Professor of International
Political Economy, IMD
Founder & Director,
The Evian Group
This very exciting period
of profound change
in the global economy
is fraught both with
great opportunities
and great threats.
To enhance the opportunities
and mitigate the threats,
the global economy must be
strongly anchored in
the multilateral rules-based
system.
A multilateral rules-based
liberal economic order is also
a prerequisite for fighting
against the spectre
of a "clash of civilisations"
and to alleviate poverty,
inequality, ignorance,
discrimination, corruption
and conflict.
None of this, however,
will happen without
enlightened leadership
and engagement.
Fostering a
Global Open Market Economy
and Inclusive
Global Community
The Evian Group at IMD is an international coalition of global
corporate, government and opinion leaders, committed to
fostering an open, inclusive, equitable, robust and sustainable
global market economy in a rules-based multilateral framework
and a strong sense of global community.
The Evian Group advocates trade liberalisation to achieve growth
and sustain the momentum of globalisation. The Evian Group
believes that international trade and investment have the great
potential of uniting people through greater mutual understanding
and common interest across countries, continents, cultures, and
generations, rather than dividing them.
The Evian Group adheres to the view that poverty, inequality, injustice
and intolerance are the key moral issues of the 21 st century.
It believes that a market economy, founded on responsible capitalism,
combining the critical role of government in providing public
goods, a strong ethical base of good governance, and free enterprise
are the best means for generating growth, employment,
empowerment and enrichment in terms of both wealth and welfare.
The Evian Group is strongly engaged in working with the next generation
of leaders and with youth, convinced that if youth does not have
hope in the 21 st century, there will be no hope for the 21 st century.
The Evian Group believes that every positive contribution, no matter
how modest, counts. It also adheres strongly to the words of Edmund
Burke: “All that is needed for evil to happen is for good men to do
nothing” – all that is needed for protectionism and trade wars to
break out is for promoters of the global market to remain mute.
This is the task The Evian
Group coalition has set itself!

A Robust
Global & Regional
Structure
The Evian Group at IMD’s governing
structure is composed of a General
Assembly which elects or co-opts members
onto the Executive Committee.
The Evian Group benefits from the guidance and
moral support of its Honorary Council composed of
eminent persons who have played a key role in
pushing forward the global multilateral open economic
agenda.
The main intellectual input comes from the Brains
Trust, composed of leading experts in diverse
fields and from diverse professions committed to
playing an active role in the policy domain.
There are three regional Boards established in
three key Evian geographic areas of focus.
The regional Boards play a pivotal role both within
each region and between them.
The strong and active bridge between generations
is the Open World Initiative (OWI), members of
which are systematically included in all Evian activities
and who represent a dynamic reservoir of
young talent.
❝
I have never faltered, and I will never falter, in my belief that enduring
peace and the welfare of nations are indissolubly connected
with friendliness, fairness, equality and the maximum practicable
degree of freedom in international trade.
Cordell Hull
(1871-1955)
Eminent Members
of the Honorary Council
“The Evian Group, in
collaboration with CEIBS,
has played a very constructive
role in fostering open
communication between
Chinese government, academic
and business leaders with their
counterparts among China's key
trading partners, thereby
contributing to more solid
foundations for a strong global
trading environment.”
"It is through education
and dialogue that people can
effectively address and correct
misconceptions. Education is
the door to enlightenment while
dialogue is the window to
mutual respect and to healthy
and positive co-existence.
This is what we need more than
anything else to achieve peace
and stability in the world
of today and tomorrow.”
"In seeking to promote an open
global market economy
and an open global community,
The Evian Group has also
fostered a very open forum
for discussion on the critical
global challenges. At the Arab
International Women's Forum
we feel a close affinity with
The Evian Group as we share
the same goals and ideals."
“In the extremely turbulent
waters of the current state
of the world, The Evian Group
is constructing a bridge
between North and South which
should contribute to the global
institutional and spiritual
infrastructure that
is desperately needed."
"At a crucial time for
the evolution or retrogression
of the multilateral trading
system, the Evian Group has
provided sound and forceful
advocacy for freer markets as
a powerful instrument for
global peace and prosperity.”
"The Evian Group provides
a clear and compelling vision
and direction for an open
and inclusive global market
economy founded on the rulesbased
multilateral trading
system."

A Marketplace for Ideas
A Forum for Action
The Evian Group at IMD activities are
aimed at building confidence
and creating knowledge among its
members, stakeholders
and constituents; establishing vision
and direction by formulating agendas
for action; enhancing global business
leadership and business
statesmanship; influencing policy
makers; diffusing its ideas
and intellectual capital as widely
as possible; and preparing the next
generation of industry, government
and opinion leaders throughout
the world for the challenges
and tasks they will need to face.
❝
We have, in the WTO, the most developed,
sophisticated and, for the most part, effective
instrument of multilateralism that exists
today. It is however in peril and especially
for that reason we should recognise the great
effort undertaken by The Evian Group
in its tireless, energetic and quite passionate
commitment to the multilateral global trading
system and all that it symbolises.
OWI
Connecting with
the Future
The Open World Initiative (OWI) is about fostering and developing the ideal of an open,
sustainable and inclusive world economy and society for the decades ahead. Its aim is to
ensure the progressive renewal and rejuvenation of The Evian Group, to provide support
to the next generation of leaders, and to gain insights and inputs from younger members
in shaping and understanding tomorrow’s world.
OWI is first and foremost a global network and movement of committed young professionals from different
constituencies, continents and cultures intent on rich communication and intellectual fusion. Its key strength
resides in the aptitude to access local perceptions, solutions and sensitivities that reflect the kaleidoscopic
nature of the profound changes occurring in the global political economy.
The principles OWI
stands to defend:

Transparent and responsible global
governance on a global, national,
corporate, financial and individual level;
Sustainable economic growth generated
by open markets in a manner protective
of societies, natural resources and the
environment;
The primary role of the private sector in
promoting growth under ethical and
socially responsible codes;
Investment in human development, the
empowerment of women and youth, and
the enhancement of individual freedoms;
An open world economy that creates a
fairer and more tolerant open society, one
that promotes cross cultural and
intellectual fertilisation.
Main OWI activities

Meetings, workshops and informal
discussions around the globe that aim
to have an impact on policy formation,
individual civic responsibility
and information dissemination;
OWIFOR: an online network discussion
forum that strengthens the sense of an
interlinked global community in
addressing and debating contemporary
problems and discontinuities;
