Façade 25 April - 16 May Showcasing new artwork developed as part of WCAC Youth Arts Programme. This year’s Youth Exhibition takes the theme of Façade.
The Friday Night Youth Arts Group, - 15 young people aged between 12 and 19 - have been exploring this theme since November 2008. Alongside their participation in a performance project, supported by an award from the Arts Council and commissioned by the Youth Arts Advisory Committee (YAAC), with artist Amanda Coogan, they have also produced artwork for this exhibition.The project is facilitated by Alison Trim and Caoimhe Pendred and questions the clichés and assumptions society places on teenagers. The second-level schools project invited school groups to explore others artwork through drawing. Students from St Goban’s College, Bantry; Mercy Heights Secondary School, Skibbereen; Sacred Heart Secondary School, Clonakilty and Clonakilty Community College developed drawings that explore the theme ‘facsimile’, meaning to make similar, and to transmit or communicate an image, referring to the contemporary practice of referencing and recycling art history and popular culture. The drawings were submitted for the exhibition via fax machine. This project was facilitated by Toma Mc- Cullim and Anne Marie McInerney. WCAC’s outreach programme in Bantry Youth Café with artist Sharon Dipity has been running on Friday evenings since before Christmas. The project explored the façades created by addictions, with the participants making latex masks from clay moulds for the Bantry St Patrick’s Day parade, that are displayed as wall pieces here. The exterior façade of the Arts Centre building will also be transformed for the duration of the exhibition by a group of young people working with artist Steve Simmonds. Steve’s background in film, TV and theatre, creating sets and sculptural reproductions for everything from Dr Who to Star Wars, and Bond to Full Metal Jacket, gives him the can-do attitude and knowledge of creative construction needed to encourage and guide the group in designing, constructing and installing the ‘façade’ during an intensive weekend project as part of the Youth Event. In a year when the planning and design of the new West Cork Arts Centre building is forefront in our minds, this project gives young people the opportunity to temporarily recreate an arts centre building in their own unique way.
