The Family of God
South Central Conference of Seventh-day Adventists
66 th Camp Meeting ~ June 1-9, 2012
Oakwood University Campus, Huntsville, AL
Welcome
CAMP MEETING 2012
Dana C. Edmond
President
On behalf of Executive Secretary - Elder Auldwin T. Humphrey, Treasurer - Mrs.
Merkita Mosley, the office staff, 200 workers of this storied and special conference,
Mrs. Edmond and I welcome you to Camp Meeting 2012.
Our theme for Camp Meeting is “The Family of God,” with emphasis on the family.
We are so excited and blessed that God has diversified our family of workers
in the past three years to include the first female officer, the first female Pastors
(also, the first black female Pastors in the history of the Southern Union), the first
Caucasian Pastor, the first Korean Pastor, and the first Haitian Pastor in the history
of our conference.
Auldwin Humphrey
Executive Secretary
We shall never deny our roots nor our heritage. We are an historically African-
American conference. The work among black Seventh-day Adventist began here.
My grandmother, Mrs. Nancy Edmond, participated in the work in Vicksburg,
Mississippi. That is who we are.
But that is not all of who we are. We are part of a world church which includes
the entire family of God, “every nation, kindred, tongue and people.” Our doors
are open to whomever wishes to join us. We believe that the more multicultural
our staff becomes, the more diverse people we can reach for the kingdom of God.
To underline our commitment to diversity, and in recognition of the fact that we
are a part of the worldwide family of God, we are pleased and honored to have as
our first Sabbath speaker, Dr. Ted Wilson, President of the General Conference of
Seventh-day Adventist.
Merkita Mosley
Treasurer
The families of our church are under attack. But we are buoyed by the knowledge
that while the enemy of our families is mighty, the Friend of our families is AL-
MIGHTY!
Please pray for our families and while you are praying, please do not allow a single
day to pass without praying for Mrs. Edmond and for me.
Blessings On You and Yours,
Elder D. C. Edmond, President
GUEST SPEAKERS
FIRST SABBATH
Divine Worship Speaker
Dr. Ted Wilson
President
General Conference SDA,
Silver Spring, MD
Our first Sabbath speaker,
Dr. Ted N.C. Wilson, was elected as president
of the Seventh-day Adventist world church
in July 2010 during the General Conference
Session in Atlanta, Georgia. Born in Takoma
Park, Maryland on May 10, 1950, the son of
former General Conference President Neal C.
Wilson and Elinor E. Wilson spent part of his
childhood in Egypt.
Pastor Wilson began his church career as a
4 n 2012 South Central Conference 66th Camp Meeting
GUEST SPEAKERS - continued
pastor in 1974 in the Greater New York Conference.
He married Nancy Louise Vollmer Wilson,
a physical therapist, in 1975. The couple
has three daughters—Emilie Louise, married
to Pastor Kameron DeVasher; Elizabeth Esther,
married to Pastor David Wright; and Catherine
Anne, married to Dr. Robert Renck—and five
wonderful grandchildren.
Pastor Wilson served as an assistant director
and then director of Metropolitan Ministries
in New York from 1976 to 1981. He went on to
serve in the church’s then Africa-Indian Ocean
Division, based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, until
1990. There he served as a departmental director
and later as executive secretary.
Following his post in West Africa, he served
for two years at the church’s world headquarters
in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States,
as an associate secretary. He went on to accept
the position of president of the church’s Euro-
Asia Division in Moscow, Russia, which he held
from 1992 to 1996. Pastor Wilson returned to
the United States to serve as president of the
Review and Herald Publishing Association in
Hagerstown, Maryland, until his election as a
General Conference vice president in 2000.
An ordained minister, Pastor Wilson holds
a doctoral degree in religious education from
New York University, a master of divinity degree
from Andrews University, and a master
of science degree in public health from Loma
Linda University’s School of Public Health. In
addition to English, he speaks French and some
Russian.
SECOND SABBATH
Divine Worship Speaker
Pastor Bron Jacobs
Kansas Avenue SDA
Church,
Riverside CA
Pastor Bron Vincent Jacobs
is our second Sabbath
speaker. He was born in Rochester, New York
to Ennis and Ruth Jacobs. While New York was
his place of birth, Tallahassee, FL, would be his
permanent resident. He graduated from Oakwood
College in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts
in Theology. After graduation, he was extended
a call to serve the South Atlantic Conference as
assistant pastor of the Berean SDA Church in
Atlanta, GA, under senior pastor Elder William
L. Winston.
Bron completed his Masters of Divinity degree
in December of 2004 after which he was
assigned to serve as the pastor of the Bethel Seventh
day Adventist Church in Asheville, NC.
