The two-colour „NAVIFLEX“ lamp is a newly patented design 

offering the following advantages: It can be set and completely 

retracted again by foot-actuation when not in use thus saving 

space and no longer obstructing the deck, when not required.

ideally suited for mounting in the bow of small boats. Contact is 

automatically made when the mast is inserted. When the lamp is not being 

used, the contact opening can be covered using the integrated rubber

50,000 hours of SERVICE LIFE 

The service life of NAVILED position lamps is revolutionary: More than 50,000 operating 

hours minimum service life – the equivalent of every night at sea for 17 years. This 

long service life cannot be shaken by anything, and you save around 

100 bulb replacements per lamp. No matter whether you are at the polar circle or 

in the tropics, and no matter what kind of waves and swells unsettle the boat. 

ELECTRICAL ENERGY IS IN SHORT SUPPLY 

Yachts are being fitted with more and more electronics – all current consumers. Thank 

goodness you can save electricity with the lights at least. Power consumption is reduced significantly 

with every NAVILED lamp you use in comparison with conventional lamps. The 

extremely low consumption makes a perceptible difference for your power reserves 

on board, too. 

THE ELEGANCE OF FUNCTION 

NAVILED revolutionises on-board style. Lamp designs for ships have never 

had their finger on the pulse of time like this before. 

CONVINCING SAFETY 

NAVILED position lamps are made for conditions at sea. There are no contacts to be corroded 

by seawater and there’s no need to replace bulbs under difficult conditions: The absolute 

vibration-resistance and 100% watertightness of the lamps guarantee perfect 

lighting on your boat in all conditions. 

UNIQUE TECHNOLOGY COMBINES COB AND FREE-FORM 

For the first time in navigational lighting, NAVILED combines COB and free-form technology 

into a completely new concept. 

COB-LEDs are based on a connection between a conductive substrate and any number of 

LED chips by means of DIE-bonding and on the production of electrical connections 

through a wire-bonder. 

In free-form reflector technology the light image is not generated by the cover lens 

but by a reflector which has been calculated using thousands of light points. This means the 

lens is pattern-free, underlining the clear, transparent design of the NAVILED lamps.

The international Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IMO 72 COLREGS) form the international basis for 

legal lighting on vessels with overall lengths of < 20 m. However supplementary national regulations entailing

Hella Marine Deck Lamp Systems 

Everything about our shining examples of modern light technology is explained below from search light with practical 

two-in-one technology to deck lamps matched to the contour of the boat, or lamps with state-of-the-art xenon 

technology: 

The paraboloid lamp 

The paraboloid lamp is the classic amongst the lamp systems 

in use today; it uses a parabollic reflector. The light source is 

located at its focal point. The reflector captures the light, 

bundles and radiates it. The lens ensures that the light is 

distributed as required, directing it to pre-specified areas in 

front of the lamp. Effective paraboloid lamps have a large 

reflector in order to capture a great deal of light. The lens must 

be as vertical as possible in order to ensure good light 

refraction. Reflectors with a long focal length provide good 

long-range illumination; those with short focal lengths collect 

more light and provide good short-range illumination. 

The FF lamp 

The FF lamp represents a quantum leap in lamp technology. Its 

reflector surface no longer corresponds to an even paraboloid. 

More than this, each point of the reflector surface has an 

exactly defined function: to collect light, concentrate, direct and 

distribute it. The reflector alone generates the desired light 

distribution. The entire light output of an FF lamp (FF stands for 

free-form) is comprised of more than 50,000 spots of light. The 

entire reflector is effective in Hella Marine free-form deck lamps. 

The FF lamp takes the light exactly to where it is supposed to 

be. The result: brighter, more even illumination of the deck, 

greater range, hardly any scatter loss or dazzling. In order to 

calculate the reflector surface of an FF lamp, extremely 

powerful electronic computers and high-precision tools and 

production machines are required. Fractions of a thousandth of 

a millimetre alter the effectiveness of the entire system.

Xenon technology - The new standard for deck lamps 

Xenon technology represents the present peak in lamp system 

development. The advantage of xenon lamps in comparison 

with halogen lamps lies in their light flux, which is 2.5 times 

higher (with 35% lower energy consumption). This leads to very 

high luminance and therefore brighter and wider illumination of 

the deck. The colour of the light is similar to that of daylight. A 

considerable increase in comfort and active safety. The 

triumphant march of this new light is unstoppable. Whilst only 

expensive luxury cars were equipped with xenon light a few 

years ago, this technology is now also available in Hella Marine 

deck lamps. 

What is xenon light really? 

Instead of a coiled filament, a light arc is the light source in 

xenon lamps. The bulb, which is only the size of a cherry stone, 

is filled with xenon gas and metal salts. In order to ignite the 

xenon bulb, an extremely high voltage of approximately 20,000 

volts is required. This is provided by an electronic ballast: 12 or 

24 volt direct current is transformed into 20,000 volt alternating 

current. A light arc is created at temperatures of around 5000° 

C. With a power consumption of a mere 35 watts, this 

generates 2.5 times the light flux of a halogen bulb with 35 W 

output. The current generation of control units is only half the 

size of, and approximately one third lighter than, the first and 

second generation. The ignition electronics can now be 

completely integrated into the control unit. As a result of these 

control units, the lamp’s light is almost independent of voltage 

fluctuations in the ship’s electrical system, as the electronics 

operate the xenon bulbs at constant output.

This halogen lamps series is obtainable in two colours 

and excellent for recess mounting on motor boats. 

The new type reflector uses a 10 W bulb, for 

example, to provide the light output usually provided 

by a 20 W bulb. Bulb with rating up to 20 W can be 

used. Bulbs can be changed from the rear. The lamp 

is also provided with a silicon seal preventing any 

possible vibration of the lens. Simple to mount with 

2 spring clips.

switch installation and user friendly. Surface or recess

Circuit Breaker Module 

With the growing trend for boats to fit more and more electronics, especially in 

smaller powerboats, the need arose for a simple device for isolating a second 

battery and electronics from harmful engine starting spikes. The VSR (Voltage 

Sensitive Relay) makes this possible, while allowing two or more batteries to be 

charges at the same time. The relay stays open when the engine is first started 

and remains open during charging until the battery has reached a preset 

voltage (13.7 V). The relay then closes, allowing the two batteries to be charged 

together. When the engine is stopped, the voltage returns to normal levels, 

which allows the relay to open again, separating the two batteries, eliminating 

the possibility of discharging the wrong battery.

28 V Halogen Bulbs 

28 V Halogen bulbs have solved the problem 

of premature failure of 24 V halogen bulbs in 

24 V electrical systems. Due to the battery 

charging voltage, the voltage in the electrical 

system increases to approx. 28 V while in 

operation or connected to mains. This affects 

24 V halogen bulbs in two ways: 

● drastic reduction of service life 

● significant lamp overheating

What does IP degree of protection mean? 

The IP degrees of protection are determined by DIN 40050 part 9. IP stands for International Protection. The 

purpose of the standard is to exactly lay down the protection of electrical equipment against penetration by solid
