Protected nature areas are geographically designated areas that are
under special state protection according to a competent state authority
and administration resolution and they are created for the purpose of
protecting and conserving nature`s diversity, providing scientific
research and environment control as well as conserving significant
territories for public recreation and education. Designated as nature
territories to be especially protected are those that have great
importance in diversity conservation as well as significant value for
science, esthetics, culture and recreation.
The protected areas are divided into the following categories: state
nature reserves, national parks, biosphere reserves, nature parks,
nature monuments, nature reserves, and protected landscapes
territories.
Welcome to Latvia!
Latvia is a country charged with positive energy, a country where people
live balanced lives calmly and confidently. It is possible that this
mentality was formed by Latvia`s gentle nature. Natural disasters do
not take place here, there are no dangerous excesses nor excentric
extremes to endanger the traveller. The tourist will most certainly be
satisfied about the time spent in Latvia and will leave richer in
knowledge and impressions. Latvia warmly awaits travallers.
Traveller, Latvia awaits you:
Baltic sea coast with the longest (approx. 400 km) sandy beach in
Europe, one of the most beautiful free access beaches, where one can
relax, participate in traditional coastal fishing, search for amber and
enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The coast in all its length
varies in form – wide beaches, pine covered dunes and sandy steep
slopes. During the 11 000 years of Baltic Sea formation in the north
where the waters of the Gulf of Riga meet the waters of the Baltic Sea
the Kolka Horn was formed from sand drifts. Now the Horn is
claimed to be the “centre” of Europe. Several beaches in Latvia have
received the “Blue Flag”.
The forests of Latvia are its green gold and they cover more than
40% of the territory of Latvia. Noteworthy in Latvia are its wetlands,
bogs and marshes. Its total area is over 10% of the territory of Latvia
and it plays a significant role in ensuring the diversity of nature.
The blue gold are the rivers and lakes of Latvia. In Latvia`s
nature and cultural heritage water has been of great significance. The
largest river in the Baltic States is the Daugava – the river of destiny
for Latvians. In Kuld¥ga there is “Ventas rumba” (249 m) – Europe`s
widest waterfall. The prehistoric valley of the Abava river (tributary to
Venta) because of its picturesqueness is called the Switzerland of
Kurzeme. The beautiful Salaca is one of the most popular water
tourism rivers as well as a significant salmon river. The Gauja valley
is the site in Latvia most visited by tourists. Here there is a large
number of noteworthy geological sites that reflect the development of
nature and the terrain. There is a whole region of Latvia which is
described as the land of the blue lakes. That is Latgale where lakes
and groups of lakes make up the basic elements of the landscape.
A bird migration route of European significance moves
mostly along the coastal plane. Approximately 10 million rare birds
pass through the kilometre wide strip between Lake Pape and the
Baltic Sea in August – November. Pape is also of world significance
for bat migrations. Latvia is also known as the land of storks.
Latvians are said to believe that storks deliver children…
Latvia`s most recent achievement to be proud of is the successful
reintroduction of animal species. The renewed wood frog population
is increasing convincingly in all of Southern Kurzeme. The
settling and keeping the descendants of the early European horses –
the tarpans, in a natural, free environment has been a great success.
In Kalvene zoological garden in large enclosures live the largest kiang
population in Europe. For quite a while now in L¥gatne live a herd of
aurochs and there are plans of increasing the population of these large
forest animals.
And that is by no means all! Many new and wonderful things will be
discovered by each traveller who will look deeper into nature`s nooks
around Latvia. Who knows, may be you also will discover something
new within yourself!
LAKE PAPE AND ITS SURROUND L
The central part of the nature park is taken up by Lake Pape,
one of the relic lagoons – shallow lakes characteristic of the
Baltic Sea coastline in Latvia. The lake is gradually overgrowing
with reeds and most of it has become a reed marsh. Only
800 m away is the sea coast with a sandy beach and dunes. In
this narrow strip of land the sea and the lake have formed a
particular natural environment. The lake has a characteristic
saltwater vegetation and is notable for several rare plant
species. Included in the Lake Pape nature reserve is also the
Nida marsh (also a relic lagoon), Japplermalciems’ – Pape’s high
dune massif, the pebbly beach of Nida, the nature reserve of
Kalni‰˙i with rare plant species, and the fishing villages of
Nida, Papes µo¿i and Priediengale where an old building site
and plans have been reserved.
LAKE PAPE FROM BIRD’S-EYE VIEW
The shallow Lake Pape and its shores are very suitable for
water-fowl nesting, therefore, this place has been chosen by
several dozens of bird species rare in Europe and rare in the
whole world. The area of the lake is 3878 ha and its
conditions coincide with the Ramsare Convention about
water-fowl nesting and migration. Particularly significant is
the narrow strip of land between the sea and the lake where
migratory birds and bats (unique in the world) stop-over
during the autumn migration. 271 birds species have been
stated in the environment of the Lake Pape. Since 1966 here
is an ornithology station. Every autumn here are banded up
to 54 000 birds, but during the intensive migration days up
to 1 million birds pass over this area. Here nest such rare birds
as corn-crake, sedge warbler, big and small bittern, etc., but in
the Nida marsh nests meadow hen-harrier, yellow plover,
corn-crake, sedge warbler.
