Residence Hall <strong>Handbook</strong><br />

The Residence Hall <strong>Handbook</strong> provides resident guidelines and expectations in tandem with the<br />

Residence and Greek Life contract. <strong>Student</strong>s living in the residential facilities are expected to be familiar<br />

with all policies and procedures in the Residence Hall <strong>Handbook</strong>. The Residence Hall <strong>Handbook</strong> is<br />

available on the Residence and Greek Life website: www.iit.edu/housing/<br />

Residence Hall Guests and Visitors<br />

IIT residents are responsible for their guests and visitors. Visitors <strong>of</strong> residents are family or friends who do<br />

not attend IIT, IIT commuter students, or residents <strong>of</strong> another non-residential facility on campus. Visitors <strong>of</strong><br />

McCormick <strong>Student</strong> Village, Gunsaulus Hall, and State Street Village residents must present a valid<br />

government issued photo ID to the CDA upon entering the village complex, sign in with the CDA, and be<br />

escorted by their host while in the building.<br />

Guests and visitors are expected to comply with all residence hall rules and regulations. Hosts are<br />

responsible for the conduct <strong>of</strong> their guests and visitors. Overnight guests or visitors are able to stay in the<br />

residence halls within the guidelines <strong>of</strong> the Guest Policy. Guests and visitors are not permitted to stay<br />

Meal Contracts<br />

There are a number <strong>of</strong> board plans available to campus residents. Required participation in a meal plan<br />

Cancellation Policy<br />

All Room and Board Contracts are for the <strong>entire</strong> academic year. Should a student want to cancel their<br />

Room and Board Contract, they must submit a request by viewing the Cancellation Terms herehttp://www.iit.edu/housing/choices/cancellation_terms.shtmlStandard<br />

cancellation fees are also listed on<br />

the room and board contract.<br />

The 7-Eleven convenience store provides a large array <strong>of</strong> products for the campus community. <strong>Student</strong>s<br />

will find an assortment <strong>of</strong> snack foods, toiletries, and household type items.<br />

Shimer College<br />

Shimer is one <strong>of</strong> a handful <strong>of</strong> Great Books colleges in the United States. Instead <strong>of</strong> textbooks, students<br />

read original works by canonical thinkers like Galileo, Einstein, and Freud and more recent ones like writer<br />

Virginia Woolf and filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. Shimer seminars bring 8-12 students together with a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor to engage in intensive, open-minded discussions. Complement your IIT courses: sign up for a<br />

seminar at Shimer!<br />

IIT students may take courses <strong>of</strong>fered at Shimer College without paying extra tuition. You first submit a<br />

petition to the IIT Office <strong>of</strong> Undergraduate Academic Affairs in 101 Main Building. Then contact the Shimer<br />

Registrar Jim Ulrich at 312-235-3523 or by email at j.ulrich@shimer.edu to complete the process.<br />

Shimer hosts an annual Lecture and Performing Arts Series, which IIT students are welcome to attend. IIT<br />

students are also invited to audition for Shimer theater productions. For more information, contact Aaron<br />

IIT has regular shuttle bus transportation between the Main Campus, Downtown Campus (565 W. Adams<br />

St.), and commuter railroad stations. For additional information and a schedule, visit the shuttle bus web<br />

service via email at: shuttlebus@iit. edu. While the shuttle bus is not operated by the Public Safety<br />

Department, Public Safety will field calls <strong>of</strong> an urgent nature regarding the shuttle bus at 312-808-6300