Later he was called to serve the Bethany Seventh
day Adventist Church in Macon, Georgia. Perhaps
the most significant occurrence of Jacobs
ministry in Macon was meeting and marrying
his current wife, Dr. Ashley Maycock Jacobs,
who was a physical therapy student at Andrews
University.
In December of 2009 Pastor Jacobs was extended
a call to serve as the senior pastor of the
Kansas Avenue Seventh day Adventist Church
in Riverside, California, where he and his wife
now currently reside. At the conclusion of 2011
and a Spirit filled fall evangelism series, God
blessed Kansas Avenue to add 99 precious souls
to their church family.
In summarizing the privilege and sacred responsibility
of the call to serve as a minister of
the gospel, Pastor Jacobs humbly submits, “It is
a great privilege to preach the grace of God for
the redemption of man; it is a greater privilege
for the preacher to be personally redeemed by
that grace. This is the true miracle for the gospel
worker.”
-Elder D. C. Edmond
2012 South Central Conference 66th Camp Meeting n 5
GUEST SPEAKERS - continued
Elder Joseph W. McCoy
Our Sunday Mid-Day Service
speaker is Elder Joseph W. McCoy,
the Executive Director of the Regional
Conference Retirement Plan.
Elder McCoy began his ministry in
this conference, in Paducah, Kentucky, in 1967.
After additional pastorates in this conference, in
Mississippi and Kentucky, he accepted a call to the
South Atlantic Conference, and subsequently, the
Southwest Region.
It was from there, that the late C.E. Dudley, called
him to serve as the Director of Youth Ministries
of our conference. From there, he was elected as
the Conference Executive Secretary. In 1993, he
was elected as the President of the South Central
Conference, where he served for 12 years.
It was toward the end of his service as President,
that the Lord laid upon him the desire to address
the inadequacies of the compensation that
Seventh-day Adventist workers received upon
their retirement. From that burden, the Regional
Conference Retirement Plan was birthed, where
retired workers now receive compensation that allows
them to retire in dignity.
He is married to the former Judith Bryant, of Los
Angeles California. Their 46 year union has produced
3 daughters and 3 grandchildren.
We look forward to a word from the Lord as spoken
through a former President of our conference.
Dr. Jessie L. Wilson
Our Sunday evening speaker is
Dr. Jessie L. Wilson, an Associate
Professor in the Department of Religion
and Theology at Oakwood
University.
Dr. Wilson is a native of this conference, from
Memphis, Tennessee. He began ministry in this
conference and served as a Pastor in Tennessee
and Alabama, prior to accepting a call to pastor in
the Southeastern California Conference. For much
of that time, he served as the Senior Pastor for the
Riverside Kansas Avenue SDA Church.
church growth and the Lord has blessed him to be
in demand across the United States and beyond.
He and his wife, Cheri, are the parents of four children.
We welcome him to the Campmeeting pulpit
of the South Central Conference
ORDINATION SPEAKER
Elder Robert L. Willis
Pastor Robert L. Willis is a former
worker in the South Central Conference.
Elder Willis was born in Brooklyn,
New York, the son of a Seventh-day
Adventist minister. He graduated from what was then
Oakwood College and began his ministry in the old
Allegheny Conference in 1960.
For the next 36 years, he pastored in the Allegheny
West, Allegheny East, Lake Region and South Central
Conferences. He was called twice to the South Central
Conference: first to the Memphis Longview Heights
SDA Church from 1970-1976, where for several years
the Lord blessed him to baptize over 100 souls; and
then to the Huntsville First SDA Church, where he
successfully pastored for 10 years before retiring in
1996.
In addition to his service as a Pastor, he also served
as Associate Ministerial Director in the Southern
Union.
His first love has always been pastoral ministry,
evangelism and the mentorship of young pastors.
Among the pastors in whom he took a special interest,
in their youth, were men such as Dr. G. Russell Seay
and Dr. Jessie L. Wilson, who both currently serve as
Professors in the Theology Department of Oakwood
University and Elder D. C. Edmond, who currently
serves as President of the South Central Conference.
