Ethno medicinal survey was conducted in Satpura region with special references<br />

to Chhindwara District of Madhya Pradesh,<strong>India</strong>. This district is a forest<br />

district, Chhindwara district, has acquired importance because of its Geographical<br />

and Scenic beauty. Patalkot is a lovely landscape located at a depth of 1200-1500<br />

feet in a valley, inhabited by Gonds, Bharia tribes and they are entirely dependent<br />

on forest on medication. Information on 15 plants pecies belongs to 15genera and<br />

14families which are traditionally used as medicine to cure malaria was collected.<br />

The plant part used for traditional preparation and doses for administration are given<br />

in the present paper.<br />

The present paper deals with the traditional therapeutic use of Enicostemma<br />

axillare (Lam.) Raynal (Gentianaceae) from Kolar district of Karnataka State to<br />

treat rheumatoid arthritis. The plant is very rare in the district as well as in other<br />

districts of Karnataka State. It is a perennial herb with dull white flowers in each<br />

axil. The plant is very much use in folk medicine to treat various ailments including<br />

diabetes mellitus, rheumatism and cancer. It has potential antioxidants and antimicrobial<br />

properties due to swertiamarin, myristic acid, stearic acid, alkaloid and<br />

phenols. Therefore, an immediate measure is warranted to protect, conserve and<br />

propagate the endangered plant.