BIRD WATCHING TOWER AT THE SOUTHERN END OF THE LAKE
Photo: WWF
Photo: WWF
In the summer of 1999 in the meadows on the eastern shores of
Lake Pape, to protect the lake shore from overgrowing with reeds,
in a fenced area of about 130 ha wild horses – Konik Polski – were
brought in. These horses are the close descendants of the wild
horses – Tarpans. These horses have adjusted well to living on the
shores of Lake Pape and have already produced the first offspring.
The project about the introduction of wild horses was supported
by WWF and the goal was to create a territory where processes of
nature would take place without the interference of man, but
local economy would thrive without the degradation of natural
resources.
Ecotourism is one way how such enterprises can develop successfully
in future giving economic benefits for the local population.
Migrating and nesting birds, wild horses, peculiar nature conditions,
fishing villages with their old buildings still inhabited by
the few coastal fishermen have significant value for tourists.
SL±TERE NATIONAL PARK
L
Photo: E.Pïterhofs
The National Park takes up a unique territory in northern
Kurzeme which in Latvia is known as “vigu” (a moist hollow
between dunes) and “kangaru”(long dunes) land. The particular
conditions and processes forming the territory, still occurring
today, have created a multiform ecosystem aggregate:
here can be found all forms of elongated bogs, small narrow
lakes, ancient dunes several kilometres long with all types of
forests. In the Park territory temperate zone mixed forests and
taiga and tundra natural elements can be found side by side.
This mixing of natural conditions has created a benevolent
environment for a fauna and flora of many forms.
From “Zilie Kalni” (Blue Mountains) in the south to Kolka
Horn in the north the Sl¥tere National Park holds information
about the history of the formation of the Baltic Sea – beginning
before the last ice age eleven thousand years ago. Experts
call it the Baltic Sea geological formation open air museum,
where various relics from those early times can be found –
Ancilus and Baltic ice lake shore sections.
“Zilie Kalni” in a wide arch mark off Dundaga elevation from
the earlier mentioned “vigu”and “kangaru” area. This border
line is unique in Latvia from the point of view of landscape
as well as from the geological and ecosystem aspects. The
slope of “Zilie Kalni” with its many ravines reaches to a height
of 50 m above the plain which reaches to the sea.
“ZILIE KALNI” FORESTS
The fact that Kri‰jÇnis ValdemÇrs determined Kolka Horn as
the central point of Europe is only one reason why it is worth
while to visit this interesting territory formed by nature and people.
To ornithologists Kolka Horn is well known as and outstanding
place for watching bird migration. In the spring, before heading
across the sea, up to 150 000 birds gather here at the same
time. In the middle of April one can see together buzzards, eagles,
geese, ducks, many of the sparrow-like birds and others.
The Kolka Horn has developed in the place where the waters of
the Baltic Sea meet the waters of Riga Gulf. On the shore the
ruins of the old lighthouse are still visible, but the present lighthouse
was built in 1884 and is at the end of an underwater bank
– 6 km from the shore.
Closely knit on this sea coast are culture, work and nature creating
a rare composition of values characteristic only to this area.
Approximately 50 km along the Irbe Sound sea coast villages
with a unique heritage have been settled. Here lives one of the
smallest European ethnic groups –the Livs, who having lived in
isolation have not been assimilated into Latvian communities.
The Liv fishing families continue their traditional work, but
those interested in old, almost extinct cultures are trying to
protect and reserve for future generations a culture unique to
this ethnic group. The Liv identity is strengthened not only by
traditions and language, but also by fishing village building
sites, individual buildings, historically important places and
other elements of cultural heritage.
µEMERI NATIONAL PARK L
Photo: A.Liepa
Since 1999 µemeri National Park includes several separate
elements and territories for protection – µemeri (Big) Mire,
Lake Ka¿ieris, Slocene river valley, Green Marsh sulphur
springs, ancient inland dunes (Green Dune, KrÇãu Hills), a
sandy seaside with seacoast dunes, Lake Valgums (30 m
gully). Due to the history of the geomorphologic formation
of the surrounding area and the contiguity of large geological
structures, in a relatively small territory a peculiar ecosystem
has developed, characteristic only for this area. This has promoted
a large biological diversity (here is 1/4 of Latvia's
endangered (Red Book) plants). The Park also has a special
value because near the Park is located the City of Japplermala
(developed as a health resort) and approx. 20 km away is Riga,
the capital of Latvia.
The basic territory of the National Park is the relic of the
Baltic ice lake lagoon - coastal region type high marsh, one of
the largest moss marshes in Latvia – µemeri mire. It is also
one of the ornithologically significant marshes. The seacoast
of the National Park was formed after the Litorin sea period,
therefore, here together can be observed present day shoreline
ecosystems as well as a unique marsh, lake and inland
water ecosystems.
µEMERI MIRE
Lake Ka¿ieris is a significant (Ramsare Convention) waterfowl
living and resting place on their migrations. In turn, the
surrounding bogs provide a relatively safe nesting conditions
for nesting birds – sea eagle, eagle-owl, black stork (7-8 pairs),
cranes, small eagle. Here in large numbers also nest in Europe
disappearing corn-crakes.
Just as the birds, so the mammals also find here a certain
security from the surrounding bustle of life – elks, stags, wild
boar, wolfs.
