Who and where are the Equator Banks? - IILJ

This is a summary report of the results of a survey into the impact of the
Equator Principles on the lending practices of the banks that have adopted
them. Members of our London environmental, planning and regulatory
group carried out the survey, with the assistance of partners and associates
in the firm’s project finance group. The summary report is very much a
work in progress.
The survey was conducted first, by means of specially tailored
questionnaires addressed to the major project finance banks (both Equator
Banks and others); sponsors of major projects, ethical funds, consultants,
and public bodies; and environmental and other non-government
organisations (NGOs) (including some which specifically monitor the
activities of banks). Secondly, a series of interviews was conducted with
leading figures at the Equator Banks, non-Equator Banks, sponsors, NGOs,
trade associations, law firms, accountancy firms, public bodies and
consultancies experienced in implementing and advising on the Equator
Principles. In some cases, it was possible to obtain good quality information
in a single interview. However, in some cases more than one interview was
carried out with the same person or with several people at one institution
not only to fill in information gaps or deficiencies in knowledge but
because we found that they had important insights and valuable knowledge
of aspects of the evolution, drafting, implementation or impact of the
Equator Principles.
In this summary report, we have not identified any participants or
organisations or attributed views or quotations to any participant and we
have not cited more than a handful of written or electronic sources.