Elder Willis has been married to his wife Betty for
61 years. They are the parents of four daughters.n
Pastor Nathan D. Williams
Jesus Christ is the Way & Cleveland First SDA
Churches, Indianola & Cleveland, MS
Pastor Nathan D. Williams is a
native of Long Island, NY, and
the firstborn son of Joseph
and Alethia Williams. In 1989, his parents
migrated to Atlanta, GA, and it
was there that he met his lovely wife,
Yolanda Parker. They are the proud
parents of three beautiful children:
Gabriel-16, Hannah-10, and Caleb-9.
Because of his parents’ commitment to Adventist Christian education, Pastor
Williams attended Bethesda Elementary, Pine Forge Academy (class of 1990) and
Oakwood University. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in
Management from Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA.
After completing his studies at Georgia State University, Pastor Williams
worked for the Citizens Trust Bank in Atlanta. However, it was while working as
a commercial truck driver that he began to heed the voice of the Lord in terms of
his calling to pastoral ministry. After attending the General Conference Session of
Seventh-day Adventists in 2005, he and his wife began to pray earnestly for God’s
ministerial direction. Joining them in prayer were the late Pastor Fred Parker, Sr.
and former South Atlantic Conference President Ralph P. Peay.
In May of 2006, Pastor Williams entered the Seventh-day Adventist Theological
Seminary at Andrews University. While there he was blessed to serve under the
leadership and mentorship of Dr. Norman Knight and Pastor J.D. Parker. Andrews
University provided Pastor Williams with an opportunity to see the Seventh-day
Adventist church abroad when he visited the campuses of Newbold College in
England and Friedensau Adventist University in Germany. In December of 2008,
he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Andrews University.
On March 29, 2009, Pastor Williams received a call from South Central
Conference inviting him to join them on a soul winning mission in the Mississippi
Delta. He began pastoral ministry in the Cleveland - Indianola, MS district, where
27 souls were baptized or recommitted to Christ. While serving in this district, he
oversaw church renovation projects and community outreach programs such as
health fairs, free car washes, coat drives, financial and marriage seminars. He is a
member of the Bolivar County Ministerial Association, the Bolivar Medical Center
Pastoral Care Team, and serves as a board member on both the Helping Hands
Community Action Group and the Bolivar County Women’s Resource Center. It is
Pastor Williams’ sincere desire to see Jesus’ face in peace and to lead his first congregation,
which is his family, into the kingdom of heaven.n
Camp Meeting 2013
May 31 - June 8
First Sabbath - Pastor MyRon Pelote Edmonds
Pastor Edmonds was born to Pastor & Mrs. Ronald Edmonds in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He
attended Seventh-day Adventist elementary schools in New Jersey and Washington
DC. And graduated from Pine Forge Academy in 1995.
Pastor Edmonds responded to the call to the gospel ministry while a student
at Oakwood College, in Huntsville, Alabama through the inspiration of
a conversation with the late Dr. E.E. Cleveland. He graduated from Oakwood
College (now Oakwood University) in 1999 with a B.A. in Theology and continued
his academic growth at Andrews University completing his Masters
of Divinity in 2001. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Ministry Degree
from Andrews Theological Seminary with a concentration in Family Ministries. His dissertation
research deals with the role and absence of African-American men as Spiritual Leaders.
Pastor Edmonds is happily married to his high school sweetheart, Dr. Shanee’ Arthurs of
Cleveland, OH. She is a practicing dentist. They are the parents of 9 year old daughter, Teylor
and a 7 year old son, Camden.
His pastoral experience began with distinction within the South Central Conference, as the
associate pastor to Pastor Benjamin Jones of the historic First SDA Church of Huntsville, AL.
Later called to the 3 church district of Franklin, Shelbyville and Murfreesboro, TN. Followed by
pastoring innovatively and exceptionally for 6 years the Oakland Park SDA Church of Murfreesboro,
TN. Currently, Pastor Edmonds is the Senior Pastor of the historic and growing Glenville
SDA Church in Cleveland, Ohio.
Pastor Edmonds’ is passionate about preaching and leading people to Jesus Christ. His motto
in life is Matt 6:33. “But seek first the kingdom of heaven, and His righteousness, and all these
things shall be added unto you.”