In Lake Ka¿ieris there have been ascertained more than 20
fish species, as well as most of the amphibians and reptiles
encountered in Latvia.
Since 1989 Lake Ka¿ieris has been included in ISBP (Birdlife
International), Europe`s list of significant bird sites.
As a result of the interaction between the bedrock –
dolomite – and the swamps in the whole territory a whole set
of sulphur springs has developed, a unique natural site of
European significance. The sulphur springs were the reason
for the development of the Latvian health spa in the 1930ies
in µemeri.
LapmeÏciems and Ragciems can compete with the Vidzeme
coastline and beaches – Zvejniekciems, Saulkrasti and others.
The wide beach and fine sand coastline dunes with pine
forests and the prepared fish products from the recently
ABAVA VALLEY NATURE PARK L
Photo: J.Sma∫inskis
ABAVA VALLEY, VE˛UP±TE
The nature park encompasses an ancient valley created
by waters of melting glaciers and here some of the most
beautiful landscapes of Latvia can be seen. Not in vain for
many years the Abava Valley has been called the “Switzerland
of Kurzeme”. Abava, 129 km long, is the contributory to the
river Venta. The river banks are formed by terraced slopes cut
and separated by deep gulleys where here and there open up
sandstone breccia, small streams appear and frequently even
waterfalls. In the Abava Valley there have been identified
11 geological sites for preservation.
In Latvia everyone knows the “Abavas rumba” (rapids), one
of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kurzeme, and the “Maras
kambari” – the mystic sandstone niches and grottoes.
In this nature park 30 archaeological sites, 13 architectural and
17 art monuments have been placed under State protection.
Here nature has been little affected by people’s traditional
farming and agriculture. This is a unique phenomenon in
Europe. The Abava Valley flood-lands and river bank slopes
are rich in a variety of grass species – here can be found 30
plant species included in Latvia’s Red Book (plants to be protected).
This area is considered one of the richest in variety of
flora in Latvia. By cultivating meadows, a mosaic of landscapes
and ecosystems are reserved. The river, small lakes,
small farms, forest clumps and meadows form a rural
environment so typical of Latvia, and so different from the
landscapes seen in intensive farming countries.
In the nature park there are also areas of plant growth not
characteristic to Latvia. For example, goldfinger marsh - a
calcium salt marsh - the only place in Latvia where the
goldfinger plant grows wild and uncultivated.
Photo: A.Gustovskis
LANDSCAPE OF THE ABAVA VALLEY
Photo: A.Gustovskis
Characteristic to the prehistoric valley is the mixed
landscape of spruce, broadleaf, pine and birch forests, with
juniper growths, meadows and fields. This is one of the best
cultivated prehistoric valleys in Latvia with the Sabile Wine
Hill – the most northerly open area vineyard in the world.
People have lived in the Abava valley since the stone age and
this area is outstanding for its concentration of cultural
heritage objects.
Now local farm owners are also active. In the Abava Valley
several farms cultivate organically grown produce, develop
country tourism, and the preservation of local history and
traditions. Ecologically pure food is grown and holistic health
is promoted with natural products and nature’s energies.
From their heights the ancient hillforts of Kandava, Buse and
Sabile look down upon today’s activities.
LAKE ENGURE NATURE PARK L
LAKE ENGURE – POPULAR PLACE TO WATCH MIGRATING BIRDS
The Lake Engure Nature Park is one of the most significant
bird nesting places in Latvia. For several decades bird
watching and banding has taken place here. Especially for
this purpose a floating ornithological station and bird
watching tower have been built permitting the constant
observation of lake fauna. It is possible that ecotourists will
wish to visit here more frequently. In such cases the main
request is to co-ordinate arrival and treat the birds and the
work of researchers with respect.
In the nature park there are also such peculiar nature aspects
as coastal meadows. The existence of these meadows is
closely tied to the condition of the bay shore line water
quality, therefore the water surface in the bay has to be
protected to the depth of 10 metres. Travellers can also visit
Mïrsrags museum “Saietu nams” where unique mythological
and ancestral recognition mark collection is kept.
The main ecotourism resources in Engure Nature Park are
linked to the lake. Therefore, it is important to ensure that
ecotourists can access the tourism elements in the lake or on
its shores. There are 5 small boat marinas to serve tourists in
the busy season.
Ecotourists may go for hikes along the shore's nature trail and
observe the characteristics of a lagoon lake ecosystem and
other aspects of nature. After that tourists may go by boat on
the lake to observe bird life, photograph, fish or relax. The
lake has 7 islands. After such a relaxing moments tourists can
continue on horseback. In the company of knowledgeable
guides ecotourists have the opportunity to build a fire and
pitch tents to wake up in the morning and watch the animals
come out on the lakeshore to drink.
The nature elements to be particularly protected are the
coastal meadows and the surface waters of the bay and they
closely enclose Mïrsrags village and the harbour. Here has
developed a unique situation where particular nature survives
next to traditional human activities. Mïrsrags lighthouse
towers above the village and the shore line.
The coastal meadows are a unique sea coast formation
which provides growth environment for rare plant varieties
protected in Europe and home for 60 bird species.
To introduce this unique area fully tourists trails are being
developed which will link together Mïrsrags harbour with
the yacht marina, the museum, the lighthouse, the coastal
meadows, the forests and beaches.
