I am highly pleased to welcome all <strong>of</strong> you on this<br />
15th convocation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Management</strong> &<br />
<strong>Information</strong> Science, Bhubaneswar: An institute that<br />
has upheld its values <strong>and</strong> principles throughout its 16<br />
years <strong>of</strong> existence!<br />
I am deeply indebted to our Chief Guest Shri Sahay <strong>and</strong><br />
our <strong>Convocation</strong> Speaker Father Thomas for having<br />
accepted our invitation despite their preoccupation. On<br />
behalf <strong>of</strong> IMIS, I extend a hearty welcome to you, Sirs!<br />
IMIS has a focused vision that inspires us to look<br />
beyond Education <strong>and</strong> create ready pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />
Readiness for us is the culmination <strong>of</strong> positive attitude,<br />
impeccable behavior <strong>and</strong> invincible prudence that<br />
creates astute business pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />
As on date, IMIS has produced more than 2500<br />
Global Managers <strong>and</strong> Dynamic Entrepreneurs. IMIS<br />
firmly believes in the three basic institutional values<br />
<strong>of</strong> Discipline, Leadership <strong>and</strong> Commitment. This value<br />
system, in all its austerity, has proven to be a ladder<br />
that has geared us up to be ranked as A1 B-School in<br />
India as per the survey conducted by AIMA <strong>and</strong> CSR;<br />
A+ B-School by Business India; <strong>and</strong> one among the Top<br />
100 B-Schools in the Country by Dalal Street in the year<br />
2011.<br />
IMIS today is placed among the A1 B-Schools in India<br />
for its intellectual capital, institute-industry-interface,<br />
<strong>and</strong> training <strong>and</strong> placement. This could not have been<br />
possible without the unremitting <strong>and</strong> dedicated efforts<br />
<strong>of</strong> our faculty members, Executives, the support staff,<br />
<strong>and</strong> Students. From a small team <strong>of</strong> 20 members in<br />
1995, IMIS has moved from strength to strength <strong>and</strong><br />
now st<strong>and</strong>s tall with a Faculty strength <strong>of</strong> 35, Executives<br />
numbering up to 13, the support staff adding to 152,<br />
<strong>and</strong> around 500 Students bringing with them the cultural<br />
richness <strong>of</strong> 15 states <strong>of</strong> India.<br />
IMIS, the b-school that thinks ahead, endeavors to excel<br />
in all pursuits- may it be academics, career development,<br />
corporate social responsibility or intellectual contribution<br />
to the corporate- IMIS is commended for its exclusivity<br />
in nurturing managerial dispositions with the right mix <strong>of</strong><br />
human touch that makes the IMIS talents successful in<br />
all the functions <strong>and</strong> facets <strong>of</strong> corporate life.<br />
A seed is a dormant tree… it is realized into a tree only<br />
due to the efforts <strong>of</strong> those who have confidence to make<br />
a seed a tree. Our students are like potential trees, they<br />
are maneuvered in the right manner by our distinguished<br />
faculty to make them those fruit-bearing trees!<br />
Of course, this act cannot be successful without our<br />
dedicated Center for Student Development (SD) headed<br />
by Pr<strong>of</strong>. (Dr) S. Dev. It is one <strong>of</strong> our core competencies.<br />
Student Development continuously assesses the<br />
students in order to make them eminently employable.<br />
We do not believe in finishing school because overall<br />
development <strong>of</strong> the student in IMIS is a continuous<br />
process. For us, developing a student for a career is not<br />
30 hours affair… it is a lifelong engagement. Thus, we<br />
run a full-time assessment centre that evaluates trains,<br />
re-evaluates <strong>and</strong> retrains the students to create that<br />
RIGHT CORPORATE FIT!<br />
Along with this, Corporate Interface Programme at IMIS<br />
ensures that the students interact with researchers,<br />
consultants, <strong>and</strong> stalwarts <strong>of</strong> Industries to satiate their<br />
quest for knowledge. This year IMIS conducted Banking<br />
Lecture Series inviting 12 Banks; Marketing Lecture<br />
Series named Marketing Nuggets involving all areas <strong>of</strong><br />
marketing; <strong>and</strong> National HR Lecture Series with national<br />
HR heads <strong>of</strong> reputed organizations.<br />
IMIS is at the threshold <strong>of</strong> inaugurating a National<br />
B-school Meet “<strong>Management</strong> Odyssey”, soon after the<br />
convocation today. For making this B-School meet a<br />
success, I certainly express my thanks to Pr<strong>of</strong>. Tanmoy<br />
De, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Chunku Pani, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Sujit Kumar Patra <strong>and</strong><br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. Laxmiprada Patnaik whose active support <strong>and</strong><br />
guidance has provided the zealous volunteers <strong>of</strong> this<br />
meet to design, develop <strong>and</strong> execute the events.
