Initially the Revells of Shropshire formed a small section of Part 5 dealing with Yorkshire and dealt only with those Revells who
migrated from Bradfield to Shifnal. When it became clear that there was at least one other well-established group of Revells in
Shropshire, and that these were established before the better-known group arrived from Bradfield, the decision was taken to give
them their own chapter.
The Revells of Shifnal
Thomas Revell of Stannington and Shifnal
As discussed in Part 5, Pedigree MS 170 and Pedigree 171 indicate that a Thomas Revell of Stannington moved to Shifnal in
Shropshire at some imprecisely defined date. This Thomas, baptised at Bradfield on September 26 th 1582 was the son of
Richard Revell of Stannington and Margaret Revell, who is though to be the daughter of a William Revell — see Part 5.
Thomas Revell and his parents were recorded as recusants at Bradfield in 1604. 1
In 1613 Paver’s Marriage Licences records that a licence was issued for Thomas Revell of Ecclesfield to marry Ann Wilson of
Bradfield at either place. 2 They married at Bradfield (within Ecclesfield parish) on November 16 th 1613. 3 On April 13 th 1615
Richard Revell of Stannington surrendered his messuage lands in the Manor of Sheffield to Thomas Revell his son and heir
and Christopher Wilson of Bromehead, Thomas’s father-in-law. 4 Anne Wilson was baptised at Bradfield on April 15 th 1593 and
was a beneficiary in her father’s will, dated July 12 th 1622. 5
Despite the statements in Pedigrees MS 170 and Pedigree 171 it has not been possible to obtain unequivocal proof that Thomas
did move to Shifnal, and the only other reference located so far that makes this claim cites the will of a Humphry Brammall
(Anne Revell née Wilson’s grandfather), 6 and this will has not been located. However, the absence of burial records at
Bradfield for this Thomas Revell and his wife Anne Revell, suggest that they did indeed move away. There are at least four and
possibly six Memorial Inscriptions at Shifnal that relate to the Revells, 7 two of which relate to grandchildren (see below) but it
has not been possible to access details of the others. 8 There is a record in 1646 / 7 of an Ann Revell in connection with the
Manor of Stanton Lacy in Shropshire who might be Anne Revell née Wilson, but could possibly be a daughter, discussed below.
The name Revell does not appear in The Visitation of Shropshire dated 1623, and baptism records at Bradfield indicate that this
9, 10
move to Shifnal probably did not occur before late 1624 at the earliest. Also, a Thomas Revell of Stannington, yeoman,
recorded as a recusant in late 1632 seems likely to be this individual. 11 Thomas and Anne’s son Edward Revell seems still to be
in Yorkshire in 1638 and it is possible that his siblings were baptised at Bradfield as late as 1636. 12 The earliest record of a
Revell in the Shifnal area of Shropshire so far located refers to an Ann Revell in 1646 / 7, but it is not clear whether this is
Thomas’s wife or putative daughter. The earliest unequivocal record is to their son Edward Revell at some date in the period
1650 to 1655.
Little more is known with regard to Thomas and Shifnal, but a Thomas Revell son of Richard who is referred to in the wills of
John Revell of Smallfield (1620) and Thomas Revell of Brampton) 1640 is almost certainly this individual. Their connections
to him are obscure but might be through Thomas Revell’s wife Margaret Revell son of William Revell — see table 55.
In contrast, the Thomas Revell living in 1644, referred to in the will of Rowland Revell who married Elizabeth Percy, is much
more likely to be Thomas Revell of Ricketfield. This interpretation is supported by the parish records at Bradfield that do not
record the baptism of a Rowland Revell son of Richard Revell, but do show a Rowland Revell baptised 1602 son of William
Revell of Ricketfield. 13 This mis-interpretation has led to claims in pedigrees 170 and 171 that Rowland Revell who married
Elizabeth Percy is a brother of Thomas Revell of Shifnal and Stannington.
