OLIVER!
“Oliver!” is a musical adapted from the popular novel “Oliver Twist” by Charles
Dickens. It follows the story of a starving young orphan named Oliver whose
innocent request for more food throws him into harsh Victorian London. In
order to survive, he joins a notorious young pickpocket, the Artful Dodger, in a
band of thieves led by Fagin. His only hope of a decent life lies with a kind
gentleman called Mr Brownlow, but the ruthless Bill Sikes is determined to
keep Oliver in Fagin’s band of thieves to prevent their life of crime from being
discovered.

BAC 2013—und
dann?
In ein paar Monaten ist es soweit: Das
siebte Europäische BAC wird in dieser
Schule geschrieben und weitere 60 Schüler
werden diese Schule verlassen, um
ihre Pläne zu verwirklichen. Bei ihnen stellt
sich die Frage: Was kommt danach?
Um das herauszufinden, haben wir- Schüler
der S7- eine Umfrage gemacht. Und
das kam heraus: Viele von uns haben hohe
Ziele in Sicht und wünschen sich eine
schöne und erfolgversprechende Zukunft.
Unsere Statistik hat nachgewiesen, dass
die meisten in unserer Schule sich für
wissenschaftliche Berufe, zum Beispiel in
der Medizin, als Ingenieur oder in der Chemie
interessieren. „Ich finde es sehr interessant
Mathematik und Physik im Alltag
zu benutzen. Das gibt mir die Chance mir
selber eine Herausforderung zu geben!“
meint Yanni (S7) . Doch gibt es ebenfalls
eine große Anzahl an Schülern, die zu
wirtschaftlichen, politischen oder juristischen
Betätigungen neigen. Einige Wenige
wünschen sich in der Musik, Kunst oder
Filmindustrie ihren Weg zu finden. Ein
paar Schüler haben noch keine bestimmte
Idee und planen deshalb ein soziales Jahr
oder einfach eine lange Pause, in denen
sie mehr Erfahrung sammeln können. Sie
machen ein Praktikum bei Amnesty International
oder reisen durch die Welt. Wie
auch immer: Diese Entscheidungen werden
jeden einzelnen von uns in eine Richtung
steuern, die wir uns vielleicht vorgestellt
oder auch nicht geahnt haben. Dies
wird uns nur die Zukunft verraten können.
Positiv überrascht wird man, wenn man
die Erfolgsquoten der ehemaligen Europäischen
Schüler anschaut. Die meisten von
ihnen sind nach der Schulzeit sehr erfolgreich
geworden sowohl im privatwirtschaftlichen
Sektor als auch im Dienst der jeweiligen
Länder, als Diplomaten. Zum Beispiel
wurde Karl Falkenberg, der an der Europäischen
Schule Brüssel studierte, deutscher
Generaldirektor der EU-Kommission (GD
Umwelt). Weiterhin wurde Florian Henckel
von Donnersmarck (Europäische School
Brüssel) Filmdirektor der zwei 2007 Oscar-
Gewinner Filme “Das Leben der Anderen“
( „The Lives of Others“) und „The Tourist“.
Wusstet ihr, dass Boris Johnson, Bürgermeister
von London, an der Europäischen
Schule war? Oder dass Anna von Hohenberg,
Prinzessin von Luxembourg, auch an
der Europäischen Schule war? Natürlich
will nicht jeder unbedingt groß rauskommen.
Aber wer weiß? Vielleicht ist der
nächste Johnny Depp schon mitten unter
uns!

