He’s back! The late Mordecai Richler had planned more adventures
for his small hero and now, with the full support of the Richler
family, award-winning author Cary Fagan carries on the tradition
in a hilarious story for a whole new generation of Jacob fans.
After Jacob Two-Two’s father writes a very important novel,
the family makes plans to move to Canada.
They board the SS Spring-a-Leak for a journey across the ocean.
Jacob Two-Two makes some new acquaintances — the unbelievably
handsome Captain Sparkletooth, the acrobatic Bubov Brothers, the
failed toy inventor Mr. Peabody, and the giant but gentle
Morgenbesser. Most important, he makes friends with young
Cindy Snootcastle, who keeps a secret treasure in her pocket.
But something is wrong on the SS Spring-a-Leak. A series of
clues — a black eye patch; a parrot who squawks “Apple sauce in
your underpants!”; and a sailing ship flying the Jolly Roger — can
only mean trouble. Will the intrepid Shapiro and the fearless
O’Toole really be left on a desert island? Will Jacob Two-Two
be made to walk the plank?
Jacob Two-Two on the High Seas is a treat for those who know Jacob
and for those who are about to meet one of the most endearing
characters in children’s literature.
Finn the Half-Great, Theo Caldwell’s first novel for young adults,
tells the story of Ireland’s most beloved heroes with humor and
heart. Finn McCool, at fourteen feet, thinks he is the tallest
thing in the Emerald Isle. That is, until he ventures outside his
childhood valley. Finn soon discovers that ancient Britain is a
land of giants, dragons, wizards, and men, in which he is only
one little fellow.
Despite treating those about him as decently as he can, Finn
finds he has enemies all over. Even before he was born, cruel
creatures known as the Frost Giants killed Finn’s father and tried
to do away with his mother. When Finn learns what befell his
parents, his first order of business is to seek out the Frost Giants
and take revenge.
In later years, Finn becomes a calmer chap, living in idle bliss
on his hill, known as Knockmany, with his beloved wife, Oonagh.
But Finn the Half-Great’s troubles are not over. Ireland and all
of Britain are being overrun by mortal men, who have no patience
for bigger fellows like Finn. When Knockmany is attacked by
humans, and Oonagh is kidnapped by their leader, Finn sets out
to rally Britain’s remaining giants and bring her back.
Steeped in legend, Finn the Half-Great is completely thrilling as
it introduces an unforgettable character and adventures both
ancient and new.
It is 1595, and the rabbi’s son Jacob is frustrated with having to
live in the walled ghetto known as Jewish Town. Why can’t he
venture outside of the gates and explore the beautiful city? His
father warns him that Passover is a dangerous time to be a Jew
and that the people from outside accuse the Jews of dreadful
deeds. But one night, Jacob follows his father and two
companions as they unlock the ghetto gates and proceed to the
river, where they mold a human shape from the mud of the
riverbank. When the rabbi speaks strange words, the shape is
infused with life and the Golem of Prague is born.
In this breathtaking retelling of a timeless tale, Irene N.
Watts’s beautiful words are complemented by the haunting blackand-white
images of artist Kathryn E. Shoemaker.
PRAISE FOR GOOD-BYE MARIANNE: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL:
“Shoemaker’s style is gentle, quiet, shaded, and soft-edged. She filters
the horrors, thus allowing some access to this world to quite young
readers…. The particular appeal of Marianne’s story is that the ordinary
woes of childhood – loneliness, boredom, betrayal by a friend – are in
the foreground. In its graphic novel incarnation, the story retains this
familiarity and welcomes a new crop of readers.” – Quill & Quire
German-born IRENE N. WATTS is a writer and playwright who has
worked throughout Europe and Canada. Her play, “Lillie,” based on
her novel Flower, won first prize in UNESCO’s Biennial Playwriting
Award. Her novels Good-bye Marianne, Finding Sophie, and Remember Me, have
had international acclaim. She makes her home by the sea in
Vancouver.
KATHRYN E. SHOEMAKER has illustrated over thirty children’s books
and has written four books for teachers. Her work ranges from books,
filmstrips, and greeting cards, to posters, calendars, and illustrations
and articles for magazines. She is currently working on her doctorate
Vanishing Girl
The Boy Sherlock Holmes – His Third Case
Shane Peacock
The third case in the compelling Boy Sherlock Holmes series is
full of as many twists and turns as the backstreets of Victorian
London.
