the global economy must be
strongly anchored in
the multilateral rules-based
system.
A multilateral rules-based
liberal economic order is also
a prerequisite for fighting
against the spectre
of a "clash of civilisations"
and to alleviate poverty,
inequality, ignorance,
discrimination, corruption
and conflict.
None of this, however,
will happen without
enlightened leadership
and engagement.
Fostering a
Global Open Market Economy
and Inclusive
Global Community
The Evian Group at IMD is an international coalition of global
corporate, government and opinion leaders, committed to
fostering an open, inclusive, equitable, robust and sustainable
global market economy in a rules-based multilateral framework
and a strong sense of global community.
The Evian Group advocates trade liberalisation to achieve growth
and sustain the momentum of globalisation. The Evian Group
believes that international trade and investment have the great
potential of uniting people through greater mutual understanding
and common interest across countries, continents, cultures, and
generations, rather than dividing them.
The Evian Group adheres to the view that poverty, inequality, injustice
and intolerance are the key moral issues of the 21 st century.
It believes that a market economy, founded on responsible capitalism,
combining the critical role of government in providing public
goods, a strong ethical base of good governance, and free enterprise
are the best means for generating growth, employment,
empowerment and enrichment in terms of both wealth and welfare.
The Evian Group is strongly engaged in working with the next generation
of leaders and with youth, convinced that if youth does not have
hope in the 21 st century, there will be no hope for the 21 st century.
The Evian Group believes that every positive contribution, no matter
how modest, counts. It also adheres strongly to the words of Edmund
Burke: “All that is needed for evil to happen is for good men to do
nothing” – all that is needed for protectionism and trade wars to
break out is for promoters of the global market to remain mute.
This is the task The Evian
Group coalition has set itself!

A Robust
Global & Regional
Structure
The Evian Group at IMD’s governing
structure is composed of a General
Assembly which elects or co-opts members
onto the Executive Committee.
The Evian Group benefits from the guidance and
moral support of its Honorary Council composed of
eminent persons who have played a key role in
pushing forward the global multilateral open economic
agenda.
The main intellectual input comes from the Brains
Trust, composed of leading experts in diverse
fields and from diverse professions committed to
playing an active role in the policy domain.
There are three regional Boards established in
three key Evian geographic areas of focus.
The regional Boards play a pivotal role both within
each region and between them.
The strong and active bridge between generations
is the Open World Initiative (OWI), members of
which are systematically included in all Evian activities
and who represent a dynamic reservoir of
young talent.

A Think Tank
The Evian Group's Brains Trust is composed of
opinion leaders, drawn from industry, academe,
think tanks, international organisations,
NGOs and the media, from both industrialised
and developing countries, and from different
generations.
Its members are called upon to:

An Advocacy
The Evian Group informs and seeks to influence
policy makers on the global economic
agenda and provides them with intellectual
ammunition in support of open and inclusive
trade and investment policies.
This is done by:
Inviting policy makers to The Evian Group
forums;
Direct correspondence;
Participating in campaigns;
Active publishing in the global media.
In recent years, The Evian Group articles have
appeared in English, Arabic, French, Italian,
Portuguese, Spanish, Czech, Russian, Chinese,
Korean, Japanese and German.
An Education Centre
The Evian Group is a member of Garnet, a
European Network of Excellence on global governance,
regionalisation and regulation, based
at the Centre for Study of Globalisation and
Regionalisation at Warwick University.
It is developing a number of joint programmes
with other institutions, including: the China
European International Business School
(CEIBS) in Shanghai, the Centre for International
Trade, Economics & Environment, of
CUTS, in Jaipur, the International Centre of
Management and Indian Studies (ICMIS) in
Bangalore, the Lahore University of Management
Sciences (LUMS), with Moutamarat in
Dubai, and the American University of Cairo.

Connecting with
the Future
The Open World Initiative (OWI) is about fostering and developing the ideal of an open,
sustainable and inclusive world economy and society for the decades ahead. Its aim is to
ensure the progressive renewal and rejuvenation of The Evian Group, to provide support
to the next generation of leaders, and to gain insights and inputs from younger members
in shaping and understanding tomorrow’s world.
OWI is first and foremost a global network and movement of committed young professionals from different
constituencies, continents and cultures intent on rich communication and intellectual fusion. Its key strength
resides in the aptitude to access local perceptions, solutions and sensitivities that reflect the kaleidoscopic
nature of the profound changes occurring in the global political economy.

Transparent and responsible global
governance on a global, national,
corporate, financial and individual level;
Sustainable economic growth generated
by open markets in a manner protective
of societies, natural resources and the
environment;
The primary role of the private sector in
promoting growth under ethical and

Council Members
The Evian Group Council Members are entitled to:
Participate in all Evian meetings and related activities
throughout the world;
Attend and vote at the annual general assembly;
Be appointed to the executive committee;
Be elected as officials of The Evian Group.
Council Membership is for a minimal three year period.
There is a two-tiered fee structure: members from OECD
countries pay an annual subscription fee of ChF20,000,
while members from developing countries pay an annual
subscription fee of ChF10,000, with the proviso that they
contribute an equivalent amount (ChF10,000) to the development
of trade and investment capacity building in their
countries/regions, by, for example, funding workshops,
internships and research fellowships.
Private Members
Private members are individuals who demonstrate support
for the mission and activities of The Evian Group. They are
not officially members of the General Assembly, but may be
co-opted on to the Executive Committee. Private members
have access to The Evian Group network, to the Brains Trust,
to all materials reserved for members and are invited to participate
in Evian Group forums. The annual subscription fee
is left to their discretion.
Sponsors
Sponsors can be companies, government institutions, other
organisations and individuals who make a financial contribution
to The Evian Group events, whether directly or in kind,
or to other Evian Group initiatives, eg scholarships, internships,
fellowships. Non-Members and all categories of
members can also act as sponsors. Sponsors will (unless
otherwise preferred) be named in association with the events
and/or initiatives. Amounts vary according to the nature of
the sponsorship.