Thomas Revell of Stannington and Thomas Revell of Ricketfield (baptised October 15 th 1595, son of William Revell) are
contemporaries and both had children baptised at Bradfield in the same period. 14 In the period 1615 to 1636 Bradfield parish
registers record the baptism of 13 children (eight daughters and five sons) to a Thomas Revell, but it is clear from the dates
(baptisms in July and November 1622, December 1628 and April 1629, and January 1632 / 3 and August 1633) that there were
at least two Thomas Revells fathering children in that period. Because the baptism records do not name the mothers, and
because the date of Thomas Revell of Ricketfield’s marriage is not known, it is impossible to identify from these registers
which Thomas is the father of any particular child.
The children of Thomas Revell of Stannington and Shifnal
Pedigrees MS 170 and Pedigree 171 both show that Thomas and Ann had four sons, Edward Revell, Rowland Revell, Thomas
Revell (possibly of Wadsley) and William Revell, presumably born in the period ca 1614 to ca 1634, and plausibly at Bradfield.
No daughters are shown in either pedigree. As explained above, Rowland Revell does not belong to this Thomas.
The thirteen relevant baptisms, father Thomas Revell, in the Bradfield registers are : 15
• Rosimonde, daughter of Thomas Revell, bapt 19 Apr 1615.
• Edward, sonn of Thomas Revell, bap 17 Aug 1617, ano prd.
• Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Revell, bap 27 Feb 1619.
• Dorothie, daughter of Thomas Revell, bap 21 Jul 1622.
• Anne, daughter of Thomas Revell, bap 6 Nov 1622.
• Thomas, sonn of Thomas Revell, bapt 25 Apr 1624.
• Mary, daughter of Thomas Revell, bapt 16 Apr 1626.
• Edward, son of Thomas Revell, bapt 27 Dec 1628.
• Thomas, son of Thomas Revell, bapt 5 Apr 1629.
• Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Revell, bapt 16 Jan 1630.
• Sara, daughter of Thomas Revell, bapt 12 Jan 1632.
• William, son of Thomas Revell, bapt 11 Aug 1633.
• Doritie, daughter of Thomas Revell, bapt 25 Sep 1636.
There is no direct evidence to enable any of these to be associated unequivocally with a particular father. However, the absence
of any corresponding burial records in the period 1615 to 1629 suggests that were a forename is duplicated in the list (Edward,
Thomas, Dorithy, Elizabeth) it indicates that both fathers had a child of that name, and that neither father had more than nine
children baptised at Bradfield.
On the basis of records of Revells in and around Shifnal in which the forename can be matched to the baptisms at Bradfield, it is
plausible that at least four, possibly five, of these children belonged to Thomas Revell of Stannington.
Rosamund Revell 1615–1690, daughter of Thomas of Stannington
Thomas Revell and Anne are the parents of a Rosimonde Revell (baptised Bradfield April 22 nd 1615) because she is explicitly
described as a sister of Edward Revell in a document dated 1647. 16 In addition she can be associated with Shifnal and several
other towns in Shropshire, and is consistently recorded as a spinster. Rosamund Revell of Shifnal purchased the advowson of
the rectory of Stirchley from the Leicesters in 1669, giving her the right to put forward a candidate as rector. The advowson
descended through the family until, in 1827, it came to Hugo and Revell Moreton Phillips. 17
above property to Edward Revell as attorney for 2’.
Shropshire Archives have an associated record dated 1670 described as follows: 20
‘Letters patent: exemplification of a Recovery William Revell, gentleman, plaintiff Rosamund Revell, deforciant (Thomas
Widnall, attorney)’ and
‘Thomas Brooke esq., vouchee (John Smythier, attorney) Edmund Clent, vouchee 3 messuages, 3 gardens, 120 a. land, 30 a.
