St Andrew’s and St George’s West Edinburgh June 2011 Diary and Newsletter 2

In Praise of Intolerance!
Thanks to all of you for the warmth of your welcome and for the
generosity of your fine gifts. I really like the photographs of the
church buildings as well as the new prayer stole, which I have
been pleased to wear. It has all been thoroughly enjoyable and
exciting. Donna and I are looking forward to moving into your
manse at 25 Comely Bank at the end of May. I hope after this to
settle into a more regular pattern of work. It is my hope to begin
to visit more members in June. I did appreciate the meetings
with the staff.
What an extraordinary start to my period of ministry with you at
St Andrew’s and St George’s West. In my first three weeks we
have had funerals, a baptism, eleven extremely varied Sunday
services. In addition there have been visits from Scotland’s
St Andrew’s and St George’s West Edinburgh June 2011 Diary and Newsletter 3

Makar, Liz Lochhead, the Moderator of the General Assembly
of the Church of Scotland John Christie followed by the Lord
and Lady Provost of Edinburgh, Revd George and Mrs
Elizabeth Grubb.
I have received many new insights. There are a huge number of
capable, willing helpers within the congregation. People work
exceptionally hard for the causes in which they believe. New
people are attracted to our congregation for different reasons –
the high quality of the music, prior family connections, the
attractive buildings and their location. When Dr Ruth
Shakespeare came to have a chat about her commissioning at
morning worship on the 15 th of May service before moving to
serve in Southern Malawi, she told me she had come to St
Andrew’s and St George’s West because of the bell-ringers.
Further, I have also noted that the congregation is intolerant. It
struck me forcibly from the first week. There is an intolerance
to poverty and injustice particularly revealed through the
commitment to the poorest people in the world through support
in various ways for Christian Aid. I was immensely impressed
by the amount of time, energy and the Herculean effort given to
this important work. It revealed to me something about the
qualities and values of the volunteers undertaking these major
commitments. Well done to all who were involved in the
planning and delivery of this high quality sale. I was simply
asked to contribute by arranging kind weather for a few days in
May, which is obviously just a small task for any minister in the
Church of Scotland!
I hope to spend more time with you in your homes and at
church over the coming months.
Live humbly, love generously and enjoy worship.
Every blessing, Ian
festival
programme are our Festival volunteers. If
you are interested in volunteering for the
Festival of Spirituality and Peace, have a
This year our Festival theme is exploring faiths and concepts of
reality and how the two interrelate.
News from Church Groups
Amnesty International - good news!
In January our Amnesty group sent greetings cards to
Mohamed El Sharkawi who was detained for 15 years without
trial in Egypt. He has now been released and is with his mother
and son in Cairo. He has told Amnesty representatives that he
would like to thank everyone in the UK who wrote to him in
prison. Knowing that people were aware of his story helped give
him strength. He would like to be friends with everyone who
supported him!
Our Amnesty group will meet again in the Undercroft Cafe
at 12:30 on Tuesday 31st May. Please join us - all welcome
Chapel Group (formerly the House Group)
begins again on Thursday 2nd June at 10.30 am, continuing the
study of Timothy Kellar's book "The Prodigal God:
Rediscovering the Heart of the Christian Faith". We meet in the
Undercroft Chapel in George Street. New members are always
welcome.
Shandwick Place Book Group
meets on Monday 20 June at 10.15 for 10.30 in the Shandwick
Place building. Coffee is available at 10.15, the meeting starts
at 10.30. We are (still) reading "Tomorrow's Christian" by
Adrian B.Smith, but the main purpose of the meeting is
discussion of the issues arising from our reading. All welcome.
Inspiring Volunteers Awards 2011
Congratulations to Victoria Adams and Brian Warrender, two of
our volunteers at the Olive Tree Café in Shandwick Place, who
received awards from the Lord Provost at the “Inspiring
Volunteers” awards ceremony in Edinburgh on 26 May. Victoria
works both in the cafe and, on a Friday, at the reception desk.