Second Sabbath - Elder Kenneth Manders
Pastor Kenneth L. Manders served the Bermuda Mission (now Conference) as a literature
evangelist from 1980-1984. He furthered his academic pursuits in the gospel
ministry at Oakwood College from 1988-1992 and graduated with a
B.A. in Theology. While at Oakwood College (now University), he was
awarded the Mosley/Warren Homiletical and Preaching Award for the
class of 1992.
Pastor Manders received a call to serve as the associate pastor of the
South Hampton Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1995. He was also assigned
to serve as the Youth Director for the Bermuda Conference for six years. In 1997 he
was assigned to the Somerset Seventh-day Adventist Church where the Lord blessed in soul
winning for five years.
Pastor Manders presently serves as the Executive Secretary for Bermuda Conference and
senior pastor for the Hamilton Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Shirley P. Scott, Director
GREETINGS!
“I’m so glad I’m a part of the Family of
God. I’ve been washed in the fountain;
and cleansed by His blood. I’m joint heirs
with Jesus as we travel this side, and part
of the family, ‘The Family of God.’”
The Family of God—what a wonderful
family it is! South Central Conference
women are so excited about our family
that we want everyone to be a part
of it. That’s why we are partnering with
the Ministerial Department this year.
Personal evangelism has been defined as
“one person effectively communicating
the person and message of Jesus Christ to
another.” In his book, Sharing Jesus in a
Changing Culture, Will McRaney espouses
that if the kingdom of God is to expand,
individual Christians will have to learn to
communicate their faith in a way that is
engaging, personal, and relevant.
Women’s Role in the Family of God.
Research indicates that women rate higher
when it comes to religion and spiritual
interest and activities. As women vary in
age, stages of life, education, background,
and experience, so do their needs. In personal
evangelism, women are a powerful
force for the kingdom of God. However,
in order to be effective, it is important that
we learn not only the needs of women,
but how to reach them for God. Although
we were made for this exciting work, networking
with other women through Bible
studies, prayer and support groups, we
must learn how all of these yield souls for
the kingdom.
Visitation is one of the areas in which
Ellen White urges women to become involved
in the book Evangelism. She counsels
that although women have a natural
gift for doing evangelistic visitation, training
will enhance and strengthen their
skills as well as teach them how to avoid
pitfalls. Women need to be wanted, to
belong, to improve their lives, to be better
parents, to receive encouragement,
emotional support, and to have purpose
and fulfillment, according to research by
Connie Cavanaugh. Visitation gives us
the opportunity to help meet their needs
and reclaim these women as members of
the family of God.
Extra special thanks to Elder Benjamin
Jones, Ministerial Secretary, for his openness
to allowing the Women’s Ministries
Department to partner with him in this
vital training.
It is our prayer and expectation that as
we women, empowered by the Holy Spirit,
take our place joining in proclaiming the
good news through personal evangelism
and redemptive visitation, many souls will
be added to the family of God.n
What’s NEW and Exciting this Year!
1. Charming Challenge and Uniquely His will be directed by Carolyn Florence. Carolyn Rice Florence’s Elegant
Behavior provides an opportunity to cultivate awareness by teaching manners and etiquette with a
specific way of showing consideration for others with respect to all cultural situations. She coaches social
interaction skills and nurtures behavioral responsibility. Refinement is the polish that makes us shine to
God’s honor and glory.
2. Sunday evening, June 3, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. in the “Tween Tent,” our “Tweens will participate in “Taking
a Stand,” an anti-bullying campaign targeted for children 5th - 8th Grade. They will learn what they can do
to stop friends from bullying, what to do if they are bullied, and how to stop themselves from being a bully.
3. Je’Zonn Clermont, creator of Tiny Tunes Ministries, will be the featured guest presenter during the week
for the “Tween Tent.” Tiny Tunes Ministry is a combination of Je’ s love of music
with the humanities for children 2 to 10. Je’ uses his
God given gifts and couples them with God’s word to
create a high energy ministry that is both powerful in
reaching children and leading them to Christ.
Je’ resides in Laurel, MD, and is the producer/arranger
of the very popular CD, God’s Treasure Box. If you ever
hear children singing the very popular arrangement of
“He’s My Rock, My Sword, My Shield,” then you’ll begin to understand Je’s commitment
to children.
will literally take shape as young women. In a fun and exciting hands on environment, the
awkward sting of properly making introductions, using table manners, developing personal
hygiene habits, and increasing self-confidence will be interactively explored as children enhance
true politeness and consideration for others. [5th - 6th Grade only].