Wä hlen äb 16 ?
Man hört im Hintergrund ein lautes
Geplapper. Die Menge steht Schlange.
Sie wollen es endlich hinter sich bringen,
einen neuen Volksvertreter zu wählen. Wie
würde aber dieser Schauplatz aussehen,
dürfte man ab 16 wählen? wie würde überhaupt
eine Wahl ausgehen?
Da wir direkt vor Ort waren, hatten
wir die Möglichkeit einen der Wähler zu
befragen, der seine Meinung gerne mit uns
teilte. „Ich geh die ganze Sache ein wenig
skeptisch an, da ich von unserer Jugend
noch nicht vollständig überzeugt bin“, sagte
Sosa. „Ich bin mir noch nicht ganz im
Klaren, ob wir unseren Kindern diese Verantwortung
zuteilen können, da sie im
Grunde genommen nicht viel Ahnung von
Politik haben.“
In Deutschland leben zurzeit über
80 Millionen Menschen. Von diesen sind
es circa 62mio, die wählen dürfen, und
noch weniger, die tatsächlich wählen gehen.
Deshalb denken wir, falls Jugendliche
wählen dürften, könnte dies einen Einfluss
haben auf die Ergebnisse der Wahlen.
Eine Lehrkraft, die über politische
Geschehnisse informiert ist, teilte seine
Meinung mit uns und sagte: „Das Wahlrecht
könnte helfen, dass die Jugendlichen
eher als Erwachsene angesehen werden.
Die Situation junger Menschen würde stärker
von den Parteien berücksichtigt.“
Um mehr über seinen Standpunkt
zu erfahren, fragten wir ihn, was das Wählen
ab 16 für einen Einfluss haben könnte
auf die Bundestagwahlen. Er äußerte seine
Meinung und sagte „Es heißt, dass junge
Leute eher links wählen. Aus Erfahrung mit
meinen eigenen Schüler weiß ich aber,
dass die meisten CDU
wählen würden, also
eher konservativ sind.“
Da es zurzeit
circa 3,4 Millionen Jugendlichen
im Alter von
16 und 17 gibt, würden
sie nur einen kleinen
Einfluss von 5,8 %. Dies
würde, in Deutschland
zumindest, keinen großen
Unterschied machen.
Im Gegenteil zu
anderen EU Länder, wo
die Bürger nicht so beteiligt
sind an den Parlamentswahlen,
wie in
Italien, würden die Jugendlichen einen
deutlichen größeren Einfluss haben. In den
letzten Parlamentswahlen, in Italien, gab
es einen Unterschied zwischen den 3 wichtigsten
Parteien von nicht mal 1 %. Somit
hätte Italien eine Chance auf ein wiederaufstieg
in deren Internationalen ruf.

Deutscher Pianistenpreis geht in die Ukraine
Mitte April war es wieder soweit: Zum dritten Mal wurde in der
Alten Oper Frankfurt der Deutsche Pianistenpreis ausgelobt. Der
begehrte Pokal – eine wertvolle Büste des Komponisten Fréderic
Chopin verbunden mit einer dauerhaften Förderung des Preisträgers
– ging in diesem Jahr an den ukrainischen Pianisten Dimitri
Levkovich. Der junge Pianist, der vor allem in den USA studiert
hat, überzeugte mit der Konzertparaphrase über "Le Sacre du
Printemps" von Strawinski.
Levkovich erreichte aus 100 Mitbewerbern zunächst die Runde
der sechs Nominierten für die endgültige Preisvergabe. Die aus
zwei Gremien bestehende Jury stimmte nach der Entscheidungsrunde,
in der alle Nominierten ihr Können zeigten, für den jungen
Mann aus der Ukraine. Das Besondere: Jeder Juror stimmte
einzeln und in geheimer Wahl ab, um so jede Beeinflussung zu
vermeiden. Zudem blieben die Juroren des zweiten Gremiums
bis zur Entscheidung für die Kandidaten geheim.
Das Niveau der Kandidaten war erstklassig: Edoardo Turbil
(Italien), Gábor Farkas (Ungarn), Alexey Pudinov (Deutschland),
Viviana Lasaracina (Italien), Thomas Wypior (Polen) und Preisträger
Dimitri Levkovich (USA/Ukraine). Prof. Wolfram Schmitt-
Leonardy, Professor für Klavier an der Hochschule für Musik in
München und Sprecher des Vorstands der Jury, kommentierte
dies vor den jungen Pianisten so: ,,Selbstverständlich ist es sehr
schwer hier zu gewinnen und uns zu überzeugen. Doch auch die
Jury hat schlaflose Nächte. Es ist nicht einfach unter den 6 Nominierten,
die die hohe Kunst der Klaviermusik schon lange erreicht
haben, den Besten auszuwählen!“
Das International Piano Forum mit der Vorstandsvorsitzenden
Maryam Maleki bezog als Veranstalter des Deutschen Pianisten
Preises auch das Publikum mit ein. Moderatorin Medi Gasteiner
(Gasteiner Kultur-Management) brachte den Zuhörern die Abstimmung
für den Pubikumspreis näher. Dieser wurde am
Schluss verdienterweise dem polnischen Pianisten Thomas Wypior
zugesprochen, der mit seiner zweiten Rhapsodie mit eigener
Kadenz, geschrieben von Franz Liszt, das gesamte Publikum von
den Stühlen riss.
Als Oragnisatorin zeigt sich Maryam Maleki äußerst zufrieden:
„Die Woche des Deutschen Pianistenpreises ist für mich einzigartig.
Wir wollen der Öffentlichkeit hochkaratige Klaviermusik nicht
nur präsentieren. Durch die Unterstützung der jungen Pianisten
möchten wir ihnen eine Hilfestellung anbieten, in der sehr harten
Welt des Klavierbusiness Fuß zu fassen. Deshalb hoffen wir weiterhin
- auch mit Hilfe vieler neuer Mitglieder - zu florieren.“
Übrigens: Der nächste Deutsche Pianistenpreis wird am 28. März
2014 vergeben!

