stations of portable telephone systems. However, at present,<br />

only several thousand filters are employed in the world,<br />

because of the cost of the cooling system.<br />

9.3.2 SQUID<br />

The structure and characteristics of the SQUID system<br />

using a low-temperature Nb superconductor are well known.<br />

It shows very high sensitivity to a magnetic field.<br />

In the case of using high temperature superconductors<br />

such as YBCO, the superconducting thin film is sputtered on<br />

the plate of a bicrystal, and Josephson junctions are formed<br />

on the crystal boundary. The sensitivity of SQUID systems<br />

using YBCO operating at 77 K is about ten times lower<br />

than that of an Nb-based system operating at 4 K, but by<br />

improving the manufacturing process and the design, the<br />

sensitivity will be increased in the near future.<br />

Note that a SQUID system using a Hg-based hightemperature<br />

superconductor showed low flux noise level<br />

several times smaller than that using YBCO at 77 K.<br />