When a wealthy young girl vanishes as if by magic in Hyde
Park, Sherlock is once again driven to prove himself. In a heartstopping
race against time, an innocent boy’s survival depends on
Sherlock’s ability to solve the mysterious puzzle of the Vanishing
Girl. As complex as the maze that protects the missing girl’s
hiding place, this case takes Sherlock racing to the countryside,
the coast, and into the lair of a menagerie of exotic, dangerous
creatures.
Haunted by memories of his shattered family, goaded by his
enemies, driven to heal the fragile relationship between him and
the beautiful Irene Doyle, Sherlock makes an almost fatal mistake.
In the end, his brilliant powers of deduction and the steadfast
eccentric Sigerson Bell save the day. Soon, very soon, the world
will come to know him as the master detective of all time.
SHANE PEACOCK was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and grew up in
Kapuskasing. A biographer, journalist, and screenwriter, he is also the
author of several novels and plays. He has received many honors for his
John Newton led a rich life. He was a God-fearing man and a
successful seafaring trader; his cargo was a lucrative business, for
his wares were human beings. In 1748, Newton’s ship, the
Greyhound, sailed the triangular trade route from Liverpool to
Africa and on to Antigua as it had many times before. But on one
journey, at the height of the slave trade, a storm raged. Feeling all
was lost, Newton prayed that if he were spared, he would leave the
cruel world of slave trading behind forever. That night, Newton’s
prayers were answered, and true to his word, he turned his back
on the slave trade. In fact, he went on to become an ardent
abolitionist. Among Newton’s many achievements, his greatest
legacy would be the most beloved hymn of all: “Amazing Grace.”
Out of Slavery: The Journey to Amazing Grace is the story of slavery as
well as the man and the hymn.
LINDA GRANFIELD is the award-winning author of nearly twenty-five
PRAISE FOR AMAZING GRACE: THE STORY OF THE HYMN
“The depth of research in the text is admirable and the prose tells the
story without excuses or moralizing. Janet Wilson’s illustrations are
equally exceptional; each page beautifully captures the era without
affectation or melodrama.” Highly Recommended – Children’s Book
Say What?
The Weird and Mysterious Journey
of the English Language
Gena K. Gorrell
More than a million words, weird spellings, words that are
spelled the same but pronounced differently or vice versa. Where
on Earth did the English language come from? The answer is
that English isn’t just the speech of one nation. It’s the memory
of thousands of years of history. It tracks the places people came
from, the places they went, the adventures they had, the friends
and enemies they made, the battles they won and lost.
As English changed and grew, it became a jumble of sounds,
words, and rules from countless languages and nations. And it’s
still changing and growing every day. More than seventy percent
of all English words were born someplace other than England.
That’s why English can be so confusing and inconsistent. And
that’s why English is the richest, most international, and most
versatile language in the world.
This innovative book takes us on a journey through time to
unravel and demystify the story of English. Word games,
intriguing facts, and tricky quizzes add an element of fun while
enriching readers’ knowledge and understanding.
GENA K. GORRELL is one of Canada’s finest writers of nonfiction for
young people. She is also a highly respected editor. Her book Heart and
Soul: The Story of Florence Nightingale won the Norma Fleck Award for
Nonfiction. She has also been a first-aid instructor and a volunteer
officer in the Toronto Police Marine Unit. She lives in Toronto with
In Tyranny, brisk, spare text and illustrations that deal head-on
with anorexia propel the reader along on Anna’s journey as she
falls prey to the eating disorder, personified as her tormentor,
Tyranny.
The novel starts with a single question: “How did I get
here?” The answer lies in the pages that follow, and it’s far from
simple. Pressured by media, friends, the workplace, personal
relationships, and fashion trends, Anna descends into a
seemingly unending cycle of misery. And whenever she tries to
climb out of the abyss, her own personal demon, Tyranny, is
there to push her back in. The contest seems uneven, and it
might be except for one thing: Anna’s strength of character has
given rise to her deadly enemy. Ironically, it is that same strength
of character that has the ultimate power to save her from the
ravages of Tyranny.
Brilliantly and realistically presented, Tyranny is a must-read
for anyone looking for a better understanding of eating disorders
and for everyone looking for a compelling page-turner that is
truly a story of triumph and hope.
LESLEY FAIRFIELD is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and
Lesley’s personal thirty-year struggle with anorexia and bulimia has
The War to End All Wars
The Story of World War I
Jack Batten
Winner of the Norma Fleck Award for
Children’s Nonfiction
In the decade leading up to 1914, Europe had never known such
prosperity. But the times were not good enough for the continent’s
most powerful nations: Germany wanted a navy that matched
England’s; Russia wanted an army as large and as disciplined as
Germany’s; the Austro-Hungarian Empire wanted more respect;
and England felt compelled to teach the others about civilized
relations. How terrible could a war be?