Lernen ohne Zukunft?
Eine Schule nur 13 km entfernt von unserer
Frankfurt. Die Regelschule am Sommerhofpark
in der vielbefahrenen Gutleutstraße
ist der einzige Lichtblick für viele Kinder,
die von Beton umzingelt sind. 350 Schüler
besuchen diese spezielle Förderschule mit
dem Förderschwerpunkt Hören, die vom
Landeswohlfahrtsverband Hessen getragen
wird. 90% der Schüler sind Ausländer. Viele
sind Kinder von Hartz-IV-Empfängern, Langzeits-Arbeitslosen
oder Sozialhilfeempfängern.
Häufig unterstützt das Jugendamt mit
einer Familienhilfe. Ab dem 4. Lebensjahr
ist ein Besuch dieser Schule in der Vorklasse
möglich. Hier werden sie in Gruppen von
jeweils 10 Kindern mit einem Lehrer und
zwei Erziehern betreut. Danach geht es
weiter in der fünfjährigen Grundschule. In
Frankfurt werden Hauptschulabschluss und
Realschaulabschluss angeboten, den in
den letzten zwei Jahren zwei Schüler
schafften. Die wenigen, die das Abitur anstreben,
müssen nach Friedberg auf die
Gehörlosenschule ausweichen.
Die Kinder kommen meist aus sozial zerütteten
Verhältnissen. Ihre Eltern sind oftmals
nicht bereit Geld in Bildung oder Essen,
insbesondere für Mädchen zu investieren.
(Schulpflicht für Frauen halten viele
Väter für überflüssig). Das Lehrpersonal
investiert regelmäßig Teile seines Gehaltes
in Essen in Form von Knäckebrot oder Müsli,
damit die Kinder den Schultag bis 14:30
durchhalten. Zu Hause haben die Schüler
selten Zugang zu Büchern, Lerntherapien
oder Nachhilfe.
In die Schule integriert ist die Pädaudiologische
Frühförderstelle, deren Aufsuchen für
alle Bewohner des MTK-Kreises kostenlos
ist. Desweiteren sind regelmäßig in den
Räumlichkeiten Logopäden und Ergotherapeuten
am Werk um den Kindern kleine
Erfolgserlebnisse zu verschaffen und sie zu
fördern. Der ursprüngliche Plan, diese
Therapeuten an der Schule an zustellen,
wurde vom Landeswohlsfahrtsverband
abgelehnt, damit hätte man auch Kindern
ohne ärztliche Verordnung helfen können.
Alle Kinder haben mindestens ein Hörgerät.
Die Gebärdensprache ist fundamental und
jeder Schüler hat einen eigenen Gebärdennamen.
Die Klassenräume sind karg, die
Gesellschaftspiele abgenutzt. Auf dem ohnehin
engen Gelände wird zusätzlich die
Blindenschule errichtet werden wie auch
ein neues Studentenwohnheim und einem
neuen Hochhaus.
An dieser Schule gibt es trotz allem Lichtblicke,
spielende Kinder im Sommerhofpark
und dem häufig prämierten Schulgarten.

