ADD SEAM ALLOWANCE TO ALL TEMPLATES AND MEASUREMENTS.
Sewing Instructions
Section I:
Center medallion (finishes 30” x 36”)
Part 1
Templates A, B, & C
1. Cut oval, frame and ground, adding 1 /4" seam allowance.
2. Pin frame to oval at N, S, E, W folds, matching at
registration marks. Ease and pin entire oval every 1 /2".
Stitch.
3. Pin outside edge of frame to ground at N, S, E, W folds.
Ease and pin every 1 /2". Stitch.
4. Press both seams toward frame (Template B). Finished
blue rectangle should measure 30 1 /2” x 36 1 /2”, including
seam allowances. Make sure this is correct at this point.
8. Appliqué body over wings.
9. Appliqué butterflies in four corners.
Part 3
Leaves and Stems, Right and Left Sides
Templates E and F
10. Pin E in place on each side. Appliqué stems and upper
leaf, stopping short of the point of the leaf. Pin F in place
and appliqué, cutting away extra bulk underneath as
needed.
Part 4
Leaves and Stems, Top and Bottom
Templates G and H
11. Same as number 10 above, substituting G for E and
H for F.

5. Pin and appliqué 16 hearts around frame; edges are
touching. Pin hearts at N, S, E, W folds, then fit in the
other hearts between these.
Part 2
Butterflies
Templates I-M
6. Half of each butterfly is cut in reverse. Place Templates J
and M on fabrics so that motifs are “fussy cut” in mirror
image, so that wings appear symmetrical. Cut “eyes” on
butterfly wings from yellow flowers in 4854-2. (See closeup
of example.)
7. Appliqué J to K, then place under I, so as to appliqué
outer edges last.
Section II:
Border Number 1 (innermost border)
Top & bottom
4854-2 – Cut 2 strips 3” x 30” (3.5” x 30.5” includes seam
allowances).
Right & left sides
4854-2 – Cut 2 strips 3” x 36” (3.5” x 36.5” includes seam
allowances).
Corner squares
4859-1 – Cut (4) 3” squares (3.5” x 3.5” includes seam
allowances).
12. Join top and bottom strips to center medallion.
13. Join squares to ends of side strips. Stitch to right and left
sides.
