Kindergarten Teacher Checklist:
Things to do before you arrive at the
Holifield Science Learning Center
*** Team Leaders: Please pass this information on to the rest of the team.
Preparation Check List:
Please be prepared by having your entire group for each session (AM & PM)
equally divided into 2 teams prior to your arrival. Team A should exit the bus
first and will begin indoors with the animal lesson while Team B will start
outdoors with the trail lesson.
Be sure to inform your FANS manager at least two weeks prior to your field trip
date.
Please make sure students wear nametags with their first name only in large
print.
Students and adults need to wear long pants to prevent contact with poison ivy
and wear an old pair of closed-toe shoes with socks. No flip flops, sandals, or
cowboy boots allowed.
Limit parent chaperones to no more than 2 or 3 per class. Please communicate to
parent volunteers that it is most helpful if they participate and/or assist in the lessons
being taught by the HSLC staff without giving away the answers. Remind them that
a field trip is not an appropriate time for a parent-teacher conference or to socialize
with other parents.

If rainy, have students bring a raincoat or poncho since we do go outside during
light rain.
Bring your digital camera for memories! Please do not allow students to bring
their own cameras on the field trip.

Dear Parent,
Kindergarten is planning a field trip to the Bill Holifield Science Learning
Center. This is an outdoor learning center and an indoor living material center.
The purpose of our trip is to learn more about nature through the use of our
senses and by asking questions.
The trip will be taken during the regular school day. The children should
arrive at school at their regular kindergarten time. They will ride on a Plano ISD
bus and return to school in time for regular dismissal.
Our trip is scheduled for _________________________. Please dress your
child in long pants, socks and old closed-toe shoes (no sandals or flip flops) on
that day. Please do not send snacks or drinks.
If you are free to accompany us and would like to help supervise a small
group at the center, please indicate below. NOTE: District policy allows ONLY
adult volunteers and enrolled kindergarten students to be a part of our outing.

Dear Parent:
Thank you for volunteering to participate in your school’s field trip to the Holifield
Science Learning Center. In order to provide the kindergarten students a more
engaging and safe experience, you will be expected to lead a small group of
students during the animal lesson.
Responsibilities include:
• guiding 5-6 students through the animal room
• supervising student safety, and
• asking questions about what they see and hear
HSLC staff will depend on your assistance in making sure students do
not put fingers in or on cages and that they walk quietly while touring
the animal room. Please watch the students closely (not the animals)
and keep your group together at all times. Your active role in the
animal lesson will be greatly appreciated and will be most beneficial to
the students.

the field trip time will be spent outside in a forest on walking trails.
Insect repellent may only be applied at home before coming to school.
If rainy, bring a raincoat or poncho since we do go outside during
light rain.
Please do not bring younger siblings on your field trip. Plano I.S.D. insurance
cannot be responsible for younger siblings and this poses a liability problem for
the school district.
Please turn off or silence your cell phone before you arrive, and do
not use it during the field trip.