William Revell is plausibly Rosamund Revell’s brother. Rosamund Revel also purchased Whixall manor in 1673. 21
is some 15 miles north of Shrewsbury and about 22 miles north from Shifnal. Rosimonde Revell died in 1690. 22
Whixall
Anne Revell 1622–1646–?, putative daughter of Thomas of Stannington
Much less well documented than Rosamund. In 1646 / 7 the Calendar of the Committee for Compounding records that an Ann
Revell and Wm Dormer bought ‘Also houses, &c., in Stanton Lacy Manor, co. Salop’. 23 Plausibly this is Anne Revell, daughter
of Thomas Revell, baptised at Bradfield on November 6 th 1622, but conceivably it could be Thomas’s wife or widow.
Dorothy Revell, putative daughter of Thomas of Stannington
There are no records other than the two baptisms at Bradfield. It is not clear which Dorithy belongs to Thomas of Stannington.
Thomas Revell, putative son of Thomas of Stannington
Alumni Cantabrigiensis records a Thomas Revell of Salop who matriculated Sizar from Corpus Christi in 1653. 24 He is
plausibly a son of Thomas Revell of Stannington, either the individual baptised at Bradfield on April 25 th 1624 or the
individual baptised there on April 5 th 1629. Note that Pedigree 171 questions whether this might be ‘Thomas of Waddsley’ but
that seems rather unlikely in the light of this record in Salop. Thomas Revell of Wadsley is discussed further in the section
below and in Part 5. Thomas Revell of Salop is possibly the father of Edward Revell’s niece and / or nephew discussed below.
William Revell, 1633–1670–?, putative son of Thomas of Stannington
In August 1656 a William Revell, cutler, of Barrow is named in an indemnity bond to cover the maintenance of him and his
family. Barrow is some seven miles west of Shifnal. 25 He is plausibly the William Revell baptised at Bradfield on August 11 th
1633, and mentioned in association with Rosamund in 1670. 26 He is possibly the father of Edward Revell’s niece and / or
nephew discussed below.
Edward Revell 1617–1694, son of Thomas of Stannington
Pedigree 171 indicates that Thomas and Anne’s eldest son was Edward Revell (presumably the Edward Revell baptised at
Bradfield on August 17 th 1617). The earliest account of him is an unreferenced transaction recorded in Familiae Minorum
Gentium associated with Pedigree 171, as follows ‘John Wainwright of ? Jowet House, co. York, Yeo., George W., son & heirapparent,
and Alice, mother of the said John, surrender Walter's House, etc., to the use of Edward Revel, son of Thomas R. of
Shiffnal, co. Salop, Gent.’. It is unfortunate that the original cannot be consulted to check that ‘of Shifnal’ is indeed stated.
Nevertheless, it indicates that son Edward Revell was still associated with Yorkshire in 1638.
This Edward might be the Edward Revell, Captain of Horse, in Sir Richard Leveson’s Regiment, listed among the ‘Indigent
Officers of County Salop’ in 1661 / 2, 27 and it is presumably the same person referred to as ‘Captain Revell of Shifnal’ at some
date in the period 1650 to 1655. 28 Sir Richard Leveson supported the Royalist cause and had peoprty at lilleshall, Shropshire
which fell to Parliamentary forces in 1645.
The next reference to a Revell in Shifnal is to an Edward Revell who had bought one third of the manor of Wrockwardine in
1665, 29 and was still holding it in 1674, but there are no Revell records in the Wrockwardine parish registers. 30 ‘Revell’s Rough’,
31 that is to be found on the OS Map at SJ 755 071 about a half-mile east of Shifnal railway station, is presumably associated
with the family. In 1659 an Edward Revell is named as a defendant in an equity pleading at Admaston, some nine miles northwest
of Shifnall, 32
Edward Revell of Shifnall, in his will that was apparently executed on June 26 th 1684, 33 bequeathed £1000 to Lisbon College
and £1000 to Douai College, creating the Revell's Fund, and he also left £100 ‘for a priest in Shropshire for a weekly Mass’. 34
However, this reference to the execution of the will must be to its writing because this Edward Revell is named in an equity
pleading concerned with Wrockwardine Manor in 1686, 35 and in a deed dated December 30 th 1690:
‘Deed of Edward Revell of Shifnal, Salop, in pursuance of his right to nominate students to Douai and Lisbon Colleges, -
devises power of nomination after his decease to John Talbot of Longford Co. Salop and Thos. Giffard, Chillington, Co. Staffs.