In this riveting account of a tragic episode in world history,
author Jack Batten takes readers through a far bloodier conflict
than mankind had ever before endured. Meet the soldiers who
fought the deadly battles along the Western Front. Follow the trail
of flying ace Billy Bishop as he tangles in the air with the Red Baron.
Learn the strategy of Britain’s Grand Fleet of warships as it heads
into the biggest sea battle in history. Discover how civilians
decoded virtually all the messages the Germans sent to their ships
around the world.
From the Battle of the Somme, Gallipoli, Passchendale, and
Vimy Ridge to the war’s final battles, The War to End All Wars evokes
the heroism and suffering of men from every country, whose
stories changed the face of the world forever. With maps, index,
and selected bibliography.
JACK BATTEN was a lawyer but has become a well-known author,
journalist, reviewer, and radio personality. He has written over thirty
books, including biographies, crime novels, and books about sports.
He has written for magazines as varied as Chatelaine and Rolling Stone. His
book The Man Who Ran Faster Than Everyone: The Story of Tom Longboat received
For as long as they’ve existed, pirates have conjured up visions of
high-seas adventure and skullduggery, sea chases and bloody
battles, dangerous coastal lairs and buried treasure. Rightly so,
for ever since ships have carried valuable cargo, pirates have
enraged monarchs and struck terror into the hearts of honest
seamen with their willingness to risk life and limb for an
undeserved share of the riches. Whether the cargo was gold or
silver, spices or silks, animal or human, there have always been
villains ruthless enough to kill or be hanged for it.
From the days of the Vikings to the present and in all the
oceans of the world, pirates have made their presence known and
feared. Recorded here are their stories along with striking images
of ships, storms at sea, and secret harbors where “black ships”
could be re-stocked and refitted.
Award-winning author and artist William Gilkerson has
spent years researching and painting their colorful history. From
the terrible Black Beard to the fascinating Granuaile, or Grace
O’Malley as the English called her, they have come to life under
his brush. One can almost hear the creak of timbers, the snap of
canvas while turning the pages. This gift book is a rich treasure in
its own right.
Bullying and the ability to rise above it are at the heart of this
strikingly beautiful picture book. All school-aged children have
either bullied, been bullied, or witnessed bullying, and all too
often, they feel powerless to stop what has been set in motion.
Such is not the case with Eliza. Her mother has given her
“wings to fly” and the ability to see all the possibilities that lie
before her. So, when bullies pick on the new student, Lainey,
gradually robbing her of her smile and ability to paint beautiful
pictures, Eliza wants to help, and she does, by finding a way to
show Lainey all that she can be. Then in the schoolyard, Eliza
stands up to the bullies. One by one, the other children add their
voices, and soon the bullies have skulked away.
Lyrical and eloquent yet realistic and down to earth, Nan
Forler’s text is complemented beautifully with François Thisdale’s
haunting images. This is a book for every child, every classroom,
and every library.
From the heartbreaking Mi’kmaq story of Minnow, a mermaid in
the Atlantic who must choose between two worlds to that of Water
Lily and her five brothers, told by the Coos in British Columbia,
creatures that inhabit fantastic realms appear in many First
Nation stories. C. J. Taylor draws from those stories and from
her own Mohawk heritage in this collection of haunting tales
about some of the powerful spirits who touch the lives of human
folk. The spirits of heaven and earth from the Ute help bring an
understanding of the stars in the sky. The Cree story, “Souls in
the Fog,” presents the battle between the good and the evilminded.
The Ojibwa “Fairy Village” is a unique and touching
love story. Illustrated with her own powerful oil paintings, this is
a collection to read and an excellent story-teller’s resource.
C. J. TAYLOR is an internationally acclaimed artist and children’s
author of Mohawk heritage. Her paintings are in many private
collections across North America. A self-taught artist and storyteller,
she has organized exhibitions of Native art in several cities and has
traveled extensively, helping make the rich cultural history of the First
Nations accessible to young people. She now lives in British Columbia.
PRAISE FOR ALL THE STARS IN THE SKY:
“A highlight of books by C.J. Taylor are her vivid interpretations of the
legends she has gathered. A self-taught artist, she combines the
dreamscape of the traditional story with her own modern abstract
sensibilities. Bright colours, sweeping lines and unusual characters . . .
make them interesting to study and interpret.” Highly ecommended.
Timmerman is mysterious. Moreover, he is bitterly resented by
the young girl who lives in the same boardinghouse. After all, he
occupies her beloved granddad’s now-vacant room. How dare he
think he can take that space?
