of Hawaii, usully shortened to the "East-West Center", incurred<br />

approximately $1,000 of expenses; but these expenses are being<br />

underwritten, on a pro rata basis, by<br />

the private business<br />

organizations who participated and there will not be any cost to<br />

the U.S. Government.<br />

The other cost is the travel cost born by<br />

the members of the Mission who came from Thailand.<br />

This averages<br />

approximately $1,200 per person.<br />

in addition, there is also the<br />

cost for travel and expenses of the American firms who entertained<br />

the Thai, showed them through their factories, and who attended<br />

the American Management Seminar in New York.<br />

Even though it may not properly be consideed part of the<br />

cost of th., Missio, nevertheleso the indirect cost for salaries<br />

of the participants frowji Thailand and of the American business<br />

firms, probably amounts to several times as much as the total<br />

direct cost of the Mission.<br />

Although the total of the direct and<br />

indirect costs were many times the amount of the U.S. funds<br />

expended, there is no doubt that had it not been for thc leverage<br />

from the direct U.S. expenditures, the Mission would probably not<br />

have taken place.<br />

Thai and (b) to encourage the establishment of a permanent<br />

private sector communication between the Thai businessmen and<br />
