DENNIS JAMES, glass armonica: Dennis James' unique musical talents include
a rare specialty - playing the glass armonica, an instrument whose hauntingly
ethereal sound caused it to be dubbed "the instrument of gods.,, Linda
Ronstadt was so intrigued by James and his glass armonica, she invited him to
perform on her album "winter Lights." (coincidentally, the two most famous
works for glass armonica were composed by Mozart. James will perform
both.) In addition to being a glass "armonicist," James is internationally
renowned as the leading expert and performer of music for silent films. James first played for
Mainly Mozart in r998.
JOHN LILL, piano: Considered "... one of the greatest pianists alive
today... " (The Glasgow Herald) - John Lill will finish the musical feat
he began at the zooS Festivalwhen he played five of Beethoven,s
six piano concertos. This year he will finish the cycle by opening the
Festival with a performance of Beethoven's final piano concerto. Lill
gave his first piano recital at the age of nine. At age t8, he performed
Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto under SirAdrian Boult. lnt963,
Lill made his London debut playing Beethoven's piano Concerto
No. 5 at the Royal Festival Hall. In .r97o he won the Moscow
I nternational Tcha ikovsky competition. Lil's repertoire includes
more than 7o concertos, and he is acclaimed in particular as a leading interpreter of Beethoven. Lill
has performed in over 50 countries, both as a recitalist and as a concerto soloist, appearing with the
world's leading symphony orchestras. His list of recordings is prodigious, including: the complete
Beethoven and Rachmaninoff piano concertos; both Brahms piano concertos; and complete
Beethoven and Prokofiev piano sonatas. In 2ooo, Lill suffered what could have been career-ending
injuries to both his hands when muggers slashed his hands in the course of a robbery attempt. He
recovered quickly and resumed his career. Lill lives in London and was awarded an OBE by eueen
Elizabeth in t978. He was named by the eueen a CBE in zoo5.
ANTHONY McGlLL, clarinet: Noted for "...the sweetness of his tone and the
energy of his phrasing" (The New yorkTimes), Anthony Mccill is considered