But try as she might, the girl cannot dislike him forever.
Timmerman is kind, gentle, and soft-spoken to everyone, even
the dog, who lets him untangle her matted coat. Despite herself,
the girl becomes fond of him.
When rumors begin to fly, she tries not to listen. But it’s
hard, especially when Timmerman is often seen late at night,
wandering the streets with a shovel and sack over his shoulder.
Is he stashing stolen goods? Burying dead cats? The girl takes a
black eye for defending him at school. Even so, curiosity compels
her to ask the question she knows she shouldn’t ask. Though
Timmerman promises an explanation in time, he avoids a direct
answer and disappears shortly after, leaving the girl to worry
and wonder.
Not until spring is the answer to Timmerman’s nighttime
walks beautifully presented, leaving the entire street with a living
Whether the rivalry is about territory, possessions, the biggest, or
the most, anyone with a sibling will relate to the ongoing
competition between these two canines. Taken to ridiculous
heights, this series of situations with surprisingly human
overtones illustrates their ongoing struggle to get along. It’s a
rivalry that knows no bounds.
Julius the Elder describes how he dominates, tricks, subdues,
and, yes, even admires his exuberant young pup of a brother.
William the Upstart, on the other hand, demonstrates he is his
own dog whatever the consequences. The results are hilarious
and tinged with history. In the end, no one would ever dare to
question the singular bond demonstrated in Brothers.
This age-old subject has been given a new twist by two very
funny men. It’s perfect for almost any occasion, especially if a
good chuckle is in order. And as we laugh at the antics of Julius
and William, we just may learn to laugh at ourselves.
In 1877 in Rochester, New York, George Eastman couldn’t
understand why picture-taking was so difficult. Having left
school at fourteen to support his mother and two sisters, George
decided to find out by making photography his hobby. He packed
up glass plates, a plate holder, a tent, a heavy tripod, a thick piece
of black cloth, a water jug, and chemicals and set off to take his
first photograph.
George realized that not many people could own a camera –
they were too expensive and the size of today’s microwave ovens!
But how could he make picture-taking easier? Eventually, George
created dry plates, and they were such a success that he opened
his own dry-plate company in 1881. But this was only the
beginning – George went on to invent film and the Brownie
camera. The rest is history.
Monica Kulling’s spunky, playful text is beautifully
complemented by the stunning pen-and-ink with watercolor
illustrations of artist Bill Slavin. It’s a Snap! George Eastman’s First Photo
introduces a new series for Tundra – the Great Idea Series – a
Much has been written about war and remembrance, but very
little of it has been for young children. As questions come from a
young grandchild, his grandpa talks about how, as a very young
man, he was as proud as a peacock in uniform, busy as a beaver
on his Atlantic crossing, and brave as a lion charging into battle.
Soon, the old man’s room is filled with an imaginary menagerie
as the child thinks about different aspects of wartime. But as he
pins medals on his grandpa’s blazer and receives his own red
poppy in return, the mood becomes more somber.
Outside, the crowd gathered for the veterans’ parade grows as
quiet as a mouse, while men and women – old and young –
march past in the rain. A trumpet plays and Grandpa lays a
wreath in memory of his lost friend. Just then, the child
imagines an elephant in the mist. “Elephants never forget,” he
whispers to his grandpa. “Then let’s be elephants,” says the old
man, as he wipes water from his eyes and takes his grandson’s
hand.
Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion has relevance to a growing
number of families, as new waves of soldiers leave home.
In partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
(CAMH), Tundra is proud to launch an important series of
books for children who have to cope with adult-sized problems.
Young Alex’s father had been a policeman until he began to
suffer from depression, perhaps the most common mental health
issue we face. Alex’s questions are those that are often asked by
the children of parents who have depression: is the parent simply
lazy? Does he no longer care? And is it something I can catch,
like a cold?
In simple, straightforward language, the book explains what
depression is and how it is treated. It also prepares a child for
working with a helping professional. And perhaps most
important, it reassures a child that he or she is not alone.
Written by Canada’s foremost experts in the field, this is an
important book to spur discussion and allay fears of those
affected by depression.
JOE WEISSMANN was born in Austria. He grew up in Israel and then
moved to Montreal, Quebec, with his parents. He studied art at the
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Concordia University and has been
freelancing ever since. Joe has illustrated a number of books including
Mummies, Magic, Three Tales of Adventure, and Mom, The School Flooded. He has
taught illustration at Sheridan College and is now living in Millbrook,
Ontario, with his wife, two dogs, and three cats.
