Welcome Dear Conference Attendees: We are pleased to welcome you to this first joint meeting of the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) and the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE). The theme of this conference, A Tapestry for Change: Addressing Chronic Health Issues in a Dynamic World, reflects a central focus of both of our organizations – a commitment to leveraging change to prevent chronic disease and its complications, eliminate health disparities and promote healthy behaviors. More than 75% of all U.S. healthcare costs are related to chronic diseases and much of that cost is preventable. Approximately 133 million Americans live with at least one chronic condition and seven out of 10 people die of a chronic disease every year. Five chronic diseases – heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes – cause more than 2/3 of all deaths each year. The rapidly growing incidence and prevalence of diabetes is particularly serious, and hence a subtheme of this conference. One in three children born today is likely to develop diabetes in his/her lifetime. Some 16.1% of the total adult population served by the Indian Health Service had diagnosed diabetes, with rates varying by region from 5.5% among Alaska Native adults to 33.5% among American Indian adults in southern Arizona. CDC reports that compared to non-Hispanic white adults, the risk of diagnosed diabetes is 18% higher among Asian Americans, 66% higher among Hispanics, and 77% higher among non-Hispanic blacks. Addressing these contemporary chronic disease challenges will demand new paradigms and partnerships. We must expand our search for evidence-based strategies and maximize opportunities to achieve health equity through policy, systems and environmental change. Integrating health promotion research, chronic disease prevention, and community capacity through the experience, expertise, and commitment of diverse stakeholders will improve our collective ability to impact the public’s health. This meeting is designed to weave a tapestry of new connections among chronic disease directors, health education practitioners, allied health professionals, students, community members, and others dedicated to chronic disease prevention and control. Please avail yourself to the many outstanding skill-building workshops, concurrent sessions, and posters, as well as breaks, socials, and lunch-time roundtables to meet new colleagues who can help fortify your research and practice. Finally, we wish to thank the many SOPHE and NACDD members who served on the planning committee in creating this wonderful academy and meeting. Support from the CDC Division of Diabetes Translation, the Navajo Health Education Program, the Paso del Norte SOPHE chapter and our various exhibitors also has enriched this conference opportunity.
