Takes place <strong>the</strong> first Monday in January:<br />

RE-ORGANIZATION MEETING<br />

* Boroughs-even numbered years only<br />

* First class townships-even numbered years only<br />

* Second class townships-each year<br />

Note: If <strong>the</strong> first Monday is a legal holiday, meeting is held <strong>the</strong> following day.<br />

Before meeting begins, all newly-elected <strong>municipal</strong> officials shall take <strong>the</strong> oath of office<br />

before a person having authority to administer oaths. This oath is to be filed with <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>secretary</strong>:<br />

* Boroughs-no limitations set in code<br />

* First class townships-within 10 days of taking <strong>the</strong> oath<br />

* Second class townships-before assuming <strong>the</strong> duties of office<br />

Board organizes under a temporary president/chairman (in a borough, that person is <strong>the</strong><br />

mayor), recorded by a temporary <strong>secretary</strong>. After a president/chairman is elected by majority<br />

of <strong>the</strong> board members present, he/she conducts <strong>the</strong> remaining business:<br />

* elect a vice-president/vice-chairman<br />

* appoint a <strong>secretary</strong> (and assistant <strong>secretary</strong> if desired) and treasurer (boroughs and<br />

second class townships). Establish <strong>the</strong>ir compensation (if in a second class<br />

township this person is an elected official, <strong>the</strong> board of auditors fixes <strong>the</strong><br />

compensation). In addition, second class township boards must set amount for<br />

treasurer=s bond.<br />

NOTE: Borough <strong>secretary</strong> and/or treasurer cannot be a council member. First class township<br />

<strong>secretary</strong> cannot be a commissioner. If ordinance creating position of manager exists, manager is<br />

appointed.<br />

* appoint a street commissioner (boroughs only) or roadmaster (second class<br />

townships only)<br />
