Arts, Media and Communication
Career Pathway
Careers in this pathway of study are related to careers working with people as well as the
performing, visual, literary and media arts. These may include creative or technical writing,
illustrating, graphic designing, publishing, theater arts, journalism, education, languages,
photography, advertising and public relations.

Communication
Our Communication courses are designed to
help students succeed in college, career, and
interpersonal relationships. The department
offers various courses in interpersonal, group,
organizational, intercultural, and public
communication, as well as argumentation,
rhetoric, and debate.
The ability to communicate effectively is often
cited as the number-one skill for
career advancement in all professions.
The U.S. Department of Labor states
that the most important qualities
for high job performance include
listening, speaking, creative thinking,
decision making, problem solving,
reasoning, self-esteem, sociability, self
management, integrity, and honesty.
All these are skills can be developed
in the Communication major or
certificate program.
Enrolling in Communication
classes also opens up new career
opportunities. Career fields related
to Communication include teaching,
sales, human relations, real estate,
customer service, social services,
management, public relations,
advertising, media, fund raising, law,
politics, and publishing. The U.S.
Department of Labor claims that at
least ten of these 14 career paths will
be the biggest generators of new jobs
over the next 10 years.
Digital Arts
The program is designed to prepare students for
entry level positions in various graphic art fields
such as advertising, graphic design, illustration,
and digital imaging. The core learned disciplines
are the principles of design, an understanding of
the visual elements, exposure to art and design
history, conceptual visual problem solving,
and the production of a graphic portfolio using
established computer graphic software.
Journalism
Students completing the Bakersfield College
journalism program can be assured they will
move to the next level of education with the
knowledge and skills needed to make a seamless
transition. The staff has been instrumental in
helping students attain scholarships, attend
pertinent conferences, compete in competitions

against other community colleges, and understand
the professional environment of journalism.
The program offers courses designed to train
students in several areas, such as reporting,
photojournalism, page design and more. Students
also have an opportunity to work on one of the
top community college newspapers in the state,
the Renegade Rip, which was awarded general
excellence in the state for 2004-05 and has a
proud 76-year tradition.
The program offers six classes, including
two – Media and Society, and Beginning
Reporting – that satisfy lower division
requirements at most four-year institutions.
BC also offers a Press Photography class and
three sections in the student newspaper – one
for reporters, one for photographers and one for
editors.
Photography
The Photography area offers classes in both
traditional wet lab and digital photography.
In the wet lab courses students are exposed
to processing and printing black and white
materials, as well as the history of the medium.
Advanced students use alternative photographic
processes and produce portfolios in an area of
personal interest.
The digital courses offer an overview of Adobe
Photoshop, as well as strategies for using digital
cameras, color management, printing and digital
asset management.

TECH PREP Program
The Bakersfield College TECH PREP Program is an integral part of Career and Technical
Education and encourages high school students to continue technical training and education
at the college level by offering college credit for high school articulated courses.
Tech Prep provides a smooth transition from high school to a certificate, associate
degree or transfer at the community college by eliminating duplication of coursework.
Bakersfield College will award credit-by-exam college credit to students who have
completed and met the competency requirements of an articulated course, are currently
registered and in good standing at the college, and only for the course listed in the
college catalog. Bakersfield College currently has Articulation Agreements with high