Signed and sealed. Witnesses Jo. Purcell; Will Turner. C0130 30 Dec 1690’. 36
On July 11 th 1690 it is recorded that the disaffected papists in the Brimstrey hundred were ‘Edward Revell of Shifnall, gent. and
his nephew ––– Revell…’. 37 The failure to mention any sons suggests that there were none. The precise identity of this nephew
is unclear, but his father would presumably be one of the following children baptised at Bradfield
The parish register for White Ladies records the burial by an Order of Sessions dated January 15 th 1694 / 5 that Edward Revell
38, 39, 40
of Shifnal, gent. ‘was buryed in Septemb., 1694 in linnen, and ye Forfeiture pd. to Donnington parish’.
This is the only Revell record at either Donnington or White Ladies. Donnington is some five miles north-west of Shifnal and
some six miles east of Wrockwardine. White Ladies Priory is some six miles east of Shifnal.
The Inheritance Disputes Index contains three entries dated 1694–5 regarding the estate of an Edward Revell of Shifnal and
parties by the name of Smith and Llewellin, respectively, 41 but it is not clear whether these parties are related. There are also
disputes in 1686 between Smith and Revell with regard to the estate of Joan Laud (C7/304/760).
With regard to Revell’s Fund there is a record that ‘Thomas, son of Ronald Revell, of Revell Grange, Stannington, Yorkshire,
yeoman, was admitted to Lisbon College, admitted on Revells Fund ; alumnus March 31, 1697, ordained priest’. 42
The identity of these two Revells is uncertain — it has not been possible to find any records of a Ronald Revell. Thomas
Revell, son of Richard Revell, baptised at Bradfield on January 31 st 1676 / 7 is one possibility and he might be connected to the
Rowland Revell of Stannington yeoman, and / or Thomas Revell of Stannington, yeoman, recorded as recusants in 1715, 43
but their connection, if any, to the Revells of Shifnal is not known.
Thomas Revell of Wadsley
This section is included because Pedigree 171 questions whether Thomas Revell the son of Thomas Revell of Stannington and
Shifnal might be ‘Thomas of Waddsley’. The ancestry of the Revells of Wadsley is obscure, but it seems unlikely that the
pedigree is correct.
A deed of covenant dated March 20 th 1607 / 8 made between ‘Thomas Creswicke of Burrow Lee within the parish of Ecclesfield
in the county of York yoman and Elizabeth his wife of the one part and Richard Revel of Stannington in the said cy of York
yonmn and Henrye Worrall thelder of Ughill in the said county of York yoman of thother part…’ refers to land in Wadsley and
Owlerton, and is witnessed by a John Revell of Dongworth. 44 The Feet of Fines for Easter Term 1608 has an entry that
obviously relates to the same event, ‘Rich. Revell and Henry Worrall, quer : Thos. Creswicke and Eliz. his wife, def. Two
messuages, 2 cottages and lands in Waddesley and Ollerton’. 45
In the late 16 th century there are clear records of three Richard Revells.
Richard Revell of Walkley, who married Dorothy Worrall, was dead no later than 1597 and can be eliminated. Dorothy Revell
née Worrall married second Thomas Creswick and was buried at Sheffield on June 13 th 1602. Thomas Crewisck married
again, possibly to Elizabeth Parkin at Sheffield on June 23 rd 1605 or to Elizabeth Scofield at Penistone on October 20 th 1607 and
is likely the individual named in the deed in 1607 / 8.
