverenced
by our nation and our world.
Hope you enjoy the photos following my column. We were truly blessed this year!
“Always remember that as long as we keep the Eucharist the center of our lives, everything else will fall
in place...of that I am confident”!!!
Blessings of peace… Fr. Rickey

Our Father’s Table
A monthly meal for
the Poor of Our Community
Today after the 10:30 mass we will be having our first
planning meeting for “Our Father’s Table”. One of the
three goals of our parish’s Pastoral Council was to
extend an outreach to the larger Farmington community
by serving a warm meal once a month for the poor, the
homeless and needy of our area. If you are interested
in joining the grassroots of the special ministry please
join us for a meeting in our Parish Center following the
10:30 mass today.
Parish Pastoral Council
Our Liturgy Review Begins…
Another one of our Pastoral Council’s goals for this year
was to have a professional review of our liturgies done
to see what our greatest strengths and/or our
weaknesses may be as we gather to celebrate our
Eucharistic celebrations each week. It has been said
often by liturgists, that a parish is only as dynamic as
their liturgies are.
We have chosen Penny Arslanian who is currently the
Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Gerard Majella
Parish in Kirkwood, MO to help us in our efforts. She
currently coordinates and implements the training and
continuing education of lectors, extraordinary ministers
of the Eucharist, environment, ushers and hospitality,
as well as directing several choirs, training cantors, and
overseeing instrumental musicians.
Prior to that appointment in 2007, she was the music
minister/director at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in
Waterbury Vermont and its mission parishes as well as
their liturgical coordinator; a position she held for seven
years. While there, she received a $10,000.00 grant for
the improvement of liturgical celebrations for the parish.
In 2004, as Executive Director of the Monteverdi Music
School, she spearheaded a partnership with the local
Catholic church to train cantors and organists to ensure
that church musicians were up to date in skills and
training. A successful children’s choir for the parish was
also organized under the auspices of the Music School.
Ms. Arslanian earned a Bachelor’s degree in music
from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and a
Master’s degree from St. Michael’s College in Vermont.
She is a published author and composer, and is a
member of the National Pastoral Musician’s
Association. We are very fortunate to have such a
professional to come to Farmington to help us to
enhance our liturgical celebrations. She is hoping to
meet with our choirs, our musicians, our lectors, our
Eucharistic Ministers, our ushers and our altar servers
at least once in the coming months. An evening of
Reflection is also being planned for the entire parish.
On Wednesday, February 3rd We
Will have the Blessing of Throats
On the Feast Day of St. Blaise
After the 7:00 mass this Wednesday morning we
will have the traditional blessing of the throats for the
final blessing of the mass.
Through the intersession of St. Blaise,
bishop and martyr,
May God deliver you from every disease
of the throat and every other illness;
In the name of the Father, and the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
Fish Fry Season Around the Corner
Youth Mass in Perryville
On Sunday, February 14th
Each month the Vincentian Marian Youth ministry has
a Youth Mass in Perryville at the National Shrine of our
Lady of the Miraculous Medal. On Sunday, February
14th, I will be the celebrant and warmly invite our
Youth Groups to attend. The music ministry is totally
awesome and will be appreciated by our youth.
Gathering music starts at 5:45 pm and mass is at
6:00 pm. There will be youth from Bloomsdale, Ste.
Genevieve, Ozora, Cape Girardeau and Jackson
among others in attendance.
And Finally…
It is a joy to share with you a letter that I recently
received from Archbishop Carlton concerning the
celebration of Catholic Schools Week and his
philosophy and goals of our Catholic schools. Please
see pages 10-11. What a remarkable leader we have
for our Archdiocese.

“Love is patient,
love is kind. It is
not jealous, it is
not pompous.”
1 Corinthians 13:4
Are you jealous? Do you focus more on the
things that other people have than on the gifts
that God has given to you? Are you pompous?
