The meaning of “pain” is in (4) the most prevalent component, whereas “love”
can be assumed, as one who was in love with the girl. Moreover, “nostalgia” can
also be assigned, as the boy had already met the girl.
(5) Dorul de călătorie se deşteptase în mine.
“The dor for travelling woke up in me”
(Vasile Alecsandri: Vasile Porojan)
The “wish” component is the most prevalent one, but “nostalgia” can also be
spotted, as one may assume that the writer had already travelled.
(6) De pe plaiu-nstrăinării
Unde zac şi simt că mor
De amarul desperării
Şi de-al Ńării mele dor.
“From abroad
Where I lie and feel like dying
Of the bitterness of desperation
And of the dor for my country”
(Vasile Alecsandri – Dridri)
Obviously, “nostalgia” together with “pain” are the prevalent components of
dor, but “love” (for one’s country”) cannot be excluded. This means that
whenever the “pain” component is identified, at least one of the other two is also
present. The conclusion is that the three components are in a hierarchical
structure, where “pain” may be added to one of the other two components, or to
both of them. Moreover, a third level, assigning indefiniteness, ends up the
meaning hierarchy. This hierarchical structure is represented in Figure 1.