Richard Revell of Heley was buried in 1610 but has no obvious connection. Therefore it seems likely that Richard Revell of
Stannington is Richard son of Gregory, and father of Thomas Revell associated with Shifnal.
John Revell is mentioned also in 1611 ‘John Revell and Matthew Webster, quer: Peter Mathyman, def. Messuage and lands in
Waddesley and Ollerton’. 46
Wadsley is not mentioned again until a Gregory Revell, yeoman, of Waddesley is referred to in a mortgage dated June 21 st
1648. 47 Gregory Revell was presumably born no later than 1628. Gregory Revell and a Thomas Revell are the plaintiffs in an
equity pleading at Wadsley in 1651, defendants Elizabeth Grey and Durant Alsop. 48
On May 19 th 1654 a Thomas Revell, yeoman, of Waddsley agrees to abide with an arbitration relating to the same property
referred to in the earlier mortgage, as follows: ‘Thomas Revell, yeoman, of Waddsley, to Thomas Bradwell the elder, yeoman, of
Bradwell, in £100, to abide by the decision of Rowland Eyre of Hassoppe and Robert Eyre of Highlowe, arbitrators appointed to
decide a dispute concerning the possession of lands in Bradwell and to deliver up the deeds of title, etc.’. 49
It seems likely that this is the ‘Thomas Revell of Wadsley, yeo.,’ whose will, according to Pedigree 171, is dated July 20 th 1666
and states that he is to be buried at Ecclesfield, near his wife, and refers to his son and heir Gregory Revell, his daughters
Elizabeth Revell, Mary Revell and Ann Revell, and a sister Ann Balguy. Ann Balguy’s identity is uncertain — she might be a
sister-in-law. A Gregory Revell listed in the 1672 West Riding Hearth Tax, 50 is possibly the heir of Thomas of Wadsley. The
relevant Ecclesfield parish registers are not accessible electronically.
It is impossible to judge whether the Gregory Revell named in the 1648 mortgage is the father of Thomas, or the son of Thomas
whose will is dated 1666. If Gregory Revell is the son, then his father Thomas Revell was born no later than ca 1608, and this
would eliminate Thomas Revell of Stannington associated with Shifnal. If Gregory Revell named in the mortgage in 1648 is
the father, then it is conceivable that he is the poorly documented brother of Thomas Revell of Stannington who is sometimes
described as George Revell.
Wadsley is very close to Walkley, 1½ miles east of Stannington, four miles north-west of Heeley, four miles south-west of
Ecclesfield.
Later Revells of Shifnal
A collection of Arms and Pedigrees dated 1710 held at Shropshire Archives includes Revell of Shifnal. 51
John Revell of Shifnal ~1660–1729, a putative nephew of Edward Revell (possibly son of William or
Thomas Revell)
Although the Shifnal parish marriage records are available electronically from 1638, 52 the Shifnal parish burial and baptism
registers are not readily available until 1679 (IGI) after which date a John Revell and Sarah are recorded as the parents of Sarah
Revell (June 28 th 1689), Edward Revell (July 18 th 1694), Ann Revell (April 16 th 1696) and John Revell (April 23 rd 1702). As
there are no associated births recorded at Shifnal in the period 1679 to 1688, presumably daughter Sarah was their first child and
the marriage probably in the early 1680s, suggesting that John Revell was probably born no later than the early 1660s. He
might therefore be either a son or possibly grandson of Captain Edward Revell.
