The Ombudsperson is dedicated to assisting students experiencing problems with any administrative<br />

department <strong>of</strong> the University’s Main Campus by considering problems promptly, confidentially and fairly.<br />

The Ombudsperson works to achieve a fair resolution <strong>of</strong> disputes. The Ombudsperson works to protect the<br />

rights <strong>of</strong> all parties involved and is committed to justice and fair treatment <strong>of</strong> all students at the <strong>Illinois</strong><br />

<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>.<br />

Orientation and Parent Programs is designed to help provide incoming students with a smooth transition to<br />

IIT by helping to provide relevant information and a variety <strong>of</strong> resources. There are programs designed for<br />

both students and family members. Orientation sessions occur prior to both the Fall and Spring semesters.<br />

Parents and family members are encouraged to attend the orientation sessions as well. In addition, the<br />

Parent Network is another way for family members to get involved with IIT. This group is designed to<br />

advance interaction and involvement between IIT, families, and students. All family members are invited to<br />

visit the IIT campus for Family Weekend on the weekend <strong>of</strong> October 13 and 14, 2012.<br />

Parking<br />

All vehicle owners parking on IIT property (except in metered spaces or other designated areas) must<br />

register their vehicle(s) with the Access, Card and Parking Services Office located in Hermann Hall<br />

(312.567.8968). A current parking permit in accordance with the parking policies must be displayed as<br />

appropriate. Current parking permit fees, permit designations, and the parking map can be obtained<br />

online by visiting http://www.iit.edu/~parking/. Parking policies are enforced at all times, and a complete<br />

copy <strong>of</strong> these policies can also be obtained online.<br />

The Public Safety Department, headquartered in Farr Hall, protects students, faculty, staff, visitors, the<br />

general public and property at IIT. All public safety <strong>of</strong>ficers are employees <strong>of</strong> Levy Security<br />

Corporation, which provides security and public safety services in many locations throughout the Chicago<br />

area.<br />

The Public Safety Department maintains an excellent working relationship with the Chicago Police<br />

Department and other law enforcement agencies. The duties <strong>of</strong> the Public Safety Department include<br />

rendering assistance in case <strong>of</strong> emergency, response and request for service; conducting investigations<br />

requested by administration; aiding in quelling any disturbances; enforcing university rules and regulations,<br />

and providing support for the escort service. They are required to enforce all regulations, the proper use <strong>of</strong><br />

buildings and facilities, and other printed regulations.<br />

The Public Safety Department maintains statistics on crimes and other incidents occurring on<br />

campus. Representatives <strong>of</strong> the Public Safety Department are available to discuss crime statistics and<br />

to answer questions about security on the campus. Upon request, a member <strong>of</strong> the department is<br />

available to speak to groups about crime prevention and security measures that can be taken to ensure<br />

the safety <strong>of</strong> the IIT community. Should a member <strong>of</strong> the IIT community become the victim <strong>of</strong> a crime, he<br />

or she should report it immediately to the Public Safety Department, regardless <strong>of</strong> how small the crime<br />

may seem. Any suspicious persons or suspicious activities should always be immediately reported to the<br />

Public Safety Department. An extensive network <strong>of</strong> yellow emergency phones is located throughout the
