This 494 ha site is an intermediate bog and exhibits characteristics of both blanket bog and raised bog. It is the largest of a string of bogs along the south-western edge of the Pentlands' watershed. The site is designated for fen, marsh and swamp habitats, and its wildfowl interest. Hermand Beechwood is classified in the Ancient Woodland inventory as Long Established Woodland of Plantation Origin and was originally planted in the late 18th century. This 328 ha site holds three characteristic upland habitats: dry upland heath, blanket bog and flush communities within hill cleughs. It forms part of the Craigengar SAC (see above).
