IMPORTANT EXERCISES<br />

1) Try to visit <strong>the</strong> office of any governmental or non-governmental organization engaged in <strong>the</strong> area<br />

of disaster management <strong>and</strong> enlist <strong>the</strong>ir specific functions.<br />

2) Go through <strong>the</strong> various media reports <strong>and</strong> note down <strong>the</strong> role of any international agency<br />

involved in disaster resistant building construction in your state.<br />

3) Prepare a list of all national NGOs working for disaster management in your city or state.<br />

4) Make a list of <strong>the</strong> factors involved in disaster recovery process.<br />

5) Prepare a list of various counselling tips that could be given to <strong>the</strong> disaster victims.<br />

6) Try to conjure up an image of a person caught up in a disaster situation, <strong>and</strong> make a list of<br />

<strong>the</strong> ways to counter panic <strong>and</strong> stress in such a situation.<br />

7) Attempt to obtain a copy of your town or district development plan, <strong>and</strong> identify those<br />

developmental programmes or schemes that could include long-term disaster management<br />

components.<br />

8) Explain briefly how vulnerability <strong>and</strong> development are linked.<br />

9) Enquire whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re is an Emergency Operations Centre (Control Room/ EOC) in <strong>the</strong> vicinity<br />

of your area? If yes, what are its contact telephone numbers? Who is <strong>the</strong> officer responsible<br />

at <strong>the</strong> EOC?<br />

10) Find out if any disaster preparedness plan has been prepared for your area? If yes, make<br />

efforts to study it. In your opinion what improvements could be made in that disaster preparedness<br />

plan?<br />

11) Study <strong>the</strong> L<strong>and</strong>-Use Zoning Act, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r rules <strong>and</strong> regulations in your local area from <strong>the</strong><br />

point of view of disaster preparedness.<br />

12) Go through <strong>the</strong> different building codes being followed in your area <strong>and</strong> ascertain if a No<br />

Objection Certificate (NOC) is obtained by <strong>the</strong> builders from <strong>the</strong> concerned authorities before<br />

<strong>the</strong> construction of new buildings.<br />
