Issues and Aspects of Deafness<br />

Implications of laws pertaining to<br />
educational choices and rights of deaf<br />
and hearing impaired individuals. Local,<br />
state, and national organizations,<br />
activities, and agencies affecting the deaf<br />
community. Prerequisites: SLG102,<br />
SLG103 with a “C” or better, or<br />
permission of department/division.<br />

American Sign Language III<br />

Linguistics of American Sign Language<br />
(A.S.L.) including non-manual behaviors<br />
and signing English idioms with<br />
conceptual accuracy. Emphasis on<br />
practical application of A.S.L. skills,<br />
expanded vocabulary, and cross-cultural<br />
communication. Prerequisites: SLG102,<br />
with a grade of "C" or better, or<br />
permission of department/division.<br />
Suggested but not required: (ENG101 or<br />
ENG107) and (CRE101 or CRE111 or<br />
exemption by score on the reading<br />

skills including continued vocabulary.<br />
Emphasis on conversational techniques<br />
in a cross-cultural framework. Continued<br />
work on conceptual accurate signing of<br />
English idioms and words with multiple<br />
meanings. Prerequisites: SLG103 and<br />
SLG201 with a grade of "C" or better, or<br />
permission of department/division.<br />

classifiers, use of space, and grammatical<br />

(ASL). Includes evaluation of changes<br />
that occur in ASL as a living language.<br />
Advanced use of ASL in demonstrations,<br />
reports, and presentations.<br />

Comparative Linguistics: ASL/English<br />

A variety of topics about linguistics of<br />
American Sign Language and English<br />
including phonology, morphology,<br />
lexicon, syntax, discourse, and language<br />
acquisition. Aspects of using sign<br />
language and how visual languages<br />
differ and are similar to spoken<br />
language. Prerequisites: SLG202.<br />

Introduction to Interpreting<br />

Theories of role, function,<br />
responsibilities, and communication<br />
strategies of the American Sign<br />
Language (ASL)/English interpreter.<br />
Covers application and implementation<br />
of the National Registry of Interpreters<br />
for the Deaf (R.I.D.) Code of Ethics.<br />
Additional topics addressed include<br />
interpreters functioning as advocates,<br />
moral systems vs. ethical systems,<br />
standard business practices, and<br />
perceptions of consumers.<br />
Prerequisites: SLG201 with a grade of<br />
"C" or better, or permission of<br />
department/division.<br />

Deaf Culture<br />
3 credits 3 periods lecture<br />
(Spring only)<br />
Linguistic, social, educational, and<br />
political issues in deaf culture. Values<br />
and group identity issues as related to<br />
heritage and literature. Special emphasis<br />
on the cultural and philosophical<br />
attitudes shared with other minority<br />
groups. Prerequisites: SLG202 or<br />
permission of department/division.<br />

Sign to Voice<br />
3 credits 3 periods lecture<br />
Interpreting sign language into spoken<br />
English. Includes expanding spoken<br />
vocabulary and improving technical<br />
skills. Additional hours outside regular<br />
classroom schedule required.<br />
Prerequisites: SLG2<strong>06</strong> with a grade of<br />
"B" or better, or permission of<br />

Educational Interpreting<br />

(Evening only)<br />
Direct application of interpreting in the<br />
classroom. Experience with the<br />
interpreting process and decision<br />
making through role-playing.<br />
Presentations and use of initialized signs<br />
with conceptual accuracy. Emphasis on<br />
self monitoring and feedback skills.<br />
Includes required student observations<br />
of educational interpreting outside of<br />
class. Prerequisites: SLG200 and SLG201<br />
with a grade of "C" or better, or<br />
