BELATRON high-efficiency charging systems:
Cutting-edge technology for your charging station
For more than three decades, the name BELATRON has stood
for advanced and future-oriented charging technology.
The new BELATRON high-efficiency charging systems are not
only distinguished by the latest components and attractive
housing, but also make an important contribution to climate
protection as a result of their excellent energy efficiency.
Compared with conventional chargers, BELATRON high-efficiency
charging systems reduce the amount of electrical energy
consumed during the charging process by 25 %.
This leads to reduced energy costs and lower CO 2 emissions
(see Fig. 1).
When charging a 48 V – 500 Ah traction battery using a
BELATRON high-efficiency charging system on 240 days a
year (single-shift operation), the annual saving on electrical
energy is approx. 1900 kWh compared with a conventional
charger.
When generating the electrical energy required for charging
the battery, 0.514 kg of CO 2 are released per kilowatt hour.
Every kilowatt hour saved reduces the CO 2 emissions and
therefore contributes to climate protection.
As a result of the energy saved, the CO 2 emissions are reduced
by 980 kg and are comparable with the CO 2 emissions
of a diesel-engined car (135 g CO 2 /km) travelling a distance of
7259 km.
This distance would be equivalent to a car journey to a place of
work 16 km away on 230 days a year (return journey 32 km).

BELATRON high-efficiency charging systems
increase battery life
Maximum possible charging power
with single-phase mains connection
Because of the excellent power factor of BELATRON high-efficiency
charging systems (cos φ ~1), the units can draw higher
power from the mains supply and, together with the excellent
efficiency, have higher DC power (charging power) when compared
with conventional chargers.
This is particularly important when a single-phase network is
involved, as BELATRON high-efficiency charging systems with
a charging power of 24 V – 120 A can still be connected to a
single-phase supply with a permissible mains current consumption
of 16 A.
Optimised ventilation concept
Particular importance has been placed on a new ventilation
concept in the development of the new housing. Air is now
fed in and discharged in a horizontal direction over the central
heat sink at the rear of the BELATRON high-efficiency
charging system only.
Electronic components are generally encapsulated and located
away from the main air flow in order to prevent corrosion
and/or contamination damage (see Fig. 2).
BELATRON high-efficiency charging systems are naturallyventilated
up to an output power of 1200 W (24 V – 50 A).
Fig. 2: Ventilation concept
Charging characteristics
BELATRON high-efficiency charging systems are suitable for
charging both wet-cell and maintenance-free batteries, as all
the relevant characteristics are stored in the charging electronics
memory.
Charging characteristics are controlled and are therefore independent
of mains voltage variations.
In the case of characteristics provided for wet-cell batteries,
particular attention has been paid to optimising the charging
factor. The battery is fully charged with effective acid mixing,
reduced gassing and the lowest possible electrical energy
consumption.
This results in lower water losses and therefore reduced
service costs. The life of the traction battery is also increased
due to the lower temperature rise during charging.
An optional electrolyte circulation system for wet-cell batteries
is available for intermediate charging and for particularly
short charging times.

BELATRON high-efficiency charging systems
economic thanks to maximum energy efficiency
Further advantages of BELATRON high-efficiency charging systems
1. Sinusoidal current consumption
and excellent power factor:
• Reduction of required mains power and therefore
investment and installation costs
• Reduction of peak current values and no increase in
the size of the reactive power compensator
2. Low ripple charging current:
• Minimises temperature rise during charging
• Increases traction battery life
• Reduces service costs (top-up intervals)
for battery maintenance
3. BELATRON high-efficiency charging
systems comply with the EMC limits
for domestic and industrial areas:
• BELATRON high-efficiency charging systems can
not only be used in industrial areas (as with many
competitors´ units) but also in business, domestic
and commercial areas
4. Charge state traffic lights:
• The battery charge state can be easily determined
from a distance thanks to large coloured indicator
lights (charge state traffic lights) (from housing size
WT60). In smaller units, LEDs provide continuous
indication of the current charging state.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
The EU Electromagnetic Compatibility Act (EMVG) states that
every item of electrical equipment placed into circulation,
including battery chargers, must comply with certain EMC
protection requirements, i.e. it must not cause disturbance to
any other item of equipment when in operation. Furthermore,
external interference acting on the charger must not have an
adverse effect on its operation.
In Germany, the Federal Network Agency is the market supervisory
authority responsible for ensuring compliance with this
legislation.
Fines of up to 50,000 € can be imposed for infringements
against the Electromagnetic Compatibility Act.
BELATRON high-efficiency charging units not only fulfil all
EMC requirements for the operation of the units in industrial
areas (as many competitors´ units), but also in domestic,
business and commercial areas, for which more stringent
EMC limits apply.
All EMC measurements are carried out by BENNING in the
company’s own EMC laboratory.
