INTRODUCTION
On may 20 th - 21 st- , 2008 the second annual
“Gathering Wisdom” forum convened at the Coast
Plaza Hotel in Vancouver, BC. The annual forum has
become an important opportunity for First Nations
leadership and health professionals, as well as their
provincial and federal counterparts, to discuss the
significant progress made in the implementation of
the 29 action areas of the Tripartite First Nations
Health Plan. As well, participants were invited to
continue the conversation on First Nations health
that was initiated at the 1st Annual Forum, to
share ideas and experiences, to provide feedback
on the work that has taken place so far, and to
solicit suggestions for additional items to be taken
into consideration as work continues to refine and
implement the Tripartite First Nations Health Plan.
This second annual forum also offered participants
working for First Nations the opportunity
to participate in professional development
workshops focused on physical activity, personal
nutrition, traditional medicine, cultural inclusion
and youth engagement. Overall the forum sought
to celebrate and re-energize current efforts, to
provide new tools to be taken home to First
Nations communities, and to inspire new ideas for
improving the health of First Nations people in BC.