Some of the ecotourists will surely appreciate tasting the sea
food prepared here.
GAUJA NATIONAL PARK
L
Photo: J.Sma∫inskis
GAUJA – THE MOST POPULAR WATER-TOURISM RIVER IN LATVIA
The most popular national park territory in Latvia began to
form approx. 380 million years ago. The latest considerable
transformation occurred before approx. 12 thousand years when
the glaciers receded. Since then the Gauja river has created a
unique valley with many tributary valleys, parallel gullies, banks,
ravines, caves, sand and dolomite cliffs. There are several
hundred of such elements in the Gauja valley and the tributary
banks. 1/5 of the river is located in a wide, 85 m deep valley
which forms the bases of the national park. In this area tourism
developed before there was any thought of the necessity of
nature protection. This area was called the Switzerland of
Vidzeme and already in the 19th century “Alpine trails” and rest
places were planned and developed here. Tourist and holidaymaker
interest gradually grew and only because of the status as a
national park tourism began to be organised so as not to damage
nature. Now more thought is given to research in the area of
nature protection. Here it is possible to travel in a more naturefriendly
and diverse manner than in other places in Latvia. Here
are the L¥gatne Study and Recreation Park with wild animal
enclosures, botanical, nature and fairy-tale trails, the Turaida
Museum Reservation, Årai‰i Museum Park, water tourism routes,
horse riding in the valley and bicycle routes. The more sensitive
nature territories are not disturbed because 4% of the Gauja
National Park territory is a reservation. This is closed to visitors.
The National Park can be considered an open-air cultural
heritage museum because here can be found 221 cultural heritage
elements, but together with historically significant elements
the number exceeds 500. Here is the largest condensation
of hillforts in a given small area in Latvia. Especially valuable
is the Turaida medieval castle and a particularly noteworthy
is the Årai‰i Lake Fortress-Settlement.
On the Årai‰i lake island after 10 years of archaeological
research 9th and 10th centuries’ Letgallian fortress has been
reconstructed and this gives an idea about the ancient lake settlements
in Latvia 1000 years ago. The Lake Fortress-Settlement
together with other cultural and historical heritage elements in
the surrounding area form the Årai‰i Museum Park.
The L¥gatne Study and Recreation Park was developed in
1975 and gained its popularity with the wild animal
enclosures. Here stay not only the wild animals native to
Latvia, such as stags, wild boars, bobcats, otters, but also a
bear family and a herd of aurochs. Here and in the
surrounding area can be found 48 animal species as well as a
large number of various bird species.
Students learn from the botanical trail. Because of the
surrounding terrain, natural conditions, and vast forest areas,
a extensive biological diversity can be observed. Interesting
are also the extremely large, old trees and peculiar tree
growths. An observation tower has been built in L¥gatne for
observation and appreciation of the expansive forests.
DAUGAVA ARCS NATURE PARK L
Photo: D.Gruberta
“DAUGAVAS LOKI” – RIVER VALLEY LANDSCAPE FROM
VERVERI BANK
The Daugava valley in the 25 km between Jezupova and
KrÇslava is unique and significant. In a 7 km wide area the river
makes nine scenically impressive arcs – Elerne, Buti‰˙i, Rozali‰˙i,
Ververi, Daugavsargi, Rud¿a, Zvainieki, Sker‰kÇni and Priedaine.
The Daugava river valley arcs are considered the most ancient
valley formations in Latvia. This valley is a unique research place
and can be proud of interesting geological elements – exposed
bedrock, valleys, river banks, large rocks (Adamova bank, Ververi
bank, “RobeÏakmens”, 350 millions year old Upper Devonian
sandstone exposures). The river valley bank formations open up
scenic landscape views. One such place is the Ververi bank.
The Daugava river flow in the east-west direction has created
favourable conditions for diverse plant growth and existence.
Forests take up 47% of the total territory. Wet lands and meadows
dominate the northern shore, but on the south side of the river
dry meadows are predominant. In the Nature Park there is a
considerable fern-type plant and seed plant prevalence (total of
755 species). Nature trails have been established in several places
– a total of four, which are the main infrastructure for ecotourism.
Ecotourism has been developed better on the right bank.
One of the more interesting man created elements on the
Daugava river bank is a model of the medieval Dinaburga castle.
Although it is 40 times smaller than the original, it does leave a
noteworthy impression.
The Adamova trail has been developed not far from KrÇslava
on the right river bank slope of the Daugava valley. Its beginning
is in the outlook area, noticeable as you enter KrÇslava
approaching from Daugavpils. The trail was developed by the
faculty and students of Daugavpils university and it is kept up
by KrÇslava district information centre. The trail enables one
to see several geological elements, places of historic significance,
and enjoy beautiful scenery. Here rises the Adamova
hillfort, but below many small streams flow into Daugava
forming many diverse ravines. The slope is hugged by the
many roots of the impressive oaks. The length of the trail is
only 1.4 km, but it has a dense array of interesting
elements (springs, valleys, steep slopes, large rocks, rare and
protected plants) and lovely views.