Rather than a son or grandson, this John Revell might be the otherwise obscure nephew recorded on July 11 th 1690, along with
his Uncle Edward Revell of Shifnal, as ‘a disaffected papist in the Brimstrey hundred’. 53 If so, his parents are not known, but
his father would presumably be one of the following children baptised at Bradfield, a brother to Edward Revell of Shifnal:
2. Thomas, son of Thomas Revell, bapt 5 Apr 1629.
3. William, son of Thomas Revell, bapt 11 Aug 1633.
It is possible that his father is either the William Revell, cutler, recorded with a family at Barrow, seven miles west of Shifnal, in
1656, or the Thomas Revell of Salop who matriculated 1653, but proof is lacking.
The record of John and Sarah’s marriage has not been located. Shropshire Archives catalogue a marriage settlement and an
associated ‘Monumental inscription, and drawing of shield of arms, of Sarah Revell (d. 1704), daughter of Edward Brooke, and
her husband John Revell (d. 1729). At Shifnal’. 54 A plausible submitted record in the IGI suggests a marriage between a John
Rivell and a Sarah Brookes at Shifnal on July 2 nd 1683, but this marriage is not found in the extracted parish records for Shifnal.
This is probably the John Revell, who along with a Robert Moreton, is mentioned in connection with property at Heathton,
Whittimere and Claverley in 1689, 55 the John Revell of Shifnal mentioned in connection with property he was using at
Broughton in 1695, 56 the plaintiff in an equity pleading concerned with personal estate at Horton, seven miles north-west of
Shifnal, and the plaintiff in two equity pleadings concerned with property at Houghton and Drayton. 57, . 58 An Edward Revell is
also mentioned in connection with Horton, but is neither a plaintiff nor a defendant. 59 Both are named the same year as
defendants in an equity pleading at Stirchley, 60 but their relationship is unclear. A John Revell of Shifnal on May 10 th 1712
took Sarah Roberts as an apprentice. 61 A John Revell associated with Dawley, about four miles west of Shifnal, died in 1729. 62
Sarah Revell 1689–1757, daughter of John and Sarah
Sarah Revell daughter of John Revell of Shifnal married Robert Moreton, junior, at Shifnal on September 19 th 1713, and the
messuages in Kemberton (near Shifnal) and Little Chatwell (near Shrewsbury) were settled on them. 63 They also acquired
property at Smethcott, 64 previously held by Rosamund Revell. Robert Moreton died 1729 / 30 leaving his son a minor, 65 and
Sarah Moreton née Revell died 1757. 66
A daughter Sarah Moreton was born June 23 rd 1716 and baptised July 4 th 1716, and a son Revell Moreton was born July 12 th
1718 and baptised at Shifnal on July 19 th 1718. On December 6 th 1739 he married Frances Brookes of Blacklands. 67 He was
appointed Sheriff of Shropshire in 1742. 68
Anne Revell ?–1694–1746, daughter of John and Sarah
BHOL record an Anne Revell, daughter of John Revell as the wife of a Revel Phillips. 69 This Anne Revell is explicitly
described as the sister of Sarah Revell who married Robert Moreton. An attested copy of a deed dated October 1736 confirms
that Revell Phillips of Shifnal, gent., married Ann Revell, the daughter of John Revell. 70 This marriage, recorded at Chetwynd
on August 5 th 1714, appears to be between first cousins. Anne Phillips née Revell died 1746.
Ann Revell ?–1670–1695–?, putative niece of Edward Revell, and the Revell–Phillips connection
It seems likely that an Anne Revell married an Andrew Phillips but it has not been possible to locate a marriage record. It is
possible that her father is either the William Revell, cutler, recorded with a family at Barrow, seven miles west of Shifnal, in
1656, or the Thomas Revell of Salop who matriculated 1653, but proof is lacking.
A Revell Phillips, son of Andrew Phillips, was baptised at Shifnal on February 1 st 1690 / 1. Baptisms of Revell Phillip’s siblings
in the period 1692 to 1701 indicate that his mother was Ann, and in view of his forename, presumably Ann Revell. This Ann
Revell was probably born no later than ca 1670 plausibly making her a contemporary (but not necessarily a sister) of Edward
Revell’s nephew John Revell. Andrew Phillips and Ann Phillips are defendants in two equity pleadings brought by a John
71, 72
Revell in 1695.