Besides, during this year, 157 corporate personalities<br />
<strong>and</strong> 34 academicians visited the campus on different<br />
occasions to interact <strong>and</strong> deliberate with our students.<br />
This could happen only due to my dedicated faculty<br />
members <strong>and</strong> Corporate Relations Team. My sincere<br />
thanks to them for making this possible.<br />
As we all know ladies <strong>and</strong> gentlemen, that education<br />
is like water which remains fresh with progression.<br />
Similarly, at IMIS, we lay thrust upon the quality<br />
improvement <strong>of</strong> teachers <strong>and</strong> their teaching. Many <strong>of</strong> our<br />
faculty members hold doctoral / post doctoral degrees<br />
<strong>and</strong> keep adding value to their research acumen by<br />
presenting <strong>and</strong> publishing research papers in national<br />
<strong>and</strong> international forums.<br />
I take this opportunity to congratulate Pr<strong>of</strong>. (Dr.)<br />
Seshadev Sahoo, Dr. S. P. Mohapatra & Dr. Tanmoy<br />
De for being awarded Doctorate Degree during the last<br />
academic year. Dr. Seshadev Sahoo has published<br />
three <strong>of</strong> his research papers in the International Journal.<br />
In addition, I would like to mention here a few significant<br />
achievements <strong>of</strong> our faculty members during last year.<br />
27 No. <strong>of</strong> National <strong>and</strong> International Seminars were<br />
attended by 11 <strong>of</strong> our faculty members conducted by<br />
IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Kolkata, IIM-Bengaluru, IIM-<br />
Khozikode, IIT-Kharagpur, MDI-Gurgaon, IMT-Nagpur,<br />
NIST, KIIT University etc. All these papers were<br />
published in Peer Reviewed Journals.<br />
Ladies <strong>and</strong> Gentlemen, I will fail in my duty if I don’t<br />
mention the achievement <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> our students<br />
Mr. Yashdeep Dabas, PGDM, 2010-12 batch who<br />
participated <strong>and</strong> presented a paper with his Faculty<br />
Guide at Chengdu, China.<br />
Ladies <strong>and</strong> Gentlemen, when we say commitment is<br />
our motto, we mean it. A significant dimension <strong>of</strong> that<br />
is our social responsibility. Along with the regular Social<br />
Activities like Blood Donation Camp, Social Awareness<br />
Program etc. this year the dream <strong>of</strong> IMIS to do something<br />
significant in social front has come true. IMIS has<br />
patronized one Orphanage named as BINOD BASINI<br />
HARIJANA ADIBASI ABSIKA ASHRAM SCHOOL<br />
(BBHAAAS) at Balasore. Around 328 SC/ST boys <strong>and</strong><br />
girls were residing <strong>and</strong> getting education from Primary<br />
to High School level in that orphanage that was under<br />
managed due to paucity <strong>of</strong> funds. It was difficult for the<br />
children to get even two square meals a day. Added to<br />
this, there were problems related to accommodation<br />
<strong>and</strong> hygiene <strong>of</strong> the children. IMIS, in all its spirits <strong>and</strong><br />
righteousness, has signed an MOU to patronize the<br />
orphanage. An annual budget <strong>of</strong> Rupess 50 lakhs will<br />
be spent for the cause.<br />
It doesn’t end here, the students <strong>of</strong> rural marketing<br />
organized Rural Marketing Mela under the guidance <strong>of</strong><br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. (Dr.) Tanmoy De at Bhingarpur village which was a<br />
gr<strong>and</strong> success. It created an opportunity for companies<br />
to promote their products among the villagers. 21<br />
companies participated in this event <strong>and</strong> reaped the<br />
benefits <strong>of</strong> interfacing with the rural masses. Similarly<br />
the Finance Area Club “Finvista” <strong>of</strong> IMIS had organized<br />
a two days B-School meet for Finance Students from<br />
22nd Dec. to 23rd Dec.’11. Students from 16 B-Schools<br />
participated in this event. The event was exclusively<br />
managed by the Club members headed by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Divya<br />
Gupta with 100% corporate sponsorship.<br />
Coming to Training & Placement, there is a dedicated<br />
Placement Cell that works tirelessly throughout the<br />
year under the focused leadership <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>. S. Bhuyan,<br />
Dean (CR). Last year 96 companies <strong>of</strong>fered Summer<br />
Placement <strong>and</strong> 78 companies <strong>of</strong>fered final Placement to<br />
our students with an average package <strong>of</strong> 4.92 lakhs p.a.<br />
This year CRP-2012 is in progress with good response<br />
from the companies. So far 14 companies have already<br />
completed their recruitment process in IMIS.<br />
IMIS is a system-driven B-School. We’ve developed<br />
several processes <strong>and</strong> we continue to fine-tune them to<br />
match the needs <strong>of</strong> the industry. Students are groomed<br />
with a personal touch. At the same time academic<br />
focus is never compromised. I would like to thank each<br />
<strong>and</strong> every member <strong>of</strong> IMIS for making this happen.<br />

Success is a success if perceived a success. Madams<br />
<strong>and</strong> Sir, Success at IMIS is perceived as a yardstick rather<br />
than an accomplishment. Our success gives us strength<br />
to move ahead to create higher yardsticks <strong>and</strong> set more<br />
milestones. We do not see our accomplishments as an<br />
occasion to celebrate instead we perceive it as journey<br />
towards the pinnacle <strong>of</strong> excellence…. And the journey<br />
continues with the same rigour <strong>and</strong> devotion as ever<br />
before…<br />