Vasargeli‰˙i, set in the Daugava arcs, attracts special
attention with its ravines and beautiful scenery. Therefore a
wide view opens up from the steep overlooking the Daugava
arcs, ravines and the surrounding landscape. These are a
unique type of ravine. They remind one of troughs directed
towards Daugava, but not reaching the river they end above
the flood plain terrace. Not far from here is Sandari‰˙u bank
one of the highest in the Vasargeli‰˙u arc. From the 30 m high
bank opens up a beautiful view. 400 m from the river on the
flood terrace is one of the largest rocks of this area.
TEIâI NATURE RESERVE
L
Photo: U.Bergmanis
In the Teiãi Reserve the flora is characteristic of eastern
Latvia`s marshes, bogs and forests. In the reserve there have
been recognised 674 flowering plants and fern type plants
from which 38 are under protection, as well as 212 moss
species from which 22 are under protection. Teiãi Bog is the
only place in Latvia where soft bog-moss has been found.
Among the plants under special protection in the Teiãi Reserve
is also lady`s slipper, drooping wood-reed, etc.
In the reserve 46 species of mammals characteristic to fauna in
Latvia have been identified. Among them also the species
endangered in Europe: beaver, lynx, otter, wolf, brown bear.
Teiãi reserve is also an important home for invertebrates (there
have been 2878 species idenetified), paricularly the marsh
butterfly species from which 26 are relics from the ice age.
TEIâI BOG
The large tract of Teiãi Bog is located in the plain of Jersika
in the lowlands of eastern Latvia. It is the largest moss bog in
the Baltic States which has been given the status of state
protected nature territory – 10 000 to 12 000 years ago after the
complete disappearance of the glacier there appeared in the
reserve territory a wavy terrain with long bank-like rises
formed by the waters of the melting glaciers, thus creating
longish islands and peninsulas. In the excessive moisture
conditions in the lower parts of the terrain shallow lakes were
formed which gradually merged together and became
overgrown. So, during several thousands of years in the Teiãi
Bog collected a peat layer to the thickness of 9 meters. Most of
Teiãi Bog is taken up by a moss marsh, yet there are areas with
transition and grass marshes. The main micro-landscape
formations in Teiãi Bog are two micro-terrains typical of a high
bog – the various hillock terrains and quagmire and bog pool
formations. Teiãi Bog is a dome-shaped bog where domes can
rise over the surrounding bog territory up to 7 metres. There
are 18 larger lakes in the bog and they are located mostly below
the dome slopes.
GOLDEN EAGLE ON THE TEIâI RESERVE
The Teiãi Bog is an internationally significant environment
for migrating and nesting water fowl. From the birds endangered
in Europe here are 52 bird species including black stork,
lesser spotted eagle, golden eagle, whibrel, golden plover,
wood sand piper, common crane. There is also the rare blackthroated
diver which is depicted in the Reserve emblem. The
Teiãi Bog is important for black grouse in rutting-time, as well
as rest and feeding place for cranes (200-1200 individuals)
and geese (white-fronted goose and bean goose) during
spring and autumn migration times.
Among the largest Teiãi Bog islands - RÇksala, Ap‰usala, and
Siksala, of a particular significance is Siksala where a
settlement of Russian old-belivers has remained. Some of the
homes are still inhabited by the descendants of old-believers.
On this island is the tourist attracting 28 m high observation
tower with a wide view over the marshes. For tourists who are
interested in such unspoilt nature specially planned bog
walkways have been established.
NORTH VIDZEME BIOSPHERE RESERVE L
Photo: A.Soms
In the Biosphere Reserve are included the river basins of
Salaca river, Lake Burtnieks and several small rivers flowing
into the Gulf of Riga, and the 60 km long Gulf of Riga coast
line of Vidzeme to the depth of 10 m. Nature diversity is
provided particularly by one of the largest virgin high bog
lands located across the border of Latvia and Estonia creating
a perspective nature reserve. 1/16 of all natural salmon of the
Baltic Sea spawn in the Salaca river. The Burtnieks drumlin
area is one of the largest of this kind of glacier created
formations in Europe. Sandy beaches, as well as sandstone
cliffs unique for the Baltic Sea coast can be seen on the 60 km
long Gulf of Riga coastline. The coastal or Randu meadows
are the largest such meadows in Latvia and here 650 species
of plants can be found in one area.
BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY IS PROVIDED BY THE BOGS
The territory is a significant bird resting place during
migration. Here in large quantities nest the common cranes
and several varieties of geese; one can also observe the
dashing flights of the kingfishers over the river depths. Many
secrets are kept and reserved by the underwater sea coast. The
Helsinki Commission has established the sea coast area to the
depth of 10 m from the Latvian-Estonian border to the
settlement of “Dze¿i” as an area to be particularly protected.
Many of the noteworthy aspects of the biosphere reserve can
be seen and observed from a boat. The biological diversity as
well as the boating accessibility (even for beginners) have
made the region’s main river the Salaca one of the most
popular boating territories in Latvia. Those who are
particularly interested in holiday-making and relaxing by
boating on the Salaca river must look for the best boating
guide in Latvia “No Burtniekiem l¥dz japplerai” (From Burtnieki to
Sea) written just for this particular river.
SALACA RIVER IN SPRING
The biological diversity of the area is characterised by
virgin moss bogs and the migrating hundreds of cranes and
thousands of geese. In the summer one can often hear the
peculiar call of the corn-crake. Close to the Estonian
border the appearance of the brown bear and the call of the
wolf on moonlit winter nights has become quite common.