A grant dated June 10 th 1518 records that an Edward Revell held land at Pycheford, as follows. 73
On June 10 th 1518 ‘Roger Whylwright and Margaret his wife, daughter of John Rukley late of Pycheford, co. Salop, junior,
deceased, son and heir of John Rukley of the same, senior, sister and co-heir of Richard Rukley son and heir of the said John
Rukley, junior’ granted to ‘Richard Ottley, clerk, and Edward Revell’ property described as ‘their part of messuages, lands, etc.,
in Pycheford’. 74
A grant of lands dated On February 7 th 1518 / 9 ‘William Oteley de Pichford, co. Salop, esq., and Margery his wife’ granted to
‘John Leighton, George Corbet, esquires, John Bruyne de Stapulford, Thomas Astley, and Roger Luter, chaplain’ property
described as ‘lands, etc., in Chester, co. Cheshire, and Hawardyn, co. Flint, with letters of attorney to Edward Revell to deliver
seisin thereof’. 75
Pitchford is some seven miles south of Shrewsbury and some 15 miles south of Wem.
This Edward Revell must have been born no later than ca 1498. His origin is obscure, but there are business dealings between
the Astley family and the Revells of Derbyshire that might be relevant.
On November 4 th 1548 there was a ‘Feoffment by John Lytelton and Thomas Asteley to Robert Revell and William Hande of
lands as in D37 M/T557, to hold to the use of Asteley’. 76 This Robert Revell is a son of John Revell and Margeret / Maragery
Eyre — see Part 4.
In the period 1563 to 1576, John Revell of Shirland, grandson of John and Margaret, had business dealings with John Asteley
77, 78, 79, 80, 81
of Ascot (co. Salop) gent. Other records indicate that in 1561 the estate of John Asteley (Astley) was at Aston (not
Ascot) about one mile from Wem and 12 miles from Shrewsbury. 82 One of these documents is a receipt as follows: ‘A messuage
in Stretton: Receipt for [...] B 36 13s 4d, Francis Hord from John Revell of Shirland esq. to the use of John Astley gent, in
payment for messuages and lands in Stretton and Sydenhall, 4 April 7 Eliz’, and other documents refer also to a ‘Gilbert Asteley
of Pattishull (co. Stafford)’
Note also that George Talbot, 4 th Earl of Shrewsbury (1468–1538), was born in Shropshire but died at Wingfield Manor,
Derbyshire (some four miles south of Ogston), and was buried at Sheffield.
Although the forename Edward is not uncommon among the Derbyshire Revells it has not been possible to establish any
connection.
Edward Revell, ?–1539–1575–1595, putative son of Edward Revell of Shrewsbury
The Edward Revell born late in the 15 th century is plausibly the father of the Edward Revell born no later than ca 1539, and
who is recorded as the father of children baptised at Shrewsbury St Julien, as follows: Hughe Revell baptised on May 8 th 1561,
Edmunde Revell on October 1 st 1563, Elyzabethe Revell on August 30 th 1565, Thomas Revell on November 8 th 1567, John
Revell on September 28 th 1569, Richard Revell on March 2 nd 1571 / 2 and Roger Revell on April 23 rd 1575). An older sibling,
Thomas Revell baptised on November 2 nd 1559, presumably died young. The administration of an Edward Revell of
Shrewsbury, dated 1595, is lodged at Lichfield.
It is reported in connection with an outbreak of the plague at Shrewsbury that ‘The register of St Julian’s parish, Sept 3 rd 1576,
83 84
speaks of five persons named Revell dying of it’. These records are not available electronically and are not in the NBI, but
must presumably include many of the above.
