IHSAA - Celebrating 100 Years of Hoosier Hysteria
3

Welcome to this
championship event
For more than 100 years, the IHSAA has enjoyed
being a part of the journey to adulthood for thousands
of young Hoosiers. Knowing that the student-athletes
we meet today will be the leaders of tomorrow, we are
grateful for the opportunity to help them as they learn
valuable life lessons through athletics.
Currently in Indiana, over 160,000 students from 411
different IHSAA member schools participate in high
school athletics. From our perspective, participation in
athletics is an integral part of the educational process.
At the IHSAA we believe
that the athletic arena is an
extension of the classroom.
The national organization
for high school athletics, the
National Federation of State
High School Associations
(NFHS) has used the slogan,
“Athletics, the other half of
education.” We believe that
is a very accurate adage.
There are many things to be
learned through athletics that may not be a part of the
regular classroom setting including lessons such as,
self-discipline, the value of teamwork, the importance
of dedication and commitment. Each of these can
have a dramatic impact on today’s youth as they
prepare to become the leaders of tomorrow. Whether
it’s their ability to deal with success or overcome great
adversity, the important lessons learned will last a
lifetime. Each experience helps shape who one is and
who they will become.
For an organization such as ours, integrity is of primary
importance. An uncompromising adherence to the
principles of fair play and impartiality form the core of
our value system.
We hope you are looking forward to the 2009-10
school year with the same anticipation and enthusiasm
as the IHSAA staff and Board of Directors.
Pure, wholesome, amateur, educational, inexpensive,
local high school athletics has always been the objective.
It is what we mean when we say…Pure Spirit.
Pure Sport!
Cordially,
VYPE High School Sports
Magazine, Central Indiana
Tournament
Preview
It all started with Crawfordsville versus Lebanon at
Assembly Hall in Bloomington a century ago. Since, it has
become legend and a way of life in Indiana. High school
boys basketball has captured our imaginations, made us
cheer and rejoice. Today, we applaud a magical milestone
in hoops history.
Happy 100th anniversary Hoosier Hysteria!
Today, the spotlight belongs to you, the legends of
yesterday and the four champions yet to be inducted into
your exclusive fraternity of basketball immortals.
But who, you ask? Will it be the high-scoring Class A
Bowman Academy Eagles, the surprising Class 2A Park
Tudor Eagles, the surging 2A Wheeler Bearcats or the 3A
Gary Wallace Hornets?
Is it Class A Barr-Reeve’s turn to break though after two
runner-up finishes in tournament’s past? Will it be 4A North
Central or Warsaw at night’s end? Is it going to be another
perfect day for 3A Washington, who has yet to lose at the
State Finals?
We’ll find out soon enough. Happy 100th anniversary
Hoosier Hysteria! Thank you for the memories … past and
present.
Class A Championship
Barr-Reeve (24-3) vs. Bowman Academy (23-1)
second championship overall and first since 1999. Warsaw
Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude
Arthur L. Trester
IHSAA Commissioner
1929-1944
At the state finals, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee present the Trester Award to the outstanding
senior participant in each classification of the boys basketball state finals. The recipients of this award, who were
nominated by their principals and coaches, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic
ability in basketball. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presents a $1,000 scholarship
to each school in the name of the recipient.
From 1917 to 1943 the award was known as “The Gimbel Medal for Mental Attitude” in honor of Mr. Jake
Gimbel of Vincennes, who awarded the medal each of those years until his passing prior to the 1943 tournament.
In 1944, it was known as the “IHSAA Medal for Mental Attitude” and in 1945 the IHSAA board officially named the
award “The Arthur L. Trester Medal for Mental Attitude” in honor of the man who served as first commissioner of
the Association from 1929 to 1944. Recipients were given a medal each year from 1945 through 1964, hence
“The Arthur L. Trester Medal for Mental Attitude.” Since 1965, the award was made in the form of a plaque.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to each school
in the name of the recipient. Since 1989, over $689,000 in college scholarships have been presented by Indiana
Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.
BISHOP LUERS CAPTURES SECOND STRAIGHT STATE TITLE
Fort Wayne Bishop Luers claimed
its second consecutive 2A IHSAA
state title at Conseco Fieldhouse
with a convincing 67-49 victory over
Brownstown Central. The win capped
a 23-4 season for Bishop Luers and
fifth year head coach James Blackmon.
Second-ranked Luers (23-4)
led by only three points at halftime,
but a 15-4 run to end the third quarter
helped seal the Knights’ title. Top
scorer Deshaun Thomas contributed
nine points in the streak and led all
scorers with 34 points. He led the
state in scoring this season with a
30.3 average and now sits in 11th
place on the state’s all-time scoring
list with 2,254 points.
Ranked second in the state in
rebounding, Thomas pulled in 15 to
finish the game with a double-double.
Teammate Lawrence Barnett had 12
points and five rebounds, Ken Mullen
added 10 points and four rebounds,
and Evan Blackmon chipped in nine
points and six rebounds. Mullen also
record with four blocked shots.
Brownstown Central’s Blaze Ayers
led his team with 18 points, 12 from
the free throw line, and five rebounds,
and Ryan Shoemaker added 10
points. The unranked Braves, coached
by 11th year leader Dave Benter, finished
their season 20-7. Brownstown
Central, the 2004 2A state runner-up,
was playing in its third-ever state
finals (1931).
Following the game, members
of the IHSAA Executive Committee
named Blaze Ayers of Brownstown
Central High School as the winner of
The top-ranked Eagles (25-2) led 6-5 after the first
never seriously threatened in the second half and went on to
post its 18th straight win to complete a 25-2 season.
Outstanding Official
Jay Smith Named State’s Top Official
Jay Smith is the recipient of the 2010 Interscholastic
Athletic Official Association Award for excellence in the
sport of boy’s basketball. Jay will be honored in a special
ceremony at today’s state final
tournament.
Each year, the Indiana High
School Athletic Association, in
cooperation with the National
Federation of Interscholastic
Officials Association, recognizes
and honors an outstanding official
in each of 11 sports during
the school year.
During his career, Jay
has 31 sectionals, 20 regionals,
11 semi-states and three state finals to his credit.
Jay was nominated for this award by the Northern Indiana
Officials Association, one of 26 associations in Indiana
made up of men and women who give up much of their
personal time to assist in providing wholesome, worthwhile,
and healthy activities for the student athletes in our state.
This honor comes as a result of Smith’s selection by a
committee representing those 26 associations. Statewide,
there are more than 8,000 officials licensed by the IHSAA in
11 sports.
A 36 year member of the Northern Indiana Official’s
Association, Smith has served as basketball chairman and
president. He has been rules interpreter for four years and
clinician for six years.
Smith graduated from Goshen College and later
attended Indiana University, where he earned his Master’s
Degree in Education. Jay is a science teacher at Wawasee
Community Schools. He and his wife Patricia have been
married for 24 years and have four children, Michael, Mindy,
Jared and Cammy.