In the rivers home have found large beaver and otter
populations. Proof of the reserve’s biological diversity are the
rare sand toad’s existence here and the white stork colonies
south of Vecate where more than thirty stork pairs have made
their nests.
TîRVETE NATURE PARK L
THE TîRVETE HILLFORT
On the flat plains of Zemgale Tïrvete particularly stands out
because of the higher terrain and picturesque landscape. The
special conditions of the district in ancient times (12th – 13th
cent.) promoted the development of a significant Zemgallian
administrative and commercial centre. This is confirmed by the
“witnesses” of ancient times of Tïrvete - the Zemgallian hillforts
and German crusader castle ruins. In Tïrvete there are several
steep hills on which were located the ancient Zemgallian
wooden castles, ritual worship places and fortifications.
In comparatively recent times the Tïrvete river picturesque valley
has been regarded as a good place for tourism and recreation.
An important sanatorium was built there (now a rehabilitation
centre) and a forest landscaped park with theme paths was
created. Not only do the paths link the surrounding interesting
natural and historic objects, but also introduce the local people's
important contributions. The name Tïrvete particularly is tied to
the name of the most popular Latvian author Anna Brigadere.
In the well-planned part of the nature park a landscape park
has been developed which with its A. Brigadere`s fairy tale
heroes carved in wood and lovely leisure places attracts
public. On the pathways activity places for children also have
been created. From a 40 m high tower opens up a panoramic
view. At the base of the tower a new log building has been
built – Tïrvete History Museum. Especially picturesque part
of the park appears while walking the paths along the Tïrvete
river leading to the many wooden bridges. On the valley
terraces and slopes there are varied natural meadows and here
rare plants typical only of this region can be found.
In the park territory there is a water reservoir with swans and
a swan watching foot-bridge for watching the birds. In
the water reservoir it is possible to fish for pike, tench
and carp and there are boats for boating and photography
opportunities for nature photography.
The park successfully works as a centre for nature and culture
information. There is also a special bird pathway and nature
study excursions are offered with a guide.
TRAIL IN THE NATURE PARK
The Tïrvete river valley – ravines, hillocks and the surrounding
pine forests – is attractive to every visitor. Most of
the territory is taken up by forests which include a grand pine
forest – a special, genetically significant growth, a rare forest
type in Latvia and where some pines are 300 years old (one of
the oldest in the Baltic States) and 40 m high (highest in
Latvia). The grand pine forest is the pride of the park. Any
park visitor immediately can feel the energy of the grand
forest and its sustaining scent.
Near the sanatorium there is significant dendrological planting
and this makes the place more diverse and attractive.
ROUTE THROUGH ABAVA VALLEY (canoeing and boat trip)
The nature park and the geographic region includes the Abava
valley, the second largest river valley in Latvia. Its middle section,
with Kandava, Sabile and Renda, is one of the most popular tourist
regions, particularly with water tourists.
The Abava river is very curvy until Renda. Due to the dense
vegetation during the summer period there are limited overnight
accommodation facilities at the river, they are mostly provided at
special campsites and guest houses at the river banks. Current of the
Abava river is pretty slow. There are some rapids, fords and feeders on
the route to the Venta river, but they do not cause any serious
problems at all. One of the most exciting spot on the route is the
Abava rapids - a waterfall where the Abava river is crossed by about
1 m high dolomite ledge. It is recommended to take the mainstream
current which is on left hand, otherwise the boats might be damaged!
Another option is to take the boats off the river at this spot, to carry
them over the rapids along the right hand river shore and to put boats
back in the water after the rapids. 200 m after waterfall the current is
still quick and wavy.
Popular routes for one day trip are: Velnakmens – Abavas rumba (Abava
Rapids); Abavas rumba (Abava Rapids) - Renda; Renda - the Abava entry.
Renda – the Nabas lake is a picturesque two days trip for those who
prefer to stay overnight at the river. 4 km after Renda the Abava flows
through a forest of fir trees, 33km after Renda, the Abava river enters
into the Venta river. The best way to explore sceneries and historical
sites of the Abava valley is to take a boat trip down the river. The towns
of Kandava and Sabile developed around the castles of the Livonian
Order in the 1300s. The Pedvale open-air museum is near Sabile, where
modern art installations are organically incorporated into the beauty of
the surrounding natural scenery. The scenic surroundings of Sabile and
Renda with the banks of the Abava measuring a height of 20 -30 m
have earned the name of most beautiful spots in Kurzeme.
In this area along the route one can learn the local cultural and economical
environment beginning with Curonian hillforts, Dukedom of Courland’s
(16th – 18th century) industrial manufacturing and architecture and
ending with modern biological and biodynamical farms and activities
toward environmentally friendly life style and sustainable society.
cultivated in Sabile in the middle ages, have been
renewed today. The vineyard dates back to
the 16th - 17th centuries when the Sabile wines were
• produced both for needs of the court of the Duchy of
Kurzeme and export to far-off countries. The place where
they grow, has been mentioned in the Guiness Book of
Records as the most northern vineyard in the world.
ROUTE THROUGH SîLIJA
In the last few years the local governments’ tourism organisations
in Sïlija have developed considerably. Not only for
foreigners, but even for much of Latvia`s population Sïlija,
the fifth ethnographical region, is a great discovery.
