More Classical,
More News
This month, WGBH brings WCRB 99.5 into the WGBH family of noncommercial,
listener-supported public broadcasting stations, preserving full-time classical
radio in Boston. We couldn’t be more excited!
When we learned that WCRB was for sale, we realized that no other
purchaser would maintain the format of New England’s leading all-classical
station. We knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for WGBH. We’ve
been gratified to hear how pleased listeners are that WGBH will carry on such
a rich musical tradition—and that we’ll now have a broader, 24/7 stage for
WGBH’s inviting approach to classical music, on the air and online, as our
classical programs migrate to the new service. Yo-Yo Ma put it most succinctly
when he gave us an enthusiastic “two thumbs up!”
As we move our classical programs to 99.5 we’re thrilled to be able to
provide more of the in-depth perspective and analysis you appreciate on 89.7.
Our aim is to give you the context you need to better understand the issues of
the day, with a special focus on the topics that affect our region.
The new 89.7 WGBH, Boston’s NPR station, will provide a forum for the
myriad voices, stories and ideas of our shared community. As the producer of
The World as well as such television mainstays as Greater Boston, Frontline,
Nova and American Experience, we have extraordinary resources right in our
Guest Street studios that we now can tap to enrich the lineup of the new
89.7. Rest assured, you’ll still find the very best jazz and Celtic music on 89.7
alongside our expanded news and information programming.
You can learn more about 99.5 All Classical and 89.7 WGBH on pages 24
and 25. As this issue of ’GBH, The Members’ Guide goes to press, our plans for
the two radio services still are being confirmed. So for the very latest updates,
I invite you to visit wgbh.org/listen.
We’ll have many more details for you next month, as we make this
exciting transition. With so many opportunities for partnerships and
synergies, we expect both 99.5 and 89.7 to grow and develop as the months
progress. As the stations evolve, please continue to let us know what you
think (membersonly@wgbh.org).
We’re grateful to have you in our corner as we broaden and strengthen
classical music here in New England, and as we dig deeper into the issues
that matter!
Puccini’s Tragic Triangle
When it first debuted, Puccini’s Tosca was panned by the critics, and
decades later musicologist Joseph Kerman called it a “shabby little
shocker.” But today Tosca, a tragic tale of
love, murder and political intrigue, is one of
the world’s most popular operas. Great
Performances at the Met opens its fourth
season with a new production of Tosca,
staged by Luc Bondy in his Met debut, and
starring soprano Karita Mattila in her first
Met performance of the title role. James
The Original Gossip Girls
A sleepy 1840s English village comes to life with gossip, parties,
romances, sudden death, bankruptcy and the drama of an encroaching
railway in the three-part Cranford, based on the beloved Victorian-era
writings of Elizabeth Gaskell, who combines the romantic flair of Jane
Austen with the class consciousness of
Charles Dickens. The all-star cast includes
Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins (winner of a
2008 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding
Gambon and enough other top actors to
populate a picturesque hamlet. Look for
Alcott’s Double Life
Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women, had a reputation as a
morally upstanding New England spinster, reflecting the conventional
propriety of late 19th-century Concord, Mass.
An intellectual protégée of Emerson,
Hawthorne and Thoreau, Alcott was actually a
free thinker with democratic ideals and progressive
values about women. Most surprising
is that she led, under the pseudonym A.M.
Barnard, a literary double life, undiscovered
until the 1940s. As Barnard, Alcott penned
scandalous, sensational works with characters
running the gamut from murderers and revolutionaries
to cross-dressers and opium addicts.
impossibly thin and, above all else, sexy?
Researcher and author Rachel Simmons
examines the challenges facing young
women as they surf the waves of 21stcentury
adolescence. Simmons interviews
parents, psychologists, teachers and social workers and also talks with
four girls who tell their own personal tales of dealing with issues like
cyberbullying, body image and violence. With courage and determination,
these girls reveal their hopes and dreams for a powerful future.
Godmother of Punk
Shot over 11 years by acclaimed
fashion photographer Steven
Sebring, this film is a remarkable
plunge into the life, art, memories
and philosophical reflections of the
legendary rocker, poet and artist
Patti Smith. Sometimes dubbed
the “godmother of punk”—a designation
justified by clips of her early
rage-fueled performances—Smith
was much more than that when she broke through with her 1975
debut album, Horses. A poet and visual artist as well as a rocker, she
befriended and collaborated with some of the brightest lights of the
American counterculture, an often testosterone-driven scene to which
she brought a swagger and fierceness all her own.
