Willkommen
to 2009’s
Oktoberfest!
Choctaw Oktoberfest 2009, the most authentic festival
of its kind in Oklahoma, is set for September
9 - 12 under the Festival Pavilion in beautiful
Choctaw Creek Park, located on Harper Street, 1/2
mile south of NE 23rd Street in Choctaw.
Sponsored by the City of Choctaw, the Choctaw
Chamber, Old Germany Restaurant and many
area businesses, the annual Oktoberfest celebration
has become a favorite destination for visitors
from a multi-state area seeking homemade
German food, genuine German beers and wine,
and German music.
As a result of continued growth and success, this
year's festival will feature more tent space, more
kitchens, more family activities and more parking!
The event will be staged under 30,000 square feet
of tents and a Festival Pavilion providing a real
German-Fest atmosphere.
The Turek family promises over 30 original
German Draught Beers and International Wines to
complement the menu of Schweinshaxen (ham
hocks), Grilled Chicken, Rippchen (smoked pork
chops), Apple Strudel and a variety of Bratwurst
and Schnitzel sandwiches, Red Cabbage,
Sauerkraut, German Potato Salad – all homemade
in the Old Germany Festival Kitchen!
The Stabbing of the Keg kickoff ceremony will
begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9,
featuring a very special guest winemaker from
Germany, Fritz Hasselbach, Lt. Governor Jari
Askins, The City of Choctaw Mayor Randy Ross
and Mike Turek, proprietor of Old Germany
Restaurant. Hasselbach has selected Choctaw
Oktoberfest to make the U.S. debut with his
newest wine creation “Fritz’s Riesling."
The largest festival of its kind in Central Oklahoma
promises continuous live entertainment for all
ages. The entertainment line up for this year presents
The Walburg Boys, The Alpen Musikanten,
Alpenfest and the Polka Kings, plus special
appearances by German Dance Groups.
Humble
Beginnings
The History Of
Old Germany
Restaurant
In August of 1974 the Turek Family immigrated to
the United States from a small town called Bad
Soden, Germany. They were very excited about
being in the U.S. and slowly but surely made the
best of their new home. Two days before
Christmas in 1975 the patriarch, Heinz Turek, was
laid off at the manufacturing plant where he had
been working. That was truly the most depressing
Christmas the Turek family ever experienced.
Doubts were beginning to arise about their move
to the U.S.
On March 1,1976 after working several odd jobs
to keep the family afloat, Heinz seized what
became the opportunity of his life. When leaving
Germany the family’s intent was to some day
open a German restaurant in Oklahoma. As it
turned out that dream started to materialize that
fateful March 1st. A small fast food establishment
became available for lease at SE 29th and Indian
Meridian in Choctaw. With $300 to their name, the
Tureks paid the $200 first month’s lease and
bought $100 worth of dishes and silverware. The
menu in that first year consisted of American fare
but for one exception, “Wiener Schnitzel”. Over
the next year and a half the menu changed to all
German cuisine. In 1978 a well-known local
columnist told the story of the little restaurant in
Choctaw, which really got the ball rolling for Old
Germany. In 1979 the Travel Holiday magazine
gave their “Fine Dining Award” to the restaurant.
Old Germany continued to receive the award for
ten years at which point the magazine discontinued
their award program. In 1986 The Wine
Spectator awarded Old Germany the Award of
Excellence for their outstanding International
Wine list and German Menu. Customers from all
over the country now seek out Old Germany, due
in part to this international recognition. “The rest”
as they say is history.
Continues page 6
Oktoberfest 2009 5
The original restaurant is now nestled between
two additions and seating has grown to 125.
Since 1991 Old Germany has hosted an
Oktoberfest that has grown from an inaugural
attendance of 1,200 to 50,000 people (Now located
at Choctaw Creek Park). Mike Turek (one of
three sons) hosts various events such as wine
tastings, wine dinners and Tours to Germany.
Christel, the matriarch, as well as Jutta (one of
three daughters), take pride in preparing your
meal only after you have placed your order. They
believe the combination of personal service and
your time provides for a truly pleasurable dining
experience.
“If you are pleased with Old Germany, tell
others, if not, tell us”, is the motto the
Tureks have lived by since they started over
25 years ago.
Schneider
Weisse
It is pleasantly spicy with a
typical top-fermented smell.
An aroma of clove and nutmeg
apple tantalizes the nose. On
the tongue it is fresh, clean,
full-bodied, harmonious and
well-balanced. It finishes
lightly sparkling with a light
and fine bitterness. 5.4% ABV.
Schneider
Edel Weiss
Weisen Edel-Weisse is a fine
quality hefeweizen that
delivers all of the style’s classic
attributes. That it’s certified
USDA organic is just an added
bonus. It is 6.2% ABV.
Spaten
Premium
In 1894, Spaten became the
first brewery in Munich to
produce this brand of light
lager. Golden in color with a
well balanced hop-flavor. The
full rounded body is a superb
balance between hops and a
malty sweetness.
It is 5.2% ABV.
Spaten
Oktoberfest
Spaten Oktoberfest Beer,
created in 1872, is the world's
first Oktoberfest beer. Spaten
Oktoberfest Beer is amber in
color. This medium bodied beer
has achieved its impeccable
taste by balancing the roasted
malt flavor with the perfect
amount of hops. It is 5.9% ABV.
Spaten
Optimator
In the dark and cold times
Spaten Optimator brings a
warm light. Spaten Optimator
is the classic German
bottom-fermented dark beer
“Doppel-Bock”. Spaten
Optimator is a full bodied
strong beer with a deep dark
color and rich roasted malt
flavor. It is 7.2% ABV.
Spaten
Munchen Dunkel
highlights. The smell is of
caramel/toffee with a touch of
of caramel/toffee/grainy malt.
It is sweet with an earthy
bitterness and hint of roast
balancing it out in the finish. It
has a smooth, almost silky,
medium body.
#13 #14 #15
Choc
Last Laugh
An American white ale, defined
by one of our brewers, Trae
Reese, the beer’s creator: Think
American unfiltered wheat beer
hit with a coriander hammer.
Flavor wise not unlike a Belgian
white beer minus the orange
but with WAY more coriander
and of course no Belgian yeast
character.
Choc
Spahnie 363
Our interpretation of Cologne’s
classic beer. German Pilsner
malt and German Perle hops
combined with a genuine Kolsh
yeast makes our version a malt
forward low hop refresher.
Unfiltered of course like our
other beers and naturally
carbonated by a secondary
fermentation in either the
bottle or the keg.
AYINGER
CELEBRATOR
DOBBELBOCK
Profoundly dark, rich elixir with
a complex fruitness of roasted
malt and whole hop flowers
with a semi-dry finish.
#17 #18
COOP
Zeppelin
German Wheat
Spicy wheat ale uses a blend of
Maris Otter, white wheat, and a
touch of rye malt.
COOP
Oktoberfest
Lager
A strong malt background and
a slight note of bittering hops
give this easy drinking lager its
signature character.
Erdinger
Hefe-Weizen
ERDINGER ‘Hefe-Weizen with
fine yeast’ is brewed according
to a traditional recipe and in
strict accordance with the
Bavarian Purity Law of 1516.
The beer is still
bottle-fermented in the
traditional way. Incomparable
flavor - the classic among
wheat beers! 5.3% ABV.
#20 #21 #22
Erdinger
Dunkel
ERDINGER Hefe-Weizen Dark
