Furthermore, hunting, as the name indicates, applies to the specific names and
descriptions referring to numerous species of game and activities linked with
hunt management. There is a large amount of vocabulary that is continuously
expanding. However, there is also a need to eliminate the old vocabulary that
has no application in contemporary usage. This is a crucial issue because of the
richness of the hunting sociolect and the ignorance of the rest of society which
uses the vocabulary in an inappropriate way or changes meanings at its own
discretion.
The theoretical background stresses the most crucial features that serve as
the tools for describing hunting phenomena. For the needs of this research work,
I start with a detailed description of the concept of discourse. Because of the
complexity of this term, which can be understood in many ways, discourse can
be characterized as any coherent succession of sentences, either spoken, or, in
most cases written ones (Matthews 1997: 100). The basis for the notions of
discourse constituted by the ideas proposed by the French linguists (Jaillet 2002,
Achard 1993, Beneviste 1996, Mainguenean 1991) as well as the opinion
represented by Teun van Dijk ([1997] 2001). All the factors linked with the
definition of discourse aim at establishing one type of discourse, namely, a
hunting discourse (a subtype of a sporting discourse) whose task is to disclose
all the meanings of hunting words and valuable features of hunters’ utterances.
The present article focuses on four major assumptions, that is, the concept of
discourse, sporting discourse, hunting discourse and the sociolect. The crucial
issue in this discussion is the sequence of the proposed notions. In my opinion,
discourse phenomena can be viewed as the most general ones, in which sporting
discourse is immersed. Moreover, sporting discourse includes in its structure the
hunting discourse and it is a focal element in the establishment of the hunting
discourse. The sociolect is the last aspect dealt with and is subject to hunting
discourse. All the ideas are interdependent and the order they are looked at is
essential to their correct understanding.