Warum heißt der Römer "Römer"? Und wo gibt es in Frankfurt eine "Judengasse"?
Auch (oder gerade) wenn die Stadt einem
vertraut ist und man meint, sie gut zu
kennen, ist eine Stadtführung eine interessante
Erfahrung. Denn viele Einwohner,
insbesondere wir Schüler, sind mit
der historischen Stadtentwicklung nicht
vertraut.
Neben dem Goethehaus, den Wolkenkratzern
und vielen bekannten Sehenswürdigkeiten
bietet eine Stadtführung viel
Wissenswertes und überraschende Informationen
über die Mainmetropole. Wie
fast alle deutschen Städte wurde Frankfurt
im zweiten Weltkrieg schwer zerstört -
von der mittelalterlichen Bausubstanz ist
nur wenig übrig. Trotzdem gibt es einige
interessante Ecken.
Pünktlich um halb zwei begann unsere
Tour - eben am besagten Römer. Unsere
Führerin erklärte einiges zu dem berühmten
alljährlichen "Weihnachtsmarkt Platz".
Überraschend ist die Antwort auf die Frage
nach dem Namen. Erstaunlicherweise
hat dieser nichts mit den antiken Römern
zu tun.
Er hat mit der Messe zu tun, die auf dem
Römerberg abgehalten wurde. Und mit
den Kaufleuten, die hier Handel trieben.
Sie wurden je nach Herkunft in verschiedenen
Gebäuden untergebacht, und die
italienischen Besucher waren eben hier
einquartiert.
Am Main sind wir auch entlang gelaufen
und den Festungsturm an der Eschersheimer
Landstrasse haben wir ebenfalls
besichtigt. "Wir", das waren 19 Schüler
des zweistündigen Geschichtskures
(Deutsch) und unsere Begleitpersonen,
Frau Wilde und Herr Oettli.
Wusstet Ihr, dass das Eschersheimer
Tor, nahe den Kinos, ein alter Festungsturm
war, der bereits über 600 Jahre alt
ist? Hier verlief die Stadtmauer, die heute
in Teilen nur noch in der Nähe der Konstabler
Wache erhalten ist.
Den Frankfurter Dom, der genau genommen
gar nicht "Dom" heißen dürfte, haben
wir auch besucht und zu guter Letzt
waren wir auch im Jüdischen Museum,
das viel über die Geschichte dieser Minderheit
in Frankfurt während der letzten
Jahrhunderte erzählt.
Auch wenn es heftig geregnet hat und wir
kurzzeitig von einem orangen Lamborghini
alle sehr abgelenkt wurden, müssen
wir sagen, dass die Führung gelungen
war.

Oliver!
Emily Kenny (S6En), assistant director of
Oliver!, talks exclusively with members of
cast and crew to get the inside story on
the production of this fantastic musical
extravaganza.
POV – Assistant Director:
It was a great opportunity to be able to take
on the role of assistant director for “Oliver!”
after having been involved in several productions
as an actor since S2. At first it was
strange, because I suddenly found myself
with a lot more power and responsibility: at
rehearsals I could tell the actors who were
watching to be quiet, and tell the actors on
stage to speak louder. Being the assistant
director was also very tiring because I had
to attend every rehearsal, always remain
alert and pay particular attention to the
continuity of the scenes.
I have known that I want to pursue
a career in show business, as both
an actor and a director, since I was
13, so having the chance to be the
assistant director, and to explore
another aspect of theatre was an
invaluable experience that I will
never forget. I have learned a great
deal about directing, it has given
me a fantastic insight into the details
of how a production is put together,
and has also increased my
appreciation for how much work is
really involved.

What is the best and worst part about being
the director?
The worst part is worrying about whether
I’ve forgotten anything important. The best
part is seeing the change in the kids, and
seeing them stand on the stage and
achieve things they never thought they
would at the beginning of the rehearsal
process.
How long have you been involved with projects
like “Oliver!”?
Many many years. Since I was about 14,
which wasn’t very long ago, as everyone in
the school knows! So I started when I was
at school. My first project was a play with a
boys’ school called The Beaux Stratagem by
George Farquhar and I played Dorinda.
What made you choose “Oliver!”?
We chose “Oliver!” because it has lots of
young people in it, it has great songs, and
it’s based on a very good story by Charles
Dickens.