She is always cheerful and takes an interest in the customers
she serves, especially the elderly. Brian is a real asset in the
cafe kitchen and has in his time as volunteer and encouraged
by Colin Sharp, The Olive Tree Cafe cook, increased his
confidence and skills - he is the baker of excellent scones for
the cafe.
chartered accountants, company secretary, history graduate,
coming from as far away as America.
For 3 weeks of the year we come and go as regular as the tides
that wash up on our beaches, sifting the sand and battering the
rocks. We too sift and sort, prevaricate and price, suffer
frustration, drink tea and coffee, polish up silver, gold & crystal,
sort linens, hang pictures to best advantage, bake, cook and
sell.
Yes! You have guessed - we are the hundreds of volunteers
that make up the team for the annual Christian Aid Sale at St
Andrews and St Georges West. This year the amazing total of
£113,000 was raised by us to help alleviate poverty in the world
The Christian Aid total has reached £114,000. As our signwriter’s
poster in the church noticeboard outside says: “Thanks
to all who gave, who came, who helped”. Kathy Galloway,
Head of Christian Aid Scotland, will be present at the 11am
Service on Sunday 19 June to receive a cheque for the money
we have raised.
Christian Aid Sale 2011: The view from
the Vestibule
Despite Christian Aid being a whole year round effort, for most
of us it begins with Push-and-Shove Sunday. This year, in the
main, the weather was with us (despite April and May weather
being the wrong way round). We took out the furniture in the dry
and brought it back in the dry.
There were new things to try which were different from last year
and there were those of long-standing to reuse. There were old
friends who came to help from across the city, across Scotland,
the Continent and the Atlantic. There were also new friends to
make and to keep.
Sorting books at the front door was as busy as usual and kept
the whole team on the move. Next year we may even patent
this as a weight loss plan. New helpers were shown the church
sorting layout and then set to work.
Which leads us to the eclectic mix of books that are on sale:
Nordic fairy tales are alongside books on economics at the
beginning of sorting, not for any political points-scoring but in
that one is mythology and both are social sciences. There are
the usual funny discussions about the box marked “Better
Royals” and there are the many, many well wishers and tourists
to greet.
Working at the front door is different from working in a section.
Sections may have their own motto – ours on the front door is
“keep smiling and keep your feet clear”. A big thank you to all
our helpers and to all our donors – hope to see you next year.
Christian Aid Help -
Thank You
Our sale convener, Mary
Davidson, has already
thanked "all who gave, all
who came, and all who
bought", but I would like to
extend a personal thank
you to all those who
helped in whatever way
during the two weeks or
sorting and the week of
the Sale itself, not
forgetting the clearing-up
and cleaning of the
Church afterwards.
In particular I'm very
grateful for those who
completed help forms and
returned them to me
(whether as hard copy or
e-mail) and those who
responded to the special
pleas for extra help. The
Sale could not have gone
ahead without the help of
all of you.
Malawi News: 121 and Mulanje
On 15 May a Commissioning Service was held for Ruth
Shakespeare, who is moving to Southern Malawi as
Medical Director at Mulanje Mission Hospital. Ken Pattison
spoke some Words of Encouragement.
Ruth, can I start by giving my words of encouragement the
rather unprepossessing title of “121 and Mulanje”. One hundred
and twenty one years ago, “121” years ago, in 1890, 40% of the
missionaries at Blantyre Mission were paid for by the
congregation of St George's, Edinburgh.
This present congregation of St Andrew's and St George's West
is doubly descended from that congregation. And one of the
four missionaries funded directly by the then St George's in
Charlotte Square was the Rev. Robert Cleland, the founder of
Mulanje Mission. Robert Cleland had for some years looked out
40 miles across the plain towards the grandeur of Mulanje
Mountain and longed to expand the work of the Blantyre
Mission to Mulanje, and then 121 years ago, in 1890, his dream
came true and Mulanje Mission was founded.
