activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> near future. The activation <strong>of</strong> community participation <strong>in</strong> sanitation thorough<br />

<strong>the</strong> Health Extension Packages Program is one anticipated product to help susta<strong>in</strong> and<br />

improve sanitation services.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> partners <strong>in</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g nutritional problems <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ethiopia</strong> are UNICEF, <strong>the</strong><br />

World Food Programme, and NGOs like Goal and Save <strong>the</strong> Children Fund (UK & USA).<br />

These are engaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> food aid dur<strong>in</strong>g emergency and rehabilitation phases; <strong>in</strong><br />

human resource capacity build<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>in</strong> developmental activities related to food production<br />

and utilization; as well as <strong>in</strong> advocacy and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> relevant strategies and<br />

guidel<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

Overall, high prevalence <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>appropriate child feed<strong>in</strong>g practices, along with<br />

<strong>in</strong>sufficient knowledge on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> health care providers regard<strong>in</strong>g optimal feed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

practices have been documented. The nutritional status <strong>of</strong> women is also poor, contribut<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

high levels <strong>of</strong> low birth weight and consequent child <strong>malnutrition</strong>, hence establish<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>tergenerational<br />

cycle <strong>of</strong> <strong>malnutrition</strong>. The lack <strong>of</strong> appropriate policies and strategies to create an<br />

enabl<strong>in</strong>g environment for promotion <strong>of</strong> appropriate nutritional and feed<strong>in</strong>g practices has long<br />

been a serious limitation. Thus, it is imperative that <strong>the</strong> necessary actions be taken to improve<br />

nutrition <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ethiopia</strong>.<br />

Significant improvement <strong>in</strong> diseases reduction and, hence, improvement <strong>in</strong> nutritional<br />

status, can only be ga<strong>in</strong>ed when safe dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water, provision <strong>of</strong> latr<strong>in</strong>es, and hygienic<br />

behavior are <strong>in</strong>tegrated and supplied to <strong>the</strong> community. Moreover, such health service, water,<br />

and sanitation improvements must be susta<strong>in</strong>ed as a service, <strong>in</strong>s<strong>of</strong>ar as <strong>the</strong>y are important to<br />

<strong>the</strong> beneficiaries.<br />

In addition, a proper strategy, such as <strong>the</strong> National Nutrition Strategy, is required for<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> required <strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>tegrated framework. Such a framework should<br />

def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> responsibilities <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> sectors and parties <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g nutritional<br />

issues. It should also serve as a basis for <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> proper capacity and human<br />

resources <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> nutrition and food security, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> health, water, and<br />

sanitation sectors.<br />
