Founded on September 23, 1950, and active until
1962, the Beta Chi Chapter was refounded on April
23, 2005. Today, Beta Chi provides support to the
Cavalier Marching Band as well as other ensembles,
works to reach out to the larger Charlottesville music
community, and fosters fellowship and Brotherhood
internally as well as to others involved with music in
and around UVa. (Pictured above and on Cover) This
year, Beta Chi cemented its growth and activity by
hosting Southern Precincts.

The Psi Class certainly did not
have a perfectly smooth membership
process, with two failed quizzes
and the concern of a slight
lack in class bonding; however by
the end we came together and
showed our true dedication and
hard work. On the evening before
the last quiz, the Psi class had a
gathering on the lawn to go over
the material. As we quizzed each
other, took pictures, and shared
some laughs, the Psi class really
came together in the end. Yes, we
still failed that quiz. However, the
fact that all fifteen members of
the Psi class came out to the lawn
and put in a valiant effort to memorize
all the information
shows what our class is
really about. We’re a dedicated,
persevering group
who care about each other
and about the fraternity.
Looking back, it seems like
the semester flew by in a
whirlwind. From the bid
night festivities all the way
to Third Degree, we grew,
changed, and unified as a
a class and as membership
candidates of Kappa Kappa
Psi. I know I speak for the
entire Psi class when I say
thank you to all our brothers
who helped us through.
The Psi class looks forward
to their time as brothers of
KKPsi and in the future, I
know there will be many
more gatherings and bonding
experiences.
Class after First Degree

If there’s one thing that I’ve
learned over this past year as a
Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, it is that
striving for the highest doesn’t end
when you cross over.
And there’s no one better to
share this goal with than your family.
My big and I had already become quite
close following my MC process, but
this year I decided it was time to get
to know my grandbig Marbury after
she returned from being “across the
pond,” as they say. I know that we may
have made Kyle feel like a third wheel
humanities major at times when discussing
biology, but for the sake of
closer bonding, I’d say that it was
worth it. Getting different perspectives
is something I always enjoy gathering
from my friends, and hearing a
fourth year’s account of England as
well as UVA was a great addition to
that mental scrapbook.
I also began to realize how the
Big-Little bond doesn’t simply end
once you cross over. If anything, me
and Kyle (Reumpler) have become
even closer since I’ve become a
Brother. Whether it be complaining
about assignments we have to do,
talking about music, or trying to keep
it together while waiting for CMB leadership
to come out, I know that I can
easily talk to him about whatever,
whenever. And he was also a great
source of support for when I would be in
his position.
After my MC process, I knew that I
wanted to be a Big Brother. Being there for
another person as they embarked on their
journey towards brotherhood had always
appealed to me to say the least. However,
I still could not have anticipated
just how special this experience
would be. I know that I had previously
joked about also having a Little
named Kyle, but I never guessed that
it would actually happen or that this
pairing could be so perfect. As our
musical tastes are not necessarily
the most popular or “mainstream,” if
you will, it was a pleasant surprise to
know someone else who shared this
with me. More than that, I was imby
his obvious passion for music.
Listening to him speak about this
universal language that we hold
dear was wonderful because it
not only showed me how great of
an addition he would be to the
Brotherhood, but also reminded
me of my own journey thus far in
KKΨ and how music has touched
me as well. I can only hope that I
was half as helpful as the example
that was set for me by my
Big (Kyle Sr.) so that I (Kyle Jr.)
could help my Little (Kyle III)
achieve his potential in this Fraternity.
Regardless of how effective
I was, I know that I am already
proud of Kyle III based on
what he has accomplished thus
far. And I am also proud of Kyle
Sr. becoming a drum major, and
of Marbury for graduating from
UVA in order to move on into the
real world. They all set great
examples of how to continually
strive for the highest both in
KKΨ and in their personal lives.
They make me proud to be a part
of the “Three Kyles and a Marbury”
family.

