Hospital construction works peak in July
The number of workers employed on the construction of the new clinical services building
at Cairns Hospital peaked in July at just under 400.
Bob Norman, Chair, Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board said works are
progressing at an impressive pace.
“Construction of the new building is expected to be complete in early 2014 with wards and
services opening in their new modern facilities a couple of months later,” Mr Norman said.
“The number of workers peaked at just under 400 in July including 28 apprentices and is
now fluctuating between 350 - 380 depending on the works happening on any particular
day.”
“All trades are represented on site currently reflecting the huge scope of works underway,”
he said
The trades range from formwork to painting, renderers, carpenters, vinyl layers, framers,
steel fixtures, structural steel installers, water proofers, façade and window installers,
concreters, cabinet makers, electrician, plumbers, mechanical sprinkler installers, data,
security, and more.
The managing contractor Lend Lease has awarded tenders to a number of Cairns
businesses. These currently include: CCW Cabinet Works, HPS Plumbing, HPS Roofing,
Cairns Steel Fabricators, Fitzroy Fabrications, GND Cairns Painters, J Bros, RPS Australia
East, Contract Building Services, English Engineering, Controlled Demolition Breakthrough
NQ, Down to Earth Demolitions, G James, GDA Constructions, and Protek Security.
Work on the exterior of the building is nearing completion and next month it is expected that
the tall crane will be removed as the focus shifts to completing the building interior ready for
occupation.
All the joinery and cabinet works for the new building is being supplied and installed by
CCW Cabinet Works.
CCW General Manager, Daryl Doolan, said the hospital project has been a “massive boost”
for CCW.
“We have an overall staff of 45 and everyone has some involvement in the job,” he said.

“In this economic climate, this is huge for Cairns. There are parts of our contract that we
sub-contract out locally before installing on site and we are keeping a lot of our suppliers
around town busy.”
Bob Norman said the flow on effects of the redevelopment will continue to benefit the local
economy into 2015.
“The $454.6 million redevelopment of Cairns Hospital has been calculated to create
approximately 2600 jobs over the life of the project - from 2009 to 2015,” he said.
The Cairns Hospital Redevelopment will provide an additional 168 overnight and same day
beds by the end of 2015, bringing the total to 531 beds.
