LIVING MY
DREAM LIFE
amy mcgovern
NVP
Independent Consultant, National Vice President
Amy McGovern Nation; Missoula, MT
For a long time I was torn between living my actual life and living the life I
always dreamed of living — you know, the romanticized one in the movies,
novels, magazines, and of course, the life my parents wanted for me. Like
most people, I became fairly adept at jumping back and forth between
these lives of reality and fantasy. I stayed the course and did all the things
that were tracked out for me like going to college, dating clean-cut
boyfriends, getting married, working regular jobs, starting a family and
becoming an involved parent. Along the way, I managed to work in some
of my own less mainstream ideas of living a full life, which included traveling
to third world countries, participating in animal rescue missions,
maintaining a health-conscious vegetarian lifestyle, practicing Buddhism
and anything else I found enriching.
When I hit 34 years old, I finally decided that I needed to live my life the
way I saw fit. That is to say, my life should not be made up of compromises.
I needed to stop living the way I was supposed to and start living the
way I wanted to. So, I let go of a loveless marriage that really was not
good for anyone. I started parenting from the heart and in the best interests
of my children. I put aside my soulless jobs that were not even useful
for paying the bills, and began to construct the rocket that would carry me
through my actual life. I filled it with high-powered rocket fuel — my
Arbonne business — and began my journey to self-discovery and personal
independence. It has been a fast, sometimes turbulent, but ultimately wonderful
ride. My family has grown in numbers and in strength and I can say
the same for my business. My partner, Dean, is my co-pilot and together
we have charted our course into the future. There is so much more to do,
so many more goals to reach and so many people and causes to help.
My next conquests are things that are near and dear to my heart. The ethical
treatment of animals and a clean, healthy environment have always
been important to me. Dean and I have created a vegetarian household for
our five children. Most of the food we consume and the products we use
are organic, recycled, reused and never tested on animals. Before becoming
involved with Arbonne, I was confident that I was an educated consumer
making healthy choices for my family and voting with our dollars.
But after attending my first Arbonne Presentation in March 2003 at ERVP
Juli Nilson’s home, my eyes were opened. I realized that while I was doing
many things right, I had completely overlooked other unhealthy ingredients
found in our most commonplace household supplies, especially in our skin
care products.
For vegetarians and vegans, Arbonne is a perfect fit. I knew quickly
that Arbonne products were for my family and me. What a comfort
to use a product line from a company that does the homework for
you. I already know that I do not want to ingest animal products,
pesticides, herbicides and synthetic chemicals. I regularly do the
research to help reduce the toxins in the things we eat and the household
products we use. Once I learned about Arbonne, I asked
myself, “After all that care and expense, why would I want to rub
those same harmful ingredients on my skin?” The simplicity of this
logic hit me like a ton of bricks. After my eyes were opened and I
fell in love with every Arbonne product I tried, I thought about educating
others like myself. This is how my Arbonne career began.
Although I did not know it at the time, I had everything I needed to
make Arbonne a career. I had a lifestyle sustained by a personal
philosophy, a purpose inspired by the inhumane treatment of animals,
a passion fueled by the urgency to help others make healthy
and ethical choices, and an excellent product line that tied all of
these things together into a thriving enterprise.
Juli’s Arbonne Presentation had me spellbound. After attending, I
found myself thinking about Arbonne constantly and talking with
anyone and everyone about the products and philosophy. As a new
Arbonne Independent Consultant, I created a Presentation that was
filled with my personal revelations about what I and so many others
were unwittingly doing to our bodies. Then, I told them about the
Arbonne alternatives. My Presentations focused on education and
the sales followed. Somewhere during my third week as an Arbonne
Independent Consultant, I received a phone call from ENVP Julie
Lackner. She told me that I was very close to making it to first-step
success strategy:
qualification for District Manager. While it was nice to hear, this was
not one of my original goals and therefore I paid little attention to it.
My motivation was not to reach management or have an Arbonne
career. My reason for sharing Arbonne centered on living well and
teaching others how to do so also. This quickly changed the following
month when I promoted to District Manager. At that point, I was
hooked on the business.
Like most Vice Presidents that I read about in Eye on Arbonne stories,
I made my share of mistakes along the way. Missteps are
inevitable but necessary and become terrific learning experiences.
My biggest blunder was stepping away from my business when my
personal life became shaky. In retrospect, my time would have been
much better spent focused on personal success rather than licking my
wounds and being mired in negative thoughts of fear, regret and
worry. I realize now that investing in oneself during those challenging
times ultimately leads to inner peace and fulfillment.
I re-started my business after putting it down for seven months. While
I was away, the Arbonne community grew. I knew I needed to take
up my place again, grow with the company and help the team that
I had created. I began strongly supporting and building my team up
again. I focused intently on their success and we established an
unbreakable bond. I am most satisfied with my growth as a leader
and my team’s willingness to replicate this wonderful business.
There are so many reasons to be grateful in this business. I greatly
appreciate the opportunity that Arbonne affords me to be part of the
solution to environmental degradation, unhealthy choices, and
unethical treatment of animals. I am also grateful to have experienced
the chance to build a team of strong, independent and diverse
women and men who have the courage to pursue their dreams while
they are awake. Together, we are living the lives we have always
dreamed of living and not the lives we were supposed to live. The
individuals in my Nation are constantly teaching me something every
day. I wish to thank them all, from the Managers who skillfully cultivate
the potential in themselves and others to the Arbonne Independent
Consultants who believe in themselves and this product line.
To my Regional Vice Presidents, Savannah Eberline, Betsy Dahlberg
and Michaela Hubbard: I am constantly amazed by the great vision
and perseverance of your vision, leadership and dreams. All three
of you inspire those around you and have been the foundation on
which our Nation was built upon.
To my direct upline, ERVP Juli Nilson and ENVP Julie Lackner: You
are my stalwart and steady supporters. Your vision has changed the
lives of countless families across the country. Thank you for making
me and my family beneficiaries of your kindness and wisdom. To
ENVPs Rachel Sinclair and Deanna Herrin: My goal was to follow in
your footsteps. There is no greater gift in this profession than working
with people you admire and love. The opportunity to learn from
both of you is wonderful and motivating.
EDM Lisa Laber, EDM Alecia Goff, AM Heidi Wallace and Amy
To my parents, Bill and Sarah Towle: I am indebted to you both for
providing me with the most powerful examples of hope, integrity, love
and compassion. You are the most generous and loving people I
know. You both have provided me with a solid foundation of family
support and encouragement. The fruits that Arbonne provides would
not be as sweet without having you to share them with.
To my partner in life, Dean McGovern: Together we have created a
wonderful family and now this successful business. When the seeds of
my Nation were first planted, your love, encouragement, support and
wisdom helped nourish them. To our sweet children, Peyton, River,
Margot, Kingsley and Harrison: You are the light of our lives whose
radiance nourishes us and illuminates the goodness in everything. This
is all for you.
