keynote speaker and will address<br />

professor in the Departm<strong>en</strong>ts of<br />
Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosci<strong>en</strong>ces<br />

on mood and perim<strong>en</strong>opause.<br />

of health policy at York University’s<br />

Managem<strong>en</strong>t, will speak on the<br />
social <strong>de</strong>terminants of wom<strong>en</strong>’s<br />

aca<strong>de</strong>mic and Research day <strong>2011</strong><br />
The 31st Aca<strong>de</strong>mic and Research Day, organized by the<br />
Departm<strong>en</strong>t of Psychiatry of the University of Ottawa,<br />
was held on June 2, <strong>2011</strong> at the Royal Ottawa M<strong>en</strong>tal<br />
Health C<strong>en</strong>tre. The ev<strong>en</strong>t was an Accredited Group<br />
Learning Activity as <strong>de</strong>fined by the Maint<strong>en</strong>ance of<br />
Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians<br />
and Surgeons of Canada.<br />
The objective of the day was to increase the rigor in<br />
aca<strong>de</strong>mic and research activities, and to incorporate<br />
best-evi<strong>de</strong>nce into clinical activities. The successful<br />
ev<strong>en</strong>t featured:<br />
‰ A keynote lecture <strong>en</strong>titled “White Coat – Black Art:<br />
How I do it” by Dr. Brian Goldman.<br />
Dr. Goldman, an emerg<strong>en</strong>cy room physician who<br />
has worked at Mount Sinai Hospital in downtown<br />
Toronto for more than 20 years, is also a promin<strong>en</strong>t<br />
medical journalist and the host of CBC Radio’s White<br />
Coat, Black Art. The objective of this lecture was to<br />
show how you take an i<strong>de</strong>a for and <strong>de</strong>velop it to<br />
become what is pres<strong>en</strong>ted on the radio and<br />
secondly, how to <strong>de</strong>velop what on the surface is a<br />
psychiatric topic, but approach it from another<br />
angle that makes it <strong>en</strong>gaging to the public.<br />
‰ Pres<strong>en</strong>tations on “Who are and what do the<br />
Canada and Endowed Research Chairs do within<br />
the Departm<strong>en</strong>t of Psychiatry?” by Drs. Pierre<br />
Blier, Georg Northoff and John Lyons.<br />

and Anxiety Disor<strong>de</strong>rs, Dr. Northoff, Canada<br />
Research Chair, Mind, Brain Imaging and<br />

M<strong>en</strong>tal Health Research at CHEO, <strong>de</strong>scribed what it<br />
means to be a Clinical and/or Endowed Research<br />
Chair and pres<strong>en</strong>ted an overview of their areas of<br />
expertise and role.<br />
‰ A pres<strong>en</strong>tation by Dr. Katharine Gillis on new<br />
programs and <strong>de</strong>partm<strong>en</strong>tal opportunities in<br />
telemedicine, wom<strong>en</strong>’s health, youth transition,<br />
and shared care.<br />
‰ Poster pres<strong>en</strong>tations highlighting 10 basic<br />
sci<strong>en</strong>ce and 33 clinical studies.<br />
The basic sci<strong>en</strong>ce posters were pres<strong>en</strong>ted<br />
by Franck Ch<strong>en</strong>u, Ramez Ghanbari,<br />