To attract tourists hiking trails have been developed on the
banks of the Daugava river and along the Lithuanian border.
The old manor houses, the parks and the protected nature
territories create attractive tourism sites.
The total route for bicycling is 270 km, which includes hiking
trails (the longest is 15.5 km). The route leads from
Daugavpils to Aizkraukle visiting some of the most beautiful
places in Sïlija region on the way. Although the terrain can
not be considered to be in the high difficulty category, a large
part of the route will be through hills and valleys. This territory
stands out with attractive landscapes and mosaic-like
rural environment. The serious traveller in Latvia does not
have to be told what the Aug‰zeme heights or Sïlija bank of
hillocks express. Not to mention the land along the
Lithuanian border which is frequently praised just like
Vecpiebalga or the Baltic Sea coast.
The duration of the trip could be 3 – 5 days depending on the
preparedness level of the tourist. The size of the group is limited
by the safety aspects of moving along general roads used
by cars. The suggested size of the group would be 8 – 10 people,
but in cases where the group is considerably larger on sections
of road where the road traffic is heavier the group
should be divided up in smaller sections. It is necessary for
the group leader to have orientation skills.
Visiting specific points of interest should be done on foot and
not always can the bicycles be left in a supervised place.
Therefore, the bicycles should be locked together when left
behind.
b points of interest
• Lake Svente – botanical reserve, the largest lake in Sïlija
(738.8 ha) with clear water and a clear shore line.
Noteworthy landscape and significant to several bird
species.
• ·ïdere woodwork and carvings – A. Sietkovskis, creates
unique wooden spoons. In the private museum there are
various creations by the craftsman – various landscapes and
people carved from wood, dishes from tree outgrowths,
turned objects and spoons from 54 kinds of wood.
• Akme¿up¥te nature trail – On the edge of the Bebrene
village along the Dviete tributary`s banks for 1.5 km.
• Vilkupe – Eglaine canal – The attempt of Duke Jacob
in 1666 to join the waters of the two main rivers with the
intention to of diverting part of the manufactured goods
flow from R¥ga to his capital city.
• Akn¥ste cold spring trail – 1.5 km long leads along
the Suseja prehistoric valley and across an archaeological
monument from unknown times which is called the
hillfort, or even Napoleon`s fortifications.
• “Pilskalnes Siguldi¿a” – landscape trail devloped in
the valley eroded by the melting glacial waters. Three
different trails have been developed – “Spr¥d¥tis” for
children, 1.6 km long; dendrology – 3.8 km long;
geology/landscape information trail in combination
with historic elements – 8 km long.
• Vecmelderi springs – on the right bank of Suseja, one
of the largest springs in Latvia.
• Evalds Papplepols vineyard – at present the largest
vineyard in Latvia. In the last 30 years more than 100
varieties have been tried out for cultivating. The plants
grow on terraces and these have been constructed by
people only.
• Kubu∫up¥te water goblers – most impressive
underground river formation in Lavia. It is located in
the Liepjǿi birch grove at the edge of the Sece highway.
Because of the cracked dolomite rocks all the river water
runs into the undergound.
ROUTE THROUGH KRUSTKALNI AND TEIâI NATURE RESERVES
The largest moss marsh in the Baltic States is one of the least
affected nature territories in Latvia. Yet, in the side by side
existing reserves –Teiãi and Krustkalni – the necessary conditions
have been created to enable travellers to appreciate the
unspoilt nature. Special places, particularly the nature territories
to be protected, can be viewed and appreciated only when
accompanied by reserve guides, making a timely appointment
by telephone.
The route is planned for three days, each day the walk will last
up to 8 hours. The sections of the route may be interchanged,
depending on the arrival point of the tourists, or the number
of tourists at a given moment in the nature reserve. Three
excursions are possible: Krustkalni reserve (2 hours with a
guide) and the pottery workshop; Teiãi Bog trail and observation
tower on Siksala (3.5 hours with guide); Barkava oak
grove and bird watching.
Size of the group, recommended not larger than 15 people,
preferably 7-10, is mainly determined by the nature territory`s
protection regulations and the overnight accommodation
possibilities.
People interested in bird watching must provide their own
optical equipment and must have waterproof footwear.
On the Teiãi Nature Reserve one of the ecotourism interests is
bird watching. Bird watching is possible almost any place,
especially during feeding and migration time when one after
another in the sky bird formations fly by either leaving or
coming down to feed in the lush meadows.
The eastern border of Teiãi Nature Reserve can be walked by
zigzagging along various gravel roads. Getting lost in the
marsh will be prevented by the reserve border signs. It must be
remembered that the territory visiting regulations state that
moving around in the Teiãi Bog is permitted only with a local
guide.
πaudona – here visitors are introduced to the history of
the development of the reserve, the valued natural elements
in it and the main goals of the reserve. Here is the
starting point of most of the hikes.
• Madona – Trepe embankment – 50 km long hillock
ridge and this is the highest element in the surrounding
terrain. The diversity of nature is increased in the area by
limestone layers and an abandoned peat field.
• Krustkalni reserve – there are 2.8km long trail and
resting places arranged for visitors to enable them to see
Dreima¿i lake and the spring rising from the steep bank.
