TERMINOLOGY AND DEFINITION OF CURRENT TYPES In the book ‘Electrotherapeutic Terminology in Physical Therapy’ a start has been made on the standardization of electrotherapeutic terminology. In this book the authors have tried, as far as possible, to apply the recommended standard terminology. For the sake of clarity, the new terms are given below, together with the terms previously used. Amplitude Phase duration/phase time Phase interval Frequency modulation Direct current Duty cycle : Intensity, current strength : Pulse duration/pulse time : Pulse interval : Spectrum variation or spectrum frequency : Galvanic current : Phase duration/cycle duration ratio in a pulse train (Neo)faradic current A variation of intermittent direct current with a phase duration of 1 ms and a phase interval of 19 ms Medium-frequency direct current Direct current with a duty cycle of 95% and a frequency of 8000 Hz. Sweep mode: Time in which the current type changes into frequency. 48
