Dell Computer Continues to Assist
University with AC Adapter Recall
In October 2004, Dell Computer issued a
recall on an AC adapter that poses a potential
fire or electrical shock risk. Dell provided a
report (Excel format) to assist in identifying
the units purchased by the University that are
potentially affected by the recall. The report
lists the Purchase Order number, ship date,
product description, service tag and delivery
address of the equipment. The link to the
Excel file is located at:
http://www.purchasing.uconn.edu.
Please check the report for units purchased
by your department
and follow
the instructions
on the websites
below to determine
if the
adapter on the
identified units
should be
replaced. A link
is also included
to the website that will guide you through the
replacement process.
The following systems are affected:
✔
Latitude CP, CPi, CPiA, CPtC, CPiR,
CPxH, CPtV, CS, CSx, CPxJ, CPtS,
C500, C510, C600, C610, C800,
C810, V700, C-Dock, C-Port
✔ Precision M40
✔ Inspiron 2500, 2600, 3700, 3800,
4000, 4100, 4150, 5000, 5000e, 7500,
7550, 8000, 8100, Advanced Port
Replicator, Docking Station
The adapters were shipped to customers
between September 1998 and February 2002.
The words "DELL," and either "P/N 9364U",
"P/N 7832D", or "P/N 4983D" are printed on
the back of the adapters. For more information
about this recall, see:
http://www.delladapterprogram.com/.
At this time, the only method for obtaining
the replacement part is by using the tool at
the following link.
https://www.delladapterprogram.com/multiorder.aspx.
This is a FREE process to obtain a
replacement adapter and have it shipped
directly to you. Return shipping will be
included for your affected part.
UITS and the Purchasing Department are
also working with Dell to determine any alternative
ways of obtaining replacement
adapters.
A FAQ sheet is posted at:
University to Utilize State Contracting Portal
The University will be posting all publicly advertised bids on the Department of Administrative
Services (DAS) website. Purchasing Department staff will be trained by DAS to facilitate this
change. The change is being effected in response to Governor Jodi Rell’s Executive Order 3, dated
December 15, 2004. The complete text of the Governor’s order can be found at
http://www.ct.gov/governorrell/cwp/view.asp?A=1719&Q=287552
While bids will continue to be posted on the Purchasing website, the portal will provide
increased exposure, encourage broader vendor participation and engage more suppliers in the
University’s procurement process.
New Items Available
from Central Stores
Central Stores adds new items on a frequent basis. These
additions in most cases occur in response to requests from
customers. The printed catalog is
out of date before you get it. Our
online catalog has all the items in
it, but who has time to browse
through it looking for new items?
While all the new items are too
numerous to list, here is a small
sample.
We have added many safety
items to our stock including Tyvek
coveralls in sizes small to xxxl.
These items can be accessed in our
online catalog using tyvek in the
description field.
Unger has a line of high access tools. We have added several
of those including poles, bulb changers, cleaning brushes
and dusters. These items can be accessed online using Unger
in the Mfg Nbr field.
We have also added to our stock of Flo-Tech remanufactured
printer cartridges. The newest additions are cartridges
compatible with HP LaserJet 4300, 4200 and 1300 series
printers. These items can be found by placing flo-tech in the
Mfg Nbr field.
We will be stocking a new ceiling panel system for use in
areas with water leaks. It is a temporary
fix that redirects the water. The system
comes as either a 2’ x 2’ or 2’ x 4’ panel
complete with hose, clips and ties. If there
is anyone interested in a video showing
how the system works, we can get one.
While we respond to additions suggested
by customers, we also appreciate
information that would help us to reduce
excess stock. If we are stocking a particular
item for you, please let us know if
you will be making changes that would
reduce or eliminate the need for Central
Stores to stock that item.
We want to work together with you to provide an economical
supply for your needs.
How Do I Configure My Non-Standard Dell Computer?
Guidelines for Ordering Non-Standard Dell Computers
When generating a quote for a Dimension or Inspiron to be
used for research or special teaching, the Dell.com Higher
Education site can be used to configure your system:
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/segmenter?c=us&cs=RC956904&l=en&s=hied
Follow the link for Higher Education Institutions, then link to
the appropriate category:
Desktops & Workstations or Notebooks & Mobile
Workstations. The e-quote you save on the Higher Ed site can
then be sent to Purchasing to be re-created by the University’s
Dell rep for order placement.
Although Dell’s on-site engineering support provided to
Husky PC owners is not available for non-standard configurations,
you will be entitled to the extended support available to
higher education customers. The re-created quote ensures that
you are eligible for this expanded technical support, which is
not available to Home/Office or Business customers.
Why can’t a quote from the Dell
Home/Office or Business site be used?
Following are some of the primary reasons:
❑ Technically, purchases from the Home/Office or
Business sites aren't available to higher education customers,
because this is not our market.
Conversely, benefits available to UConn as a higher
education customer and under our contract with Dell,
cannot be applied to purchases from the Home/Office
or Business sites for the same reason.
❑ Quantities are often limited and may not be available
when the order is placed.
❑ Offers are available for a limited time and may have
expired before an order is placed.
❑ Although free shipping may be offered on some specials,
it is usually additional. All UConn orders have
standard shipping included.
❑ Rebates offered as part of special deals cannot be sent
to individual University staff. They would be payable
to the University, as the equipment would be purchased
with University funds.
Although some offers on these other sites are doubtlessly
good deals for their markets, the programs for higher education
have been developed for the unique needs of our institutions.
Our Dell rep is available to answer any additional
questions you might have regarding this: Linda Boucher can
be reached by e-mail at Linda_Boucher@Dell.com.