What is the best and worst part about being
the musical director?
The main reason why I love doing musicals
is the teamwork between drama, arts and
music, and the idea that the whole school
is doing a big project together. The result is
that students gain experiences which are
valuable for many different subjects and
which they will never forget in their lives.
For musicians it's also important to listen
and pay attention to anything that is going
on in a show. They don't just sing and play
the songs they have practiced but have to
react quickly to sudden changes and have
to concentrate and listen to the others permanently.
Of course it's difficult to find common extra
times to rehearse, and the music score is a
work in progress: sometimes there are
changes in the songs or new versions which
cause irritation, lost copies (which is the
worst part!), but I feel that the concentration
and the enthusiasm everybody contributes
can compensate for these problems.
And the thrilling excitement before and in
the show is also one of the best parts of
being the musical director!
How long have you been involved with projects
like "Oliver!"?
At the school I worked at before I came to
the ESF I had done some musicals before,
but the drama part was more or less improvised.
For me working on musicals has
gained a new dimension since “Little Shop
of Horrors” in 2009 and “Grease” in 2011
because of the fantastic collaboration with
Miss O'Neill and the actors. It made the
musicals into what they are meant to be: a
“Gesamtkunstwerk” as we say in German.
What made you choose "Oliver!"?
Last autumn I watched a school performance
of “Oliver!” in Wiesbaden and I really
enjoyed the great literary plot by Charles
Dickens, the quality of the songs, and the
fact that it is about people of the age of our
students. The main topics of the musical
(growing up, thinking independently, love,
and seduction by others) are still up to date
even if it is set in the 19th century.
Shortly after I had watched the show, Miss
O'Neill suggested to perform “Oliver!” and
of course I was very happy with that choice.
I also like the idea that the music has been
written for a small orchestra (unfortunately
we couldn't involve the whole orchestra)
and not for a rock band. That was a new
challenge for our school orchestra and me.
The songs are attractive for the choir as
well - like in most musicals there are a lot of
English lyrics to be learned.

Have you ever been involved in something
like this before?
Yes, but not at this school. I was
in Annie and I played Mr. Warbucks.
What is your favourite and least
favourite part of doing “Oliver!”?
My favourite part is the singing,
and what I like least is being hungry.
Would you do something like this
again?
Maybe not next year, but maybe another
year. I’m having fun but it’s hard to manage
my homework and studying for tests.

Not something you had to audition for, only
in primary school productions where the
whole class was involved.
What is your favourite and least favourite
part of doing Oliver?
My favourite part is meeting people and
getting the feeling that you’re part of something.

lines, but it’s still fun!
Would you do something like this again?
Yeah, definitely!

On Tuesday, 30 April, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands
abdicated after 33 years. In the morning, she signed the
act of abdication in the Royal Palace on Dam Square,
Amsterdam. Both the new king, Willem Alexander, and
the new queen Maxima signed this act as well. Everyone
was gathered outside to watch what happened in the
palace on big screens. Afterwards the royal family went
to the New Church, also on Dam Square, where King
Willem Alexander’s inauguration was held. There were a
lot of foreign quests; most were princes and princesses
from other European countries, for instance Norway,
Sweden, Denmark and Spain, or from the Middle East.
In the evening, the new king and queen made a round
trip through Amsterdam harbour and watched all kinds
of artists performing on other boats or on the quay. Their
three daughters were present the whole day. The eldest
daughter is called Pincess Amalia, who is now 9 years
old, and will succeed her father when she is older and
become the next queen.
The whole day was a
celebration, the people
felt gratitude for Queen
Beatrix and were excited
to have a new king and
queen.

