I. Key Facts
Origins
IMD was established in January 1990, as the successor to two previously independent
business schools: IMI, founded in Geneva by Alcan in 1946, and IMEDE, founded in
Lausanne in 1957 by Nestlé. Incorporated under the name “IMD - International
Institute for Management Development,” IMD is a leading provider of executive
education for large- and medium-size international businesses and for individuals.
Our Difference
We are 100% focused on real-world executive development
We have a single vision—to develop global leaders through executive
development—and everything we do is geared toward achieving this vision. IMD
is run like a business, not only as an academic institution. This means we can
adopt a relentlessly practical, problem-solving approach to create real-world
impact for our clients.
We offer Swiss excellence with a global perspective
Based in Switzerland and operating out of key locations worldwide, IMD shares
its host nation's commitment to excellence while offering a truly global
experience. We are intellectually and culturally diverse, with no single dominant
nationality.
We are independent and entrepreneurial
IMD is a self-owned foundation without the constraints of university structures
and academic processes. We have no faculty hierarchy, departmental structure
or tenure system. We are non-dogmatic and have no national agenda. Our only
goal is to serve our clients as quickly, flexibly and effectively as possible.
We are world pioneers in program design and delivery
IMD is constantly innovating to give its clients the programs they need, when and
how they need them. We are pioneers in customized partnership programs and
innovative open programs—and, increasingly, in blended learning experiences
that combine the best of both.
Participants
IMD is truly international. Every year, about 8,000 executives, representing around 100
nationalities, attend some 20 open-enrollment Executive Development Programs
(including intensive MBA and EMBA programs) as well as company-specific
Partnership Programs. Participants come from virtually every sector of service and
manufacturing industries and range from young managers to board members from
major world-class corporations. English is the working language at IMD. No single
business approach or cultural background dominates.
bring the best of our insight and experience to the program design and delivery process.
IV. Research Center: The Evian Group@IMD
The Evian Group@IMD, founded in 1995, is an international coalition of corporate, government
and opinion leaders, committed to fostering an open, inclusive, equitable and sustainable global
market economy in a rules-based multilateral framework.
The Evian Group advocates trade liberalization to achieve growth and sustain the momentum of
globalization. The Evian Group believes that international trade and investment has the potential of
uniting people through greater mutual understanding and common interest across countries,
continents, cultures and generations, rather than dividing them.
The Evian Group has been described as a “birthplace of ideas” and in its diverse activities draws on
the collective wisdom and experience of its members, Brains Trust and associates to provide
greater knowledge, vision and direction in meeting the economic and social challenges of the 21st
century.
The Evian Group has also been described as a “bridge between North and South.” In its diverse
activities it seeks to reduce the “trust deficit” that has been an increasingly prominent feature of the
early 21st century between “developed” and “developing” countries. Greater transparency in trade
can foster better understanding and more dynamic relations.
The Evian Group, although global in its outlook and outreach, has focused on four key regions:
Europe, the Arab Region, Greater China and South Asia. All four have played a major role in the
development of global trade and world civilization. The four regions are vital to the establishment of
the 21st century global community, without which the global market cannot be sustained. The Evian
Group is committed not only to establish a constructive and strong presence in the four regions, but
also to act as a bridge between them.
The Evian Group adheres to the view that poverty, inequality, injustice and intolerance are the key
moral issues of the 21st century, as slavery was in the 19th and fascism in the 20th. It believes that
a market economy, founded on responsible capitalism, combining the critical role of government in
providing public goods, a strong ethical base of good governance and free enterprise are the best
means for generating growth, employment, empowerment and enrichment in terms of both wealth
and welfare.
The Evian Group is strongly engaged in working with the next generation of leaders and with youth.
It is convinced that if youth does not have hope in the 21st century, there will be no hope for the
21st century.
The Evian Group believes that every positive contribution, no matter how modest, counts. It also
adheres strongly to the words of Edmund Burke: “All that is needed for evil to happen is for good
men to do nothing”.
