PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS<br />

This portion of <strong>the</strong> NETWORKING section contains information on <strong>the</strong> major professional<br />

affiliations that are available to <strong>the</strong> <strong>municipal</strong> <strong>secretary</strong> in Pennsylvania. Primarily, membership is a<br />

vehicle to network with o<strong>the</strong>r persons in similar positions. In addition to providing <strong>the</strong> <strong>secretary</strong> with<br />

opportunities to exchange information about <strong>the</strong>ir problems and experiences, <strong>the</strong>se affiliations offer a<br />

permanent resource center to call upon for assistance. Some of <strong>the</strong> organizations= dues entitle<br />

members to receive publications (some free, some at reduced rates) which contain useful articles and<br />

advertisements or enable <strong>the</strong> member to purchase exclusive reading material produced by that<br />

organization.<br />

Municipal secretaries choose to become active participants within <strong>the</strong> various affiliations for<br />

a variety of reasons. Among <strong>the</strong>m:<br />

! bringing recognition and advancement to <strong>the</strong> profession,<br />

! encouraging <strong>the</strong> scholarship and certification programs offered through <strong>the</strong> affiliation,<br />

and<br />

! associating and networking with <strong>the</strong> competent individuals who form <strong>the</strong> affiliation=s<br />

officers and staff.<br />

Membership can be a pre-requisite to becoming certified through that particular organization,<br />

although many members choose not to achieve certification. While certification is not, at this time,<br />

required for <strong>the</strong> <strong>municipal</strong> <strong>secretary</strong> in Pennsylvania, it is thought to add to <strong>the</strong> professionalization of<br />

<strong>the</strong> office. The various certification programs are outlined in THE MUNICIPAL SECRETARY=S<br />

DESKTOP REFERENCE MANUAL=S section on TRAINING.<br />