Pessoa nasceu em Lisboa, no
dia 13 de junho 1888 e faleceu
emLisboa no dia 30 de novembro
1935, com 47 anos. Entre outras
coisas, Pessoa foi sobretudo um
poeta português, escritor e filósofo.
Ele é considerado um dos Maiores
poetas da Língua Portuguesa, e da
Literatura Universal.
O que é que faz com que Fernando
Pessoa ofusce todos os outros
escritores e poetas lusitanos? Em
uma palavra; heterónimos. O conceito
literário do heterónimo, foi
inventado por ele. Heterónimo refere
-se a um ou mais personagens imaginárias
criada por um escritor, neste
caso Pessoa, para escrever em
diferentes estilos. Heterónimos diferem
de pseudônimos, porque enquanto
os pseudônimos são apenas
nomes falsos, heterônimos são personagens
que têm seus próprios
supostos físicos, biografias e estilos
de escrita. No caso de Pessoa, há
pelo menos 70 heterónimos. Alguns
deles são parentes ou conhecem
uns aos outros, eles criticam etraduzem
obras de cada um. No entanto

Girls and Boys Day 2013
Comme vous le savez
sûrement tous, à l’origine
le Boys Day est une journée
où les garçons peuvent
découvrir des métiers
de fille, et vice versa pour
le Girls Day. Pour cette
journée, je suis allé dans
un bureau d’architecte de
Francfort très renommé
(Meixner Schlüter Wendt).
A mon arrivée à 08 :45,
les premiers projets m’ont
été présentés. Ce bureau
va entre autre rénover le
Henninger Turm, bâtiment
très connu à Francfort
Sachsenhausen. Le bureau
a gagné le concours
pour reconstruire le symbole
de la ville. Mon voisin,
qui travaille là-bas,
m’a montré le projet auquel
il travaille depuis
environ 2 ans : un grand
immeuble pour le nouveau
Europaviertel. J’ai vu
les maquettes et les différentes
étapes de construction.
Plus tard, un
collègue m’a emmené sur
le chantier du Schlosshotel,
un hôtel de luxe à
Kronberg. Car ce bureau
ne travaille pas seulement
sur des ch antiers
„modernes“ mais rénove
aussi des vieux bâtiments.
L’architecte m’a expliqué
qu’il y a deux principaux
intervenants : le chef de
chantier et celui qui prépare
les plans. Après une
courte pause de midi, un
deuxième collègue m’a
emmené sur le chantier
du Lessing Gymnasium.
C’était très intéressant de
voir comment planifier le
démontage des containers
qui ont remplacé le
bâtiment en rénovation
pendant plusieurs mois.
Je trouve que c’était une
expérience très intéressante
que je referais volontiers
et je conseille
vivement d’essayer à tous
ceux qui ne savent pas
encore ce qu’ils veulent
faire plus tard.

Marilyn Monroe had 6 toes from a genetic disease polydactyly.
This sometimes give poeple one or few extra fingers
or toes. This disease could happen to humans, dogs and
cats. In the olden days, people believed people with this
disease were witches and wizards.
Polydactyly is a genetic disease so it comes from the
genes of your parents.There‘s also another diease, opposite,
called oligodactyly which means that person has fewer
fingers or toes.

What can coke do?
There are 9 uses:
1.Remove grease stains from clothing and fabric (I had to start there)
2.Remove rust; methods include using fabric dipped in Coke, a sponge or even
aluminum foil.
3.Remove blood stains from clothing and fabric.
4.Clean oil stains from a garage floor; let the stain soak, hose off.
5.Loosen a rusty bolt; pour on some Coke and wait for the magic to happen.
6.Kill slugs and snails; a small bowl of Coke will attract them, the acid will kill them.
7.Help a lawn become lush and green
8.Prevent an asthma attack! Apparently, the caffeine in two 12oz cans can prevent
the onset of an attack.
9.Defrost a frozen windshield. Apply liberally and wait (I’ll see if this works in winter)
10.Clean burnt pans; let the pan soak in the Coke, then rinse.
11.Descale a kettle using the same method in 11.
12.Neutralize a jellyfish sting.
13.Clean car battery terminals by pouring a small amount of Coke over each one.
14.Cure nausea; let a can of Coke go flat then take a teaspoon of Coke every hour.
15.Also, flat coke can help relieve an upset stomach (aka “the runs”)
16.Make a Mentos & Coke exploding fountain. This one takes a 2-liter bottle of
Coke.
Caught the love virus???
People fall in love all the time. But what happens to your
body if you catch this common ´virus`?
If you've ever been in love, maybe, you thought it felt
similar to an addiction. And guess what; You were right.
As it turns out, scientists are discovering that the same
chemical process that takes place with addiction takes
place when we fall in love. It causes the creation of a
special chemical called Fenythylamine,together with
adrenaline.
Fenylethylamine make the heartbeat faster, breath more
rapidly, and the palms of your hands sweating and
your cheeks and genitals get an extra blood flow and
you start to feel happier.
When you’re in love, your adrenaline causes the reaction
that you’re on standby all the way. Your pupils get bigger,
your heart rate goes up, your breathing gets faster
and you are not so hungry because your digestive system
starts to work slower.