St Andrew’s and St George’s West Edinburgh June 2011 Diary and Newsletter 18

So, with the historical connection with St George's, not to
mention former mission partners in Malawi who are members of
this congregation, I think you can be very assured of real and
meaningful support from St Andrew's and St George's West.
The work you are undertaking as Medical Director at Mulanje
Mission Hospital is crucial to the healthcare of a vast number of
people. The fact that you have worked as a doctor elsewhere in
southern Africa will equip you for the task ahead. It will enable
you to grasp the priorities. It will have taught you to pace
yourself appropriately. It will have given you a sensitivity to
African culture, which will be an immeasurable help as you get
established in a new situation.
So, as well as applying yourself to getting a good grasp of the
main local language, Chichewa, and participating, however
minimally, in the life of the local congregation, and doing all the
little things that will enable you to be effectively part of the
community you are serving, you must also look after yourself.
I don't know what you hobbies are, apart from bell-ringing, but I
would hope that one of them is hillwalking. Mulanje Mission is
only a couple of miles from Mount Mulanje itself, so you will
have a breathtaking view as soon as you draw your curtains in
the morning. And if you want a rest from the heat of the plain
you can have a cool holiday at the mission cottage after an
exhilarating 4,000 ft climb. And if you want to make it to the top
you only have another 3,500 ft to go.
But even if you stay at the level of the plain remember Psalm
“121” “I to the hills will lift mine eyes”. It is the prayer of all of us
that, in the words of the last verse of that Psalm “The Lord shall
keep thy soul: he shall preserve thee from all ill”.
Anchors Aweigh!
Sunday 15 May saw a Service of Commissioning for Dr Ruth
Shakespeare’s dedicated work in Malawi – the first “real”
service conducted for us by our new minister. As we steered
through a thoroughly prepared service including much
congregational participation, instruction for which was laid out
with great clarity in the “Order of Service,” we were aware
exactly what was expected of us, as a thoughtful, relaxed
presentation put Dr Ruth completely at her ease – with no
words wasted, all complemented by the meaningful work of a
well trained choir in particularly good voice. An occasion to
remember. An additional bonus was the fact that the Ladies of
the “Sparse Lunch” team benefited the funds of Christian Aid to
the tune of over six hundred pounds. Well done! It was good
once more to find a positive steady hand on the tiller. Welcome
aboard Ian!
Soul Marks workshops with Carol Marples
Art & Prayer Workshop
Leith School of Art
Saturday 4 June 2011 | 9.30-4.30 £36
Uncertain times, strange happenings, signs of hope and a new
way forward, these were all part of the post-resurrection and
Pentecost stories. Practical art will be combined with words,
images, music and silence to reflect on the relevance these
stories have for today. For more information and to book:
Space & Worship Workshop
St James Church Hall, Leith
Wednesday 22 June 2011 | 2.00pm-4.30pm £15
Soul Marks has been asked on several occasions to provide an
opportunity for people who are interested in the creative
development of an existing worship space - in a church, a hall
or other meeting place - to meet to exchange ideas and
information. This afternoon workshop is designed to offer ideas
for developing such spaces using examples of work that Soul
Marks has done in recent years, with a small taste of using art
in worship. It will explore the questions:
◊ If space speaks what are our worship spaces saying?
◊ How can art be used to enhance our worship environments?
◊ How can art help to enable the whole people of God to
worship?
Love And Do What You Will
Therefore once for all this short command is given to
you:"Love and do what you will."
If you keep silent, keep silent by love:
if you speak, speak by love;
if you correct, correct by love;
if you pardon, pardon by love;
let love be rooted in you,
and from the root nothing but good can grow.
Hospitality is not to change
people but to offer them
space where change can
take place.
It is not to bring men and
women over to our sides,
but to offer freedom not
disturbed by dividing lines
the paradox of hospitality
is that it wants to create
emptiness
not a fearful emptiness;
but a friendly emptiness
where strangers can enter
and discover themselves as
created free
