C. WORKERS= COMPENSATION<br />

Intended to provide workers with replacement income during a job related illness or injury.<br />

1. Mandatory Coverage<br />

a. Coverage A - Covers <strong>municipal</strong> employees injured or killed on <strong>the</strong> job<br />

b. Coverage B - Provides coverage for legal costs of employer to defend in suit resulting<br />

from injury or death of employee ($100,000 coverage)<br />

c. Does not cover volunteers except for six categories:<br />

i. Volunteer fire department<br />

ii.<br />

iii.<br />

iv.<br />

Volunteer ambulance/rescue squad<br />

Fire police<br />

Park guard<br />

v. Waterway patrol<br />

vi.<br />

Forest fire fighters<br />

2. Act 477 (Heart and Lung)<br />

a. Optional coverage to purchase<br />

b. Covers paid police, firefighters and park guards injured on <strong>the</strong> job.<br />

c. Pays difference from workers compensation and full salary. (Act 477 requires full<br />

salary to this category of worker injured on <strong>the</strong> job).<br />

d. Good idea if large number of covered workers and <strong>the</strong>re is some experience with<br />

injury to this class of worker.<br />

D. UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION<br />

1. Contributory type - <strong>municipal</strong>ity pays fixed amount to state. State pays claims.<br />

2. Reimbursement type - <strong>municipal</strong>ity pays only for claims made against it. (Should have<br />

reserve set aside for <strong>the</strong>se payments?)<br />

3. In all cases, state determines eligibility and benefits.<br />