S5 work experience - a look into the future
Not being paid for half a month’s worth of
work - it sounds absurd! Nevertheless, that
is what happens to each S5 student at the
end of the academic year. The idea of this
two week long work experience is to familiarise
yourself with the working lifestyle.
Also, it’s a great opportunity to gain a look
at the career you might want want to pursue
in the future and whether it’s something
you truly enjoy. If this is the case, experience
at a relative place always looks
great on your CV when applying to universities
or work in that field.
It all starts with a blank page. No idea whatsoever
to write, completely confound. But
after what feels like endless days of pondering,
you will finally get an idea. After this
you need to write your CV, another seemingly
hopeless task. However, with the help
of peers and perhaps a few adults, it all
comes together eventually and you’re faced
with a nerve-wrecking wait. Will you get the
place? What if you don’t? When you finally
hear back and you find out you’ve been
accepted, the feeling of euphoria is unbeatable.
I completed the first of my two weeks during
the Easter break, and I must say it was
one of the best things I’ve done yet. I went
to a primary school in Finland, as a primary
school teacher is a path which I most probably
want to follow. During the five days
that I spent in this particular school, I got to
do a whole host of things. I even got to
teach a few (English) classes, which were
clear highlights of the week. I now know for
sure that this is something I want to do in
the future, and I owe it all to this obligatory
task.
All in all, I think that the fact that this assignment
is compulsory is an amazing
thing. If you know what you want to do with
your life, this is a way to ensure your certainty.
And even if you don’t know, this can
be the chance to find out. Trying new things
will open up your eyes to a whole new life
subsequent to school. However, if you didn’t
find a placement that you enjoyed, it’s
okay. After all, we still have our whole lives
ahead of us to figure out what way our journey

Emmy Abrahamson is a Swedish author
who was born in 1976. She is partly Polish
but she was raised in Moscow. When she
got older she studied drama in London
and then later she started acting in Amsterdam.
After a while Emmy then returned
to Sweden in 2009 after 10 years.
She looks typically Swedish, blond hair,
blue eyes. She’s a very cheerful and open
person which made the interview with her
very interesting and fun.
Emmy has written three books, “Min
pappa är snäll och min mamma är utlännning”
(this book is translated into German
“Widersrpuch zwecklos oder wie man eine
Polnische mutter uberlebt”) and it took
her 3 months to finish her book, “Only väg
is upp” (a little bit of Swinglish there, “Only
way is up”) and this book took her a year
to finish, and her third book is still being
edited.
Her first book was a bit of a sensitive
subject in her family because most of the
things in the book were based a little bit
on Emmy’s real life when she was younger.
It was a great feeling for her to have
written her very first book but she was sad
at the same time because she couldn’t
share her joy at the moment with her family.
The book wasn’t mentioned for about
Emmy Abrahamson
a year, but now the whole family is laughing
about it.
When asked about what she thought
about Germany she had to think a bit
about for a while and then said now she
has to be a bit diplomatic, but she said
that she rather preferred Austria over
Germany. The word candy pop-ed up in
the interview and she got really excited
and started naming all kinds of Swedish
candy that she loved (which all of you
should seriously try!!!). When Emmy isn’t
writing she really likes to paint copies of
other paintings and of course she loves to
read.
When Emmy was little
she told her dad that she
wanted to become an
author and then her father
asked whether she knew
what to write about. When
she didn’t know what to
answer, her dad advised
her not to become an author.
After that she got
really mad at him (and it
seemed like she still was a
little bit angry at him for
that).
When Emmy lived in
Moscow she went to an international
school and she still has contact with some
of her friends today that she had back
then. She loved her time at school. “It may
sound nerdy, but it really was amazing!”
She told us that she makes a lot of
spelling mistakes in Swedish. So, the reason
why she wrote in Swedish nevertheless
was that it sounds more true to her,
and because it is much harder to get an
English book published.