Do you seek to acquire more possessions to
impress others? At times we are all guilty of
these human weaknesses. Yet as stewards we
are called to love God above all other things –
striving always to be less jealous, less pompous
and more giving.
Together we pray for those who are sick. (Parishioners names are in bold.)
Love Never Fails
Of all the lines in the second reading, Paul’s
famous description of love, I think the one that
says it all is “Love never fails.” (1 Cor 13:8) Out of
context it sounds like the name of a hokey soap
opera. Instead, Paul compares love to other gifts
of the Spirit. He shows that love is the greatest gift
and the reason for all gifts.
First, he speaks of gifts without love. If someone
was a great speaker, but without love, it would be
self-serving. We’ve all heard politicians who make
stirring speeches, not to move us to become better
citizens, but to convince us that they are the best
choice in an election. The same goes for other
gifts, such as prophecy, knowledge, or faith:
Without love, they become spectacles that draw
attention to the one with the gift. They accomplish
nothing more than to boost his or her ego: just
more spiritual bling. Even self-sacrifice, without
love, becomes an attention grabber.
Suicide-bombers are an extreme example of this,
but more a common one the person who says
something like, “I gave up everything to be with
you and what thanks do I get?”
Next, Paul tells us everything that love is not.
(1 Cor 13:4-6) If the first part was gifts without
love, this section could be called feelings without
love. The feelings Paul mentions, such as
jealousy, pride, brooding, and anger usually come
from thinking that everything should go my way.
You can read the list yourself, but if you find
anything that sounds familiar, it’s a part of your
personality that makes it difficult to love.
The last section is about the permanence of love.
We’re not talking about romantic love here.
Human love at best is “till death do us part.” But
God’s love is only partially experienced in this life.
Even the gifts of the Spirit are meant to carry us
forward and lead others to eternal life. When we
are finally united
completely with God, faith
will be unnecessary and
hope will be realized.
What remains is perfect
love.
our Lives”)

A Letter From Our Archbishop
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
From January 31st - February 6th, we will be celebrating the 37th annual Catholic Schools Week. This is a
wonderful opportunity to recognize the substantial contribution that our schools make to the mission of our
Church. It’s also the appropriate time to thank parents, students, educators, parishioners and the community at
large for the substantial amounts of time, effort and money that they invest in Catholic schools each year.
I hope you can all hear me as I proclaim loudly, and from my heart, during this Catholic Schools Week: Thank
you! Thank you for all that you are doing to make our Catholic schools vibrant centers of academic excellence,
faith formation and Christian service!
My vision
During the past nine months, I have been asked many times: What is your vision for Catholic schools? It’s an
important question, and I’m always grateful for the opportunity to talk about Catholic schools and their importance
to the mission of the Church.
Catholic schools continue the teaching ministry of Jesus. They help adults, youth and children in diverse regions
of our archdiocese come to a deeper understanding of God’s plan for human life and for all creation. Catholic
schools are powerful instruments of evangelization - helping members of the Catholic community and others from
many diverse faiths, cultures and economic backgrounds grow intellectually, personally and spiritually as
members of the one family of God. Catholic schools are also vital to the social ministry of the Church - through
the assistance they provide to students and families in need but also in their commitment to teaching social
justice and providing students with opportunities to serve others.
Catholic schools contribute directly to the health and vitality of the Church of St. Louis. Along with parish religious
education programs, youth ministry and other means of lifelong faith formation and education, our Catholic
schools provide religious education classes, sacramental preparation, liturgical and prayer experiences, and
opportunities for Christian witness and service. They help form the faith community, and they challenge us to look
beyond our own needs to the urgent needs of individuals, families and society at large.
Simply stated, my vision for Catholic schools can be summarized using one of Pope Benedict XVI’s favorite
phrases: Alive in Christ!
I want all our Catholic schools to be Alive in Christ! I want them to demonstrate a vibrant, hope-filled spirit that
proclaims to the whole world that Christ is alive and active— in our homes, in our parishes and school
communities and in our world. I want every Catholic school in our archdiocese to be a vibrant community of faith
that is carrying out the teaching ministry of Jesus in ways that are visible, transformative and service-oriented.