Celebrating the Season with Brian O’Donovan
The holidays are here, and 89.7 WGBH is ready, with
an abundance of musical gifts to help you celebrate
the season. We’ve got something for everyone: A
Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols broadcast live
from King’s College on Christmas Eve, Ellen Kushner’s
The Golden Dreydl and PRI’s Kwanzaa celebration,
A Season’s Griot. Then, get ready to ring in the New
Year with NPR’s Toast of the Nation, which kicks off
in Boston’s Berklee Performance Center at 8pm with
jazz saxophone and clarinet sensation Anat Cohen.
Of course, it wouldn’t be December without
WGBH’s Brian O’Donovan (host of A Celtic Sojourn)
and his popular annual
A Christmas Celtic
Sojourn concert,
featuring a lively blend
of Celtic, pagan and
Christmas traditions.
This year’s concert
will be performed in
Boston, Worcester
and Providence, giving
you multiple opportunities
to experience this memorable and intimate
celebration of all things Celtic.
Looking to 2010, we’re pleased to announce a
new series of live concerts at our studios, the Guest
Street Sessions. The new series grows out of the
success of our Celtic Sessions—popular Friday night
gatherings organized by O’Donovan that bring
together Celtic musicians and fans. Look for jazz,
classical, world music, and news and public affairs
“Sessions” in the coming months.
AudioFile’s Jen Goebel recently caught up with
O’Donovan, the creative force behind as well as
in front of so many WGBH productions, to get the
scoop on Guest Street Sessions and the 2009 A
Christmas Celtic Sojourn concert.
QWhat are the new Guest Street Sessions?
A
We started doing Celtic Sessions as an
experiment last year, where I would invite a
group of Celtic musicians into the studios for
informal performances and casual conversation
with the audience. We started with Celtic because
I have those connections, and it was the easiest
way to test the idea. It has proven to be a huge
success.
Going forward, the Guest Street Sessions are
going to explore all genres of music, as well as the
arts and spoken word, in a way that really suits
the WGBH audience—casual, inviting, informative
and entertaining. Throughout the year, we’ll feature
classical, jazz, world music, Celtic, and news
and information.
QWhen are the Guest Street Sessions?
all going to be on Friday nights, with
A
They’re
a gathering at 6pm for a light reception,
and then going into the beautiful Fraser
Performance Studio at 7pm. In the studio, we’ll
have multiple groups from the genre, or different
news reporters and anchors if it’s a news and
information session, there to talk about their work
and have a conversation.
QWhere does the term “session” come
from?
A
The term “session” describes a casual
gathering of people to share ideas—often
musical ideas. A session is really just a period of
time where people play music, but it’s not necessarily
a pure performance—that’s the difference.
QWhat do you hope people will get out
of these sessions?
A
First of all, I hope that they’ll enjoy coming to
WGBH and getting to know us a little better.
One of the most exciting things about our move to
Brighton is the new public space—the theater,
the atrium and, of course, the Fraser Performance
Studio. With these unique gathering places, we
can offer WGBH members and listeners something
they can’t get anywhere else.
QYou wear many hats here at WGBH.
Among them, you pull together what
has become an annual tradition, the
A Christmas Celtic Sojourn concerts. How is
this year’s concert coming along?
A
It’s our seventh year. Hard to believe, but it is,
and we have a very exciting lineup this year
with artists coming from as far away as Sweden
and Edinburgh, as well as two coming from
Northern Ireland.
We have an amazing dancer joining dance
director Kieran Jordan this year, Nic Gareiss. He is
steeped not only in traditional Irish music but also
in the dances of Appalachia. The kids from the
Harney Academy of Irish Dance were a big hit last
year, and they will return this year. And we added
PALS chorus, a Brookline-based chorus of children
who provide the children’s chorus segments to the
Boston Symphony Orchestra and to Tanglewood.
They’re a highly prized chorus, and they will be
joining us on stage as well. I’m very excited about
that, actually. It’s a new twist for us.
analysis in Boston, providing valuable journalistic context from
diverse viewpoints that helps us all better understand the issues of
the day. “We’ll draw on resources right here in our Brighton studios,”
says John, “from radio’s The World and the Web’s Forum Network
to television’s Greater Boston, Frontline, Nova and American
Experience. We’ll also build on the strong foundation of independent
journalism and local flavor we’ve established with our Cape and
Islands NPR station, WCAI.”
You’ll still find your jazz and Celtic favorites on 89.7 WGBH,
alongside A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. However,
we’re taking folk and blues (genres available elsewhere on the
radio dial) off our air to make room for a broader focus on analysis
and perspective. We’re proud of the contributions 89.7 hosts
Naomi Arenberg, Brendan Hogan and Brad Paul have made to
these genres, and we’ll certainly miss their voices on 89.7.
As this issue of ’GBH, The Members’ Guide went to press, plans
for the new 89.7 WGBH were coming together. We’ll continue to
finetune our lineup in the days ahead to bring you the very best
on 89.7. For the most up-to-date information, please visit
wgbh.org/listen.