Note that John Revell of Shirland (see Part 4) had business dealings with John Asteley of Ascot (co. Salop) gent in the period
1563 to 1576. 85, 86, 87, 88, 89 Other records indicate that in 1561 the estate of John Asteley (Astley) was at Aston (not Ascot) about
one mile from Wem and 12 miles from Shrewsbury. 90
Hughe Revell, 1561–1611–?, putative son of the younger Edward Revell
A Hughe Revell had children baptised at Shrewsbury St Julien in the period 1599–1611, as follows: Marye Revell on October
26 th 1599, Elyzabethe Revell on March 27 th 1602 / 3, Roger Revell on January 6 th 1604 / 5, Richard Revell on January 25 th
1605 / 6, Edward Revell on October 9 th 1608 and Thomas Revell on October 28 th 1611. It is probably this Elizabeth Revell
who married Robert Gregory at St Julien on June 15 th 1623.
Thomas Revell, 1567–1611–?, putative son of the younger Edward Revell
A Thomas Revell married Elyzabethe Owen on May 6 th 1599 at St Julien Shrewsbury, but there are no obvious baptisms of
children associated with them. He might be the Thomas who gave evidence to an Inquiry in 1620. 91
The children of Hughe Revell
The following records plausibly relate to the children of Hughe Revell.
An Edward Revell who married Joyce is recorded at Shrewsbury St Julien as the father of John Revell (August 30 th 1635),
Elizabeth Revell (March 6 th 1637 / 8), Hughe Revell (April 2 nd 1641) and possibly Edward Revell (May 14 th 1648) but his
mother is not recorded in the baptism record.
At Shrewsbury St Chad a Mary Reevell married Richard Hall on September 9 th 1630.
An unnamed child of Richard Revelles was buried at St Chad’s, Shrewsbury, on May 14 th 1636.
A Thomas Revell who married Mary is recorded at Shrewsbury St Chad as the parents of Ann Revell baptised on December 8 th
1635, Richard Revell on September 7 th 1637, Robarte Revell on February 23 rd 1640 / 1 and Edward Revell on September 14 th
1641. It is probably this Edward Revell who married Elizabeth Bayly at St Chad on August 18 th 1667.
This Thomas Revell might be the individual who resided in a messuage on St John’s Hill, Shrewsbury, in 1636, 92 93 and with a
94, 95, 96
‘messuage and garden in Shrewsbury in a street called Shoplache als St. Johns Hill’, in 1647.
Records concerned with St John’s Hill dated May 14 th 1668 and 1669 also refer to a Thomas Revell who was described as a
‘currier’, i.e. tanner, and whose wife was Elizabeth, 97, 98 and these later records might refer to the Thomas Revell who at
Shrewsbury St Chad married Elizabeth Jones on June 24 th 1667, possibly a second marriage. St Chad’s church is on St Chad’s
Terrace, a matter of yards from St John’s Hill.
Later Revells of Shrewsbury
At Shrewsbury St Chad a Sara Revell married Thomas Hanmer on December 25 th 1664, and this is recorded also at St Alkmund
as the marriage of Sarah Revell and Thomas Hanmeere on December 29 th 1664.
A Joseph Revell who married Alice is recorded at Shrewsbury St Chad as the parents of James Revell (baptised September 30 th
1660 buried November 18 th 1663), John Revell (May 10 th 1663), Dorrity Revell (baptised August 3 rd 1665 buried June 3 rd
1667), Joseph Revell (baptised August 25 th 1667 buried October 6 th 1674) and Benjamin Revell (October 14 th 1669).
A John Revell, who married Mary, is recorded in the Alberbury parish registers as the father of William Revell baptised August
30 th 1692, Joseph Revell on December 13 th 1694, John Revell on March 26 th 1697 / 8 who was buried there on July 24 th 1699,
and Benjamin Revell on baptised July 7 th 1699. 99 This John Revell was born no later than ca 1672 and plausibly the son of
Joseph and Alice, above. Alberbury is about eight miles west of Shrewsbury.
