administrative and financial independence. Public hospitals are managed by a hospital<br />

• Public health expenditure as well as medical education funding<br />

- About 30 social insurance funds provide coverage to nearly the entire Greek<br />

population. More than half of these funds operate various insurance schemes and<br />

provide not only health insurance coverage but also pension, welfare and other<br />

benefits. Membership of the funds is compulsory for all the employed population and<br />

their dependants and is based on occupation, not on income.<br />