My priorities
I am convinced that in order for Catholic schools to be truly Alive in Christ - vibrant centers of faith and service -
three things must be present:
1. The school must have a vibrant Catholic identity. It must be clearly and unquestionably a Catholic school
and everything about the school’s academic and formation programs must be grounded in the teaching and
practice of the Catholic Church. Every person in a Catholic school—regardless of his or her faith tradition or
social, economic or ethnic background—should be growing in their understanding and appreciation for what the
Catholic Church teaches. We should never impose our Catholic faith on anyone, but we should be eager to share
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time www.stjosephfarmington.com January 31st, 2010 • Page 11
what we believe with others - inviting them to learn, to pray and to serve with us. And everyone in a Catholic school
in this archdiocese should be proud of the contributions that the Catholic Church has made to our diverse cultures
and to the rich traditions and history of our communities and our state.
2. The school must be growing. Proactive recruitment and enrollment management strategies are an essential
sign of life for Catholic schools. All Catholic schools in our archdiocese should either have a commitment to
increase their enrollments or, if a school is filled to capacity, to refer families to nearby Catholic schools and assist
them in enrolling there. We cannot be content with the status quo or, worse, with declining enrollments in our
schools. To truly be Alive in Christ our schools must be vibrant centers of evangelization and missionary activity.
Promoting growth is not an option—no matter how difficult the challenges. Excellence in our educational
programs, our liturgy and spirituality and in our service programs all contribute to a vibrant, growing school
community, but we can’t stop there. Every school should have a student recruitment plan and every member of
the school community should have a part to play in growing the school’s enrollment.
3. The school must be financially healthy and, at the same time, provide assistance to those who
otherwise could not afford to attend a Catholic school. This is perhaps our greatest challenge. The cost of a
Catholic school education threatens the continued existence of too many schools in our archdiocese. That’s
precisely why this must be a top priority for all of us. The Catholic school system in our archdiocese, and
throughout the United States, was built by the stewardship of religious women and men and the sacrifices of
Catholic families who were largely immigrants or rural poor who gave everything they had to provide Catholic
schools for their children. Vibrant Catholic schools demonstrate something of that same spirit of stewardship and
sacrifice. They work hard to achieve financial health and vitality, and they do whatever they can to help families
who otherwise could not afford a Catholic school education for their children.
This is my vision for Catholic schools, and these are my priorities. I am not naïve. I know that many cultural
influences are at work against maintaining a strong Catholic identity in our schools. I know that we face
demographic and other challenges to the growth of school enrollments. And not a day goes by that I don’t hear
from a pastor or school administrator who is facing serious financial problems—or from parents who are struggling
to afford a Catholic school education for their children.
I believe the challenge is clear. We must keep our schools Catholic. We must grow them. And they must be
financially sound and able to assist those in need. Our Lord didn’t say it would be easy to be His disciples, or to
proclaim His Good News, but He did promise to remain with us and to send us His Holy Spirit to guide us. Our job
is to discern God’s will through prayer and meditation on His Word, and then to act boldly with confidence in His
grace.
During the next several months, I will be inviting pastors, school administrators, parents, teachers, students, lay
leaders in our parishes, and community and business leaders in diverse regions of our archdiocese to advise me
on these three questions:
1. How can we strengthen our schools in their Catholic identity?
2. How can we increase the number of students in our Catholic schools?
3. How can we make our schools financially sound and, at the same time, help those who otherwise could not
afford a Catholic school education?
I hope you will share your thoughts with me. These are vitally important questions, and I need your help in making
my vision (what I hope will become our vision) for Catholic schools a reality.
As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week 2010, let’s be very grateful for the gift of Catholic schools and for the
people who make them possible in our archdiocese. May they always be Alive in Christ!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Archbishop of St. Louis