• “Mazais Plenc¥tis” (the small boozer) – the
mesatrophe lake by the Madona-Trepe embankment.
• Giant oaks – can be seen near Mïtriene at “Rijzemes”
and “JaunÇres”. In the park there is also a linden tree
and an elm.
• Teiãi Bog – can be seen from the tourist board trail (~6
km). Excursions only with Teiãi Nature Reserve guides.
• Siksala – a rise of the sediments left by the glacier – an
island in the bog. Here in the old times refuge was sought
by slav old-believers, making here a settlement difficult
to access from outside. Their descendants still live here.
• Barkava oak grove – almost undisturbed, genetically
high quality oak gove with black alder mixture.
Botanical restriced area 44.1 ha. Nesting birds are black
stork and middle spotted woodpecker.
• PeleãÇre Bog – one of the largest moss bogs in Latvia
south of Teiãi Bog. Here nest the whimbrel, black-tailed
godwit, golden plover, common crane, great grey shrike.
The black-throated diver also has been noticed here.
• Pottery studio – the pottery studio of Baiba Dumpe
at the farm “Br¥vnieki-KolberÆi”. Here one can try out the
skill of the potter, as well as watch and listen to the atists
the nature museum of the
Devonian period. In several
places in Latvia one can see 350
million year old bedrock formations.
That is as a symbol of Latvia`s eternity. For tourists the most
intereting sites are to be found in the Gauja prehistoric valley, and
in particular in the Amata prehistoric valley.
The west coast of Kurzeme
A white sand coast-line approx. 250 km
long. The formation of the shore line
varies. Particularly popular is the steep
shore line at Japplerkalne – a unique geological
formation from the quarternary period. The
up to 16 m high steep slope is occasionally
cut by the wild-rose and black alder covered
gullies of the coast line`s small streams.
More appropriate for relaxation are the
wide sandy beaches.
GUIDELINES FOR THE ECOTOURIST
The ecotourist must
recognise his responsibility
towards the place and the
people he is visiting. The
visit of the ecotourist must
be as imperceptible as
possible. But along with
ones obligations it is
important to know
one`s rights.
The rights and duties
of the tourist:
• The tourist has the right to stay
and move freely about state and
municipal forests ( if it is not indicated
differently in legislative acts),
as well as gather wild berries, fruit,
nuts, mushrooms and medicinal
herbs;
• In a forest the tourist's stay and free
movement can be impeded by the
owner or legal possessor of the forest.
In such a case the appropriate
territory must be marked off with
warning signs. If the territory is not
marked off and it does not have
appropriate warning signs the
tourist can move about freely in
the private forest, gather wild
berries, fruit, nuts, mushrooms and
medicinal herbs;
• The duty of the tourist, when in
the forest, is to observe forest fire
safety regulations, not damage forest
soil and the forest infrastructure,
not pollute the forest with
garbage, observe regulations in
using rest places, not damage birds`
nests and ant hills and not harm
forest plants and animals in any
way;
• the width of shoreline right-of-way
along private water shores is 4 m,
along other shores 10 m, but along
the sea coast 20 m. That means
that tourists may proceed the
width of the shoreline right-of-way
without a fee along river banks,
lake shores and sea coasts.
What must the bicycle
tourist know?
• The rider must have the transport
vehicle rider's licence with him;
• The bicycle must be in good technical
condition. The bicycle must
have breaks, a warning bell, and
light reflectors: white in front, red
in the back, on both sides (spikes
of the wheels) and on the pedals
(front and back) two orange (yellow);
• Riding along a bicycle path, road
side or sidewalk during the dark
hours of the day/night period or on
the unlighted sections of the road
or, with limited visibility the bicycle
must have in front a lighted
white light lantern, but in the back
– a red lantern;
• The bicycle riders must proceed in
one line along a road, as close to
the right side of the path as possible.
If not interfering with pedestrians
the bicycle rider is permitted to
ride also on the sidewalk.
What must the fisherman –
tourist know?
• All persons who have acquired the
fishing card may fish in the lakes
and rivers of Latvia. The cards may
be obtained in district post offices
and fishing-gear stores. In places
where fishing with licence only is
permitted in addition to the fishing
card one must also obtain a
licence;
• For persons up to 16 years of age
and older than 65 fishing is permitted
without the fishing card. But
the person must have some identification
document with him.
• In private lakes or lakes that are
within the borders of one landowner
and where the state does not own
the fishing rights, the fishing rights
belong to the land owner. The owner
may use the fishing rights himself, or
may permit other persons or juridical
persons to use them;
• Fishing in the waters of the protected
nature territories can take
place according to fishing regulations
and the territory's own protection
and use regulations;
• Fishermen have the right to use the
free shoreline rights-of way: along
the sea coast – 20 m, along private
shore line – 4 m, along other
shorelines – 10 m;
therefore, it is advisable to get vaccinated
against tick-boene
encephalitis. The tourists` clothing
must be closely fitting, after a hike
it is advisable to shake out all
clothing and check the body;
• It is advised to swim only in well
set-up swimming areas;
• Must not use unknown plants and
mushrooms for food;
• Must inform the appropriate
regional environment offices or
the particular nature territory's
administration about the protected
nature territory's regulation disregard
or other transgressions.
