As for abstract arguments, dor mostly refers to an action, as in (13), or a state, as
in (14) that the speaker wants to happen again:
(13) Nicăieri dorul nostru de desăvârşire nu s-a arătat mai clar
şi mai cu tărie ca în cuprinsul limbii.
“Nowhere appeared our dor for perfection appear clearer
and stronger than within our language”.
(Grigore Vieru: O istorie vie “A Living History”)
(14) Lăsară numai soŃiei sale şi junelui său fiu câmpul Gerend,
spre a putea suferi amărăciunea stării de faŃă şi a îndulci
dorul sării trecute.
“They left to his wife and his young son the Gerend plot
of land, so that they may bear the bitterness of their
present state and sweeten the dor for their past state”.
(Nicolae Bălcescu: Românii supt Mihai-voievod Viteazul
“The Romanians under Prince Michael the Brave”)
In many cases the argument is omitted, as in (15):
(15) […] cine poate fără dor, făr-umilinŃă
Acea pulbere să calce, al eroilor mormânt, […]
“[…] who can without dor, without humility,
Step on that dust, the heroes’ grave […]”
(Gheorghe Asachi: La Italia “In Italy”)
In NSM terms, these observations refer to the class of “substantives”
(Wierzbicka 1996: 35) that can be the argument of dor. The conclusion is that
there is no restriction: both SOMEONE and SOMETHING may hold this position.
Moreover, any verb belonging to the class of NSM semantic primes may occur
as object, as there is no restriction to the type of state or action expressed by it.
Defining dor in NSM terms
Breban’s (1987: 306-307) definition of dor mentioned in one of the above
sections, enriched with the observations on the semantics of dor, render possible
