<strong>Arts</strong>, <strong>Media</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Communication</strong><br />

<strong>Career</strong> <strong>Pathway</strong><br />

<strong>Career</strong>s in this pathway of study are related to careers working with people as well as the<br />

performing, visual, literary <strong>and</strong> media arts. These may include creative or technical writing,<br />

illustrating, graphic designing, publishing, theater arts, journalism, education, languages,<br />

photography, advertising <strong>and</strong> public relations.<br />

fields, then narrow<br />

down your choices<br />

until you find the<br />

right career for you.<br />

<strong>Communication</strong><br />

Our <strong>Communication</strong> courses are designed to<br />

help students succeed in college, career, <strong>and</strong><br />

interpersonal relationships. The department<br />

offers various courses in interpersonal, group,<br />

organizational, intercultural, <strong>and</strong> public<br />

communication, as well as argumentation,<br />

rhetoric, <strong>and</strong> debate.<br />

The ability to communicate effectively is often<br />

cited as the number-one skill for<br />

career advancement in all professions.<br />

The U.S. Department of Labor states<br />

that the most important qualities<br />

for high job performance include<br />

listening, speaking, creative thinking,<br />

decision making, problem solving,<br />

reasoning, self-esteem, sociability, self<br />

management, integrity, <strong>and</strong> honesty.<br />

All these are skills can be developed<br />

in the <strong>Communication</strong> major or<br />

certificate program.<br />

Enrolling in <strong>Communication</strong><br />

classes also opens up new career<br />

opportunities. <strong>Career</strong> fields related<br />

to <strong>Communication</strong> include teaching,<br />

sales, human relations, real estate,<br />

customer service, social services,<br />

management, public relations,<br />

advertising, media, fund raising, law,<br />

politics, <strong>and</strong> publishing. The U.S.<br />

Department of Labor claims that at<br />

least ten of these 14 career paths will<br />

be the biggest generators of new jobs<br />

over the next 10 years.<br />

Digital <strong>Arts</strong><br />

The program is designed to prepare students for<br />

entry level positions in various graphic art fields<br />

such as advertising, graphic design, illustration,<br />

<strong>and</strong> digital imaging. The core learned disciplines<br />

are the principles of design, an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of<br />

the visual elements, exposure to art <strong>and</strong> design<br />

history, conceptual visual problem solving,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the production of a graphic portfolio using<br />

established computer graphic software.<br />

Journalism<br />

Students completing the <strong>Bakersfield</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

journalism program can be assured they will<br />

move to the next level of education with the<br />

knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills needed to make a seamless<br />

transition. The staff has been instrumental in<br />

helping students attain scholarships, attend<br />

pertinent conferences, compete in competitions

against other community colleges, <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><br />

the professional environment of journalism.<br />

The program offers courses designed to train<br />

students in several areas, such as reporting,<br />

photojournalism, page design <strong>and</strong> more. Students<br />

also have an opportunity to work on one of the<br />

top community college newspapers in the state,<br />

the Renegade Rip, which was awarded general<br />

excellence in the state for 2004-05 <strong>and</strong> has a<br />

proud 76-year tradition.<br />

The program offers six classes, including<br />

two – <strong>Media</strong> <strong>and</strong> Society, <strong>and</strong> Beginning<br />

Reporting – that satisfy lower division<br />

requirements at most four-year institutions.<br />

BC also offers a Press Photography class <strong>and</strong><br />

three sections in the student newspaper – one<br />

for reporters, one for photographers <strong>and</strong> one for<br />

editors.<br />

Photography<br />

The Photography area offers classes in both<br />

traditional wet lab <strong>and</strong> digital photography.<br />

In the wet lab courses students are exposed<br />

to processing <strong>and</strong> printing black <strong>and</strong> white<br />

materials, as well as the history of the medium.<br />

Advanced students use alternative photographic<br />

processes <strong>and</strong> produce portfolios in an area of<br />

personal interest.<br />

The digital courses offer an overview of Adobe<br />

Photoshop, as well as strategies for using digital<br />

cameras, color management, printing <strong>and</strong> digital<br />

asset management.<br />

TECH PREP Program<br />

The <strong>Bakersfield</strong> <strong>College</strong> TECH PREP Program is an integral part of <strong>Career</strong> <strong>and</strong> Technical<br />

Education <strong>and</strong> encourages high school students to continue technical training <strong>and</strong> education<br />

at the college level by offering college credit for high school articulated courses.<br />

Tech Prep provides a smooth transition from high school to a certificate, associate<br />

degree or transfer at the community college by eliminating duplication of coursework.<br />

<strong>Bakersfield</strong> <strong>College</strong> will award credit-by-exam college credit to students who have<br />

completed <strong>and</strong> met the competency requirements of an articulated course, are currently<br />

registered <strong>and</strong> in good st<strong>and</strong>ing at the college, <strong>and</strong> only for the course listed in the<br />