Congratulations to all of Beta Chi for receiving the Northeast District Chapter Academic
Achievement award for maintaining a chapter GPA of above 3.0

This video is part of a
final school project I
had to make while studying abroad at
the University of Bath in England, but I
thought it would also fit well into the
Beta Chi Chronicle. The inspiration to
make this video came when I was sitting
on a bench by the Bath Abbey, taking
in the scene before my eyes. One
of the regular entertainers (guy with
the Union Jack cap in the video) gave a
really great performance of Simon and
Garfunkel's Sound of Silence, and like
anytime I decide to just chill for a second
to listen to music, it really brightened
the moment for me. Throughout
my time here, I’ve always taken note of
how talented all these Bath street performers
are. Sitting and listening to
their music against the gentle murmur
of people passing by or stopping to
listen has become one of my favorite
things to do while abroad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=ivhAKXf_pEU&feature=youtu.be
Bath is known for being a very beautiful, old,
and historical place with strong Roman and
Victorian-era influences in the landscape.
But you’ll notice that the main subject
of my video isn’t landscape or architecture;
it’s the people, especially the musicians.
I love the liveliness and “out of placeness”
that the performers bring to this city
that’s known for its pristine, clean image.
And even though thousands of tourists
from across the world walk through these
streets every year, I always see the audience
clapping, smiling, and singing along -
no matter where they originate. That's music
acting as the universal language, ladies
and gentlemen. It's a beautiful thing.
I hope this video allows you to catch a
glimpse of the scenes I see every day, and I
also hope you all enjoy watching this as
much as I enjoyed making it.

As I sit in new Newcomb using up
my last meal swipe of my undergraduate
career, I realize that it is just too hard to
wrap my head around it all. The best four
years of my life thus far are coming to a
close, and I am off to a scary land of
witch trials, terrible accents, and what I
can only assume is an energy grid still
based entirely off oil from whale blubber.
To the alumni out there, Newcomb
Hall barely resembles itself from
four years ago. Gone are the nacho bar
and weird terrace overlooking the plaza!
In with the ceremonial columns, the
streamlined and expanded dining hall, and
the more attractive but still irrelevant
game room. Newcomb Hall has changed,
and so has your Chapter. This is the one
time I have to agree with Helen in Bridesmaids:
Annie: I think we stay the same, but grow I guess,
a little bit. / Helen: I think if you're growing, then
you're changing. / But I mean we're changing
from who we are, which we always stay as. / Not
really. I don't think so. / I think so. / I don't.
We have an expanded role in the NED,
made countless contacts and new friends in the
area, and are constantly trying to reassess our
role in the CMB and strengthen the bonds of
Brotherhood. I could not be more proud of how
we have grown. Some of my best memories of
UVA are with Beta Chi.
Having said that, I want to repeat a
theme from my charges to Active Brothers at the
last meeting of the semester: don’t be afraid to
voice your opinions, but remain cool, collected,
and respectful. I hope you realize your time here
is too short to let trivial issues ruin even a minute
of your time. As this organization continues
to strive to improve itself, there will undoubtedly
be conflict. Address this conflict openly and honestly,
and then get back to the fun stuff as soon
as you can. I cannot wait to see what Beta Chi
accomplishes and how it will change in the future.

I can’t believe how fast these past
four years have flown by. I remember
walking into the tent at
the Doubletree in the fall of 2009
having no idea what my band experience
at UVa would bring.
Looking back on my time here, I
can say without a doubt that the
experiences I’ve had and friends
I’ve made through our band and
Chapter, will be the ones I carry
closest to me when I leave UVa.
As I think many fourth
years would admit, with as many
band experiences as we’ve had,
they do tend to blend together.
The dozens of football games,
band camp scavenger hunts, awkward
director chats, and let’s not
forget what feels like the thousand
times Al Chez has graced us
with his presence, have all in their
own way shaped our time in the
CMB. It’s amazing to me how
much I feel I’ve grown as a musician,
a person, and a friend
throughout my time here.
Throughout all the wonderful
memories I have of my four years
in band, I think there is one that
has captured the true meaning of
my time in the CMB. November
15, 2012 – UVa vs. UNC – our
fourth years’ last home football
game and last chance to perform
as one in Scott Stadium. What a
night. Showing up at the Hunter
Smith Band Building on a Thursday
afternoon for starters, the
shortest rehearsal I think any of
us have experienced, and our last
section bus ride over to the stadium.
Sitting in front of the trumpets,
hearing them all cheer for
me to make a speech after
spending three years as their
section leader, brought me to
absolute tears. I cannot express
how much I will miss my section;
my team; my friends.
Although the football team
just couldn’t pull out the win,
our fourth years certainly
had the evening they deserved.
Standing in front of
the band, listening to the
underclassmen play, hearing
what the band would sound
like after we moved on, was
more moving than I can put
into words. It was certainly
the perfect ending to an
amazing night.
I would like to finally
take this time to thank each
and every one of you for
helping the CMB and Beta Chi
get to where we are now. I
feel that each of us brings a
unique feature to these organizations,
making them
grow and mature with each
passing year, and I cannot
wait to return to see just
how high we can strive.
