Revamping Rural India
The purpose we serve…
To create a bridge between the Rural & the Corporate
Understand the rural consumer
Create brand awareness about various products
Disseminate pertinent information among the rural hold
Rural India is a powerhouse waiting to emerge. This is an incredible opportunity of potentially adding USD1.8
trillion to our economy, equal to the current GDP of India! The exciting vision has to be the convergence of rural
Bharat with urban India. Rural incomes have unleashed a much higher level of aspiration among the 800 million
people living in rural India. We have the opportunity to create a thriving rural middle class, even bigger than in
urban India.
- Mr. Harish Manwani, Chairman, Hindustan Unilever Ltd.

Bridging the Gap
Revamping Rural India
“India lives in villages” – this phrase of old
has a much more pertinent ring to it today.
Ask “Why?” To discover the answer, we
would find that the corporate has reverted
to the rural, time and again; the reason
being that – therein lies the future of the
Indian corporate, therein lies the cove to a
vast untapped market, therein lies the next
big business idea – a great impetus to Indian
business. The trend started with one of the
jewels of the corporate in India - ITC Ltd linking
the hinterland with the urban market scene
with its e-choupal initiative, quick to follow in
ITC’s footsteps was another corporate giant -
Unilever. Both of them today are reaping rich
dividends of their pioneering initiatives, in
terms of unprecedented market penetration,
huge brand recall among the rural masses
and a huge market to be exploited over years
to come.
This year in UMANG we endeavor to return
to the greens, to strengthen ties and to
create new ones - between the corporate
and the rural masses. Like each year we want
to excel in creating the corporate interface
and giving them that platform from which
they can reach out and create a new market
revolution in our villages.

Villages - The Goldmines of Tomorrow
Revamping Rural India
The fine line that used to demarcate the
corporate – the highlighted business world
from the rural has almost become a smudge.
With a rural population of about 61% of the
total, they are becoming the drivers of a new
market economy. A marked increase in the
purchasing power, the level of awareness
and empowerment has given the corporate
a paramount alternative to look beyond the
already saturated urban market.
Barring estimates disclosed by Nielsen
that by 2025, the fast-moving consumer
goods (FMCG) market in rural India will hit
$100 billion and that inflation will be oust
by consumption, it has been noticed that
rural FMCG Growth will be driven primarily
by increased consumption and improved
pricing.
Taking these into account, with a view to
spread awareness among the rural consumers
about various brands of products they are or
aren’t well acquainted with and to cater to
the needs of a few of the 800 million, IMIS
has been instrumental in bridging the rural
and the corporate with its grameen mela
“UMANG” yet again.
… Come and be a part of the new dawn…

Revamping Rural India
UMANG 2010 - Banamalipur
… Resounding success each year …

The IMIS Initiative
Revamping Rural India
This movement calls for looking beyond what
we can see, for striving to pacify and defeat
the constraints which bind us; a strong will to
put our abilities to test and nullify whatever
gap that still persists.
INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT AND
INFORMATION SCIENCE (IMIS) established
in the year 1995 has played an indispensable
role in accomplishing its mission of instigating
professional management of democratic and
sustainable institutions for eco-friendly and
socioeconomic development. The institute
has been instrumental in continuously eking
out rural development. The institute focuses
on investment promotion, information
dissemination, training, capacity building and
technology exposure by organizing seminars,
conducting surveys, studies and executing
field assignments.
UMANG 2012
Revamping Rural India
Gone are the days in which people subscribed
to an image of a rugged life, a labyrinth of
penury. Poverty zones still exist but the
bulk of rural India is undergoing a colossal
transformation for which we have a volley of
agents and factors to be grateful to; agents
which have put abundant wealth into the
hands of farmers across the length and
breadth of India and churned it into a huge
consumer market.
Banamalipur in 2010 and Balipatna in 2009
(Khurda Dist). Now it aims to establish its
Reverting to our journey so far on this front,
IMIS had arranged a district level grameen
mela UMANG at Bhingarpur in 2011,
impeccable success at Pratap Sasan Girls’
High School, Balakati, Khurda.
